Tim Grover uses the term “Cleaner” to describe people who are exceptionally driven to achieve and maintain excellence, at any cost. Throughout his work, he praises Cleaners’ work ethic, decisiveness, controlled emotions, and dignified demeanor. He explains that Cleaners come from all walks of life and can be identified by their drive to excel: “[W]hether they’re competing in sports or managing a family or running a business or driving a bus; they decide how to get the job done, and then they do whatever is necessary to make it happen. These are the most driven individuals you’ll ever know” (29).
The author characterizes the “Cooler” type as people who tend to be passive and wait for others to guide them rather than taking initiative. While coolers can work hard, they only work if they are motivated, and when things go wrong, they may make excuses and blame others. To Grover, Coolers are people who have poor control over their emotions and struggle to cope with external pressure. He explains, “Coolers think they want the spotlight, but when they get it, they usually handle it badly” (36). Coolers contrast with Cleaners, who thrive under pressure and create their own opportunities.
According to Grover, a Closer is someone who is more capable and hard-working than a Cooler, but not as forceful, committed, or intense as a Cleaner. Closers are often successful, but Grover urges them not to be satisfied with short-term success: “The Closer does what he’s supposed to do, gets the credit, and goes home a happy hero. Forget that. […] Being great means you excel, which is hard to accomplish and something to be proud of. But it doesn’t make you the best” (27). By pursuing excellence, Closers can become Cleaners.
