The novel is set in the world of the House of Night series, where vampyres live alongside humans and young people called fledglings attend Houses of Night, boarding schools where they undergo the Change into full vampyres, a process that can be fatal. Zoey Redbird, a fledgling with an affinity for all five elements (air, fire, water, earth, and spirit), serves as a young High Priestess at the Tulsa House of Night. Her main antagonist, Neferet, is a former High Priestess who has embraced Darkness, a malevolent supernatural force, and become an immortal Tsi Sgili, a being who feeds on death.

The story opens during an open house at the school, where Zoey and her friends host local humans to build community goodwill. The evening turns dangerous when masses of black spiders materialize in the kitten adoption cages. Zoey recognizes this as a manifestation of Neferet and assembles her circle of friends, calling on Damien for air, Shaunee for fire, Stevie Rae for earth, and Erin, Shaunee's estranged former best friend, for water. Together they invoke the five elements and expel the dark mass, which takes on Neferet's silhouette before surging through Erin's body and leaving the campus. Moments later, Erin begins coughing blood, her body rejecting the Change. She reconciles briefly with Shaunee before dying in her arms.

The narrative reveals what has become of Neferet. In a previous confrontation, the creature Aurox, whom Neferet created, gored her and hurled her from a penthouse balcony. Her mortal body disintegrated, but her immortal spirit survived in a formless state, drifting through Tulsa's sewers back toward the House of Night. Feeding on Erin's death and the circle's energy, she nearly reforms her body before being expelled. Weakened, she collapses near the school's main gate, where she encounters Charles LaFont, the mayor of Tulsa and the father of Zoey's friend Aphrodite. Feigning victimhood, Neferet lures him close, tears open his throat, and drains his blood. She flees to Woodward Park and takes shelter in a fox den, falling into a deep sleep. Throughout the novel, her unconscious mind relives her past: Born Emily Wheiler, she was sexually assaulted by her father at 16 after her mother's death. She fled, was Marked as a fledgling, and eventually killed him. At the House of Night, she discovered her empathic gift but grew resentful of those who exploited it and began listening to whispers of Darkness. Over decades, she manipulated her way to power and discovered that absorbing a fledgling's life force was the key to achieving immortality.

Back at the school, Frances LaFont, Aphrodite's mother, arrives screaming that her husband has been found dead at the front gate with his throat ripped open. Detective Marx investigates and orders a lockdown. Thanatos, the current High Priestess, agrees, stranding Zoey's group, who normally live off campus. When Aphrodite accuses Neferet of the killing, her mother publicly disowns her. That same night, Aphrodite experiences a violent prophetic vision: She sees Zoey losing control of her temper, hurling two men against a stone wall with lethal force, being led handcuffed into a prison cell repeating "I deserve this," and a cathedral full of slaughtered parishioners. Aphrodite tells no one except Darius, her Warrior (a sworn vampyre protector), and secretly recruits Shaylin, a Prophetess gifted with True Sight (the ability to read people's auras), to monitor Zoey's emotional state.

Tensions escalate on multiple fronts. At breakfast, Aurox unknowingly sings a childhood song that Zoey invented with her deceased human love Heath, whose soul resides within Aurox. The incident rattles Zoey and provokes Stark, her Warrior and boyfriend, into jealousy. The group discovers that the school's basement contains ancient weapons encrusted with jewels and decides to keep the find secret as a financial safety net. Kalona, the winged immortal who serves as Thanatos's oath-bound Warrior, receives a divine edict from his twin brother Erebus, the Consort of the goddess Nyx. The edict commands Kalona to defeat Neferet, whom he helped draw toward Darkness, and hints that forgiveness may come if he makes a great sacrifice.

Thanatos convenes a Skype conference with the Vampyre High Council to request intervention. The Council refuses, declaring that Neferet, having been shunned, is no longer their concern. Thanatos responds by resigning from the High Council and vowing to bring Neferet to justice independently.

Dallas, a hostile red vampyre (a vampyre born from fledglings who died rejecting the Change, with extreme sensitivity to sunlight) with an affinity for electricity, blames Zoey's circle for Erin's death and threatens payback. After Erin's funeral, he sneaks into Stevie Rae's dorm room at dawn, using his electrical power to pin her to the bed. He unties the blackout drapes and exposes her to direct sunlight, which begins severely burning her skin. Rephaim, Stevie Rae's boyfriend and Kalona's son, who takes the form of a raven during daylight and normally lacks human awareness, senses her pain and attacks Dallas, driving him away. Stevie Rae is rushed to the infirmary, where Rephaim feeds her his blood, which carries immortal strength through his father's lineage, allowing her to begin healing.

When Kalona and Stark capture Dallas, Thanatos assembles the school and invokes ancient vampyre law. She condemns Dallas for the attempted murder of a High Priestess and orders Kalona to execute him. Kalona beheads Dallas in front of the student body, and two of Dallas's followers are expelled to die far from any vampyre. Thanatos demands every remaining student swear allegiance to the House of Night. Zoey steps forward first, her Seer Stone, an artifact of Old Magick (raw, ancient, and unpredictable energy), blazing with power.

Zoey's internal struggles intensify. Alone with Aurox in the cafeteria, she tastes his blood when he pricks his finger, and the experience overwhelms her. She later commits fully to Stark and separately tells Aurox they can only be friends. Aurox responds that the one thing he is certain he has from Heath is his love for her.

The crisis peaks when Zoey overhears Shaylin reporting to Aphrodite about monitoring Zoey's emotional state and witnessing the blood-tasting incident. Enraged, Zoey grips her Seer Stone and fires a blast of blue energy at Shaylin, knocking her off her feet. Aphrodite warns Zoey that Old Magick is feeding on her anger, but Zoey refuses to listen and storms off campus.

In Woodward Park, two men approach Zoey demanding money. Her fury surges through the Seer Stone, and she hurls a blast of energy that slams both men against a stone wall, killing them. Horrified, Zoey sees a perfect circle burned into her palm and flees back to the school. Detective Marx arrives to investigate, and Zoey refuses to let anyone cover for her. She confesses, hands the Seer Stone to Aphrodite with instructions that only Aphrodite or the ancient vampyre queen Sgiach should touch it, and renounces the jurisdiction of both the High Council and Thanatos. Marx arrests her as she repeats internally, "I deserve this," fulfilling Aphrodite's vision.

Meanwhile, Neferet awakens in her fox den, restored and resolved to claim worship as a goddess. Floating invisibly through Tulsa on threads of Darkness, she enters the Boston Avenue Church during Sunday services and slaughters the entire congregation. Dressed in a victim's designer clothing and pulsing with stolen power, she drifts toward her penthouse, declaring "I deserve this."
