Plot Summary

The prologue opens 13 years before the main story. An unnamed couple in Austin, Texas, has fostered nine-month-old Marcy McGee for eight months and expects to adopt her. After years of infertility and two miscarriages, they are devastated when a judge grants full parental rights to Candace McGee, Marcy's 21-year-old biological mother, who has recently gotten sober. Past midnight, Candace appears at their door, bloody and barefoot. She gasps that someone is coming for Marcy and begs them to take the baby and leave. Before he can learn anything more, Candace dies in his arms.

Thirteen years later, FBI Special Agent Mark Burns, based in Washington, DC, struggles through a painful divorce and a strained relationship with his 15-year-old daughter, Izzy. His lead agent, Davis, reports that a dormant offshore bank account monitored for over 13 years has been accessed. The account was opened the same day a man named Greg Olsen disappeared, and over $220,000 has been transferred to a Cole Shipley at a bank in Fraser, Colorado. Burns orders discreet surveillance.

Cole celebrates his daughter Jade's 14th birthday with his wife, Lisa, at Grand Lake, Colorado. He tells Jade they can finally schedule surgery for her severe scoliosis, a spinal curvature that has forced her to quit cheerleading. The money comes from the offshore account he accessed that morning. Lisa worries the transaction was risky, but Cole insists that after 13 years they should be safe. He notices a man with a long-lens camera seemingly photographing him but dismisses it. That evening, Burns examines the surveillance photos and recognizes Lisa as Amy Olsen. The teenage girl is the same age Marcy McGee would be. Burns flies to Colorado to make the arrest himself.

In Washington, Carl Fisk, a powerful political fixer, receives an urgent visit from Ross Lester, a longtime FBI insider whom Fisk pays for information. Lester reveals the FBI has found the Olsens. Fisk glances at TV screens showing Senate confirmation hearings for a US Supreme Court nominee who is his client and urgently warns a contact of a "serious problem" (25). Meanwhile, Brock Gunner, an enforcer for a wealthy West Texas ranching family, receives an encrypted file identifying Cole, Lisa, and Jade as targets. He boards the family's private jet with a rifle. The narrative reveals Brock is the reason the Shipleys have been running for 13 years.

That evening, Cole spots the same surveillance agent following him into a grocery store. He slips out through a stockroom, discovers an FBI jacket in the agent's car, and races home. He gives Lisa a burner phone and tells her to flee with Jade while he draws the FBI away. Lisa smashes Jade's phone and escapes in her Subaru just as police arrive.

Cole lures the agent into downtown Winter Park. In an alley, a uniformed officer tackles Cole, but Brock appears, shoots the officer dead, and turns his gun on Cole. Cole kicks the weapon away and escapes with a graze wound. He recognizes Brock by a small black tattoo on his hand, the same mark visible on home security footage from 13 years earlier. Cole reunites with Lisa and Jade atop a nearby mountain.

Police Chief Lee Jackson, whose nephew was the murdered officer, confronts Burns at the empty Shipley house. Burns orders all valley exits blocked and learns from a neighbor that Jade has a boyfriend named Tyler Healey in Tabernash. Burns orders Tyler's phone monitored, expecting Jade to call.

The family switches to a white van Cole has kept at a storage facility for this emergency. Lisa shaves Cole's head and trims his beard. He bluffs through a police checkpoint by posing as a plumber and bypasses a road closure by driving across a private ranch.

Hours south, at a gas station in Alamosa, Cole accesses a secure website where he stored the home security video from the night Candace died, confirming that his attacker is the same intruder from 13 years ago. Jade sneaks her mother's burner phone and calls Tyler, revealing they are headed to Sayulita, a beach town on Mexico's Pacific coast. Agent Myers, monitoring Tyler's phone from the FBI's command post, intercepts the call. Cole discards both burners and barely escapes as police converge. Meanwhile, Brock flies to El Paso and recruits border patrol agents with cash to intercept the family at the border.

Cole arrives in El Paso the next morning and parks near a shopping mall. Jade goes into a nearby restaurant and sees a national news broadcast naming her parents as Greg and Amy Olsen, wanted for murder and kidnapping. Stunned, she runs into the mall and finds online articles confirming she is Marcy McGee. Lisa locates her, and in a Starbucks, tells Jade the full truth: Candace arrived dying, begged them to save Jade, and they chose to run rather than risk losing her. Jade is angry about the years of lies but begins to understand her parents' sacrifice.

Brock fires at Cole from the parking lot as Cole reenters the mall, narrowly missing. Cole intercepts Lisa and Jade, shouts that a man has a gun, and triggers mass panic. He draws Brock into a Sears warehouse. When Burns enters searching for Cole, Brock prepares to shoot the agent from behind. Cole dives from shelving above, knocking all three to the ground and forcing Brock out through a garage door. He duct-tapes Burns, dons the agent's FBI jacket, and escapes.

Ten blocks away, Cole tells Lisa they can no longer flee to Mexico. He proposes returning to Austin to investigate Candace's murder and prove their innocence. Using a fake ID, he takes a Ford Explorer from a dealership on a test drive and never returns.

In Austin, Jade approaches Hailey McGee, Candace's younger sister, at the restaurant where Hailey waitresses. Hailey recognizes Brock from a night at a bar years earlier, where he accompanied a sharply dressed older businessman who seemed important. She reveals that Candace had a plan to escape poverty with the help of a high school friend, tattoo artist Jack Harlen.

Cole matches Brock's tattoo to Longshore Ranch, owned by the Nelson family, whose youngest son, Peter Nelson, is the current US Supreme Court nominee. The timing of Hailey's memory places Nelson with Candace approximately nine months before Jade's birth, suggesting Nelson may be Jade's biological father. Cole theorizes Candace tried to blackmail Nelson and was killed for it.

At Jack Harlen's shop on Sixth Street, Jack confirms he helped Candace send an untraceable blackmail email the morning of her death and gives Cole a thumb drive with the message. Outside, Brock captures Cole at gunpoint, but Lisa strikes Brock from behind with a metal pipe. The family scatters, and Cole draws Brock into a parking garage, where Burns appears and shoots Brock dead. Burns confirms that Lisa and Jade are safe and in FBI custody.

At a hotel suite, Cole hands Burns the thumb drive. The email contains a photo of Peter Nelson with a young woman, a picture of baby Jade, and a demand for $250,000. Burns reveals that Brock's phone shows constant contact with a burner traced directly to Nelson. An FBI team is en route to arrest him. Burns tells Cole and Lisa they are free and that Jade can remain with them.

The next day, national news shows Nelson being led from a DC hotel in handcuffs. Burns sees the family off at a private hangar and tells them he has arranged for a top spine surgeon to treat Jade. As the plane lifts off, Cole and Lisa hold hands, wondering whether they will remain the Shipleys or reclaim their identities as the Olsens, knowing that after 13 years of running, all that matters is they are still together.
