Ruinous Ends

The second and final installment in The Souls of Blackwood Academy series, the novel picks up after the Decennial, a deadly competition at Blackwood Academy, a school in purgatory where the souls of the dead learn to wield magic. Wren Loughty, the series' central figure, has been kidnapped by the Demien Order, a militant faction whose members surrendered their humanity for shadow magic. Masika Sallow has joined the Resistance, a third faction opposing both Blackwood and the Order. Irene Bamford serves among Blackwood's elite enforcers, the Ascended, while secretly working with a Demien named Mateo to infiltrate the school from within. Emilio Córdova and Olivier Dupont have also joined the Resistance, where Olivier experiences the Forgetting, a condition that progressively erodes his memories.

Augustine Hughes wakes in purgatory after carving out his humanity to gain shadow magic powerful enough to rescue Wren. Flashbacks reveal his traumatic past: his sister Edith poisoned their abusive father, and August's accidental interference triggered a violent confrontation that ended in a house fire, killing them both. August recalls an unidentified figure watching as the fire consumed him, a detail whose significance emerges later. Despite the shadows now tethering him permanently to purgatory, he resolves to find Wren.

At the Demien Order's encampment, Edith Hughes, the Order's High General and August's sister, tortures Wren by forcing her to relive her death, a car accident that killed Wren and her sister Maeve. Edith believes Wren is the prophesied "catalyst" destined to destroy Blackwood. A silver security cuff prevents Wren's escape, and her magic has been stripped. When August arrives cloaked in shadows, he convinces Edith he wants to rejoin the Order and undergo the Reaper's Kiss, a ritual of full surrender to the shadows, at the upcoming Equinox ceremony three days away. Edith assigns him to Onyx Unit, the Order's most brutal quadrant.

August secretly visits Wren and reveals his true plan: to escape before Equinox. He persuades Edith to pause the torture sessions, and Wren investigates the encampment with Quinn Woodrow and Arthur Ellington, members of the less brutal Silver Unit quadrant who harbor doubts about the Order. Arthur builds the encampment's security cuffs, making him central to the escape plan. Meanwhile, the Soulless One, the Order's messianic figure, begins speaking directly into Wren's mind, claiming their connection deepens with each forced reliving of her death.

At Blackwood, Irene learns from Mateo that the Order's prophecy names Wren as the catalyst. She is selected as a potential initiate for the Council, Blackwood's secret society controlling the school's defensive wards. Her tests include interrogations in Blackwood's hidden dungeons and demonstrating loyalty through weapons powered by corporeal magic and keyed to allegiance. She passes all tests and receives a defensive ward coin tied to the school's protective barriers.

At the Resistance's manor, Masika, Emilio, and Olivier steal a map from the office of Catherine, a Resistance leader and Masika's ex-girlfriend. Its inscription suggests the True Headmaster, Blackwood's original head whom Silas overthrew centuries ago, may still exist. Catherine organizes an expedition to find the True Headmaster's hidden soul fragment, hoping to resurrect him as the only force that can stop both Silas and the Order.

The expedition crew, consisting of Masika, Emilio, Olivier, Catherine, Dina, a combat trainer, and Analisa, a healer, treks across purgatory following the map's clues. They face magical tests: a sentient willow tree that traps them until Emilio solves three riddles, a house that forces each person to confess their deepest fear, and a fox guarded by a barrier only Masika can pass through. During the journey, Catherine tells Masika she sees "nothing" when she looks at her, devastating Masika. The crew collects three keys and opens the True Headmaster's tomb, only to find it empty save for a drawing of a young man signed "V."

Back at the encampment, Edith resumes the torture sessions the night before Equinox. The Soulless One pulls Wren into a vision revealing the truth: Silas orchestrated the premature deaths of every Blackwood student, murdering them to force their souls into the school. Wren's sister Maeve was never meant to die but was killed as collateral. There was never a deer on the road the night of Wren's accident; Silas stood there himself. Overwhelmed by rage and grief, Wren surrenders to the Soulless One and becomes the catalyst, shadows erupting from her body as every Demien kneels before her.

The transformed Wren banishes August and punishes Arthur by converting him into an Aberration, a mindless shadow creature, then sends it to hunt August. The Soulless One instructs Wren to retrieve a ring from Silas that contains the Soulless One's full power. The ring is locked in a box only Silas's magic can open, and Wren carries a drop of that magic in her soul from the moment of her death, when Silas hesitated while taking it.

As the expedition crew nears Blackwood, the Ascended ambush them, killing Analisa. Irene captures Masika and imprisons her in Blackwood's dungeons. August, having fled the encampment and destroyed the Aberration to save Emilio, reaches the remaining crew and uses massive shadow magic to transport them to Blackwood. Mateo then takes the defensive ward coin from Irene and dismantles Blackwood's protective barrier. The Demien Order storms the gates.

Inside Blackwood, Wren confronts Silas in his office. August, Olivier, Emilio, Irene, and Masika burst in and appeal to the real Wren buried beneath the shadows. Masika tells Wren that surrendering to vengeance is the true weakness. Wren and Silas simultaneously plunge their hands into each other's souls. Silas disintegrates, but Wren survives because a sliver of August's soul, placed inside her earlier, tethers her to existence. Wren briefly regains control and gives August the ring, urging the others to destroy it and flee while he stays with her.

In the forest, Mateo confronts Irene and Masika, revealing his true identity: He is both the True Headmaster and the Soulless One. After Silas betrayed him, Mateo destroyed the pure fragment of his soul, embraced shadow magic, and spent centuries building the Demien Order as a vehicle for revenge. Irene approaches as if to surrender the ring, then places it on her own finger, unleashing its power and destroying Mateo. Realizing the energy will annihilate all of purgatory unless contained, Irene tells Masika her loyalty was never to Blackwood or the Order but to Masika alone. She absorbs the destructive power and disintegrates, leaving behind a new ring inscribed with Masika's name.

With the Soulless One destroyed, all shadow magic vanishes and the Demien Order collapses. Masika puts on the ring; Blackwood calls to her, choosing her as its new Headmaster. She finds Wren's soul fading beyond repair and opens a doorway to rebirth: Wren and August will be reborn into new lives but lose all memories of each other. Without hesitation, they walk through hand in hand. Masika then offers Olivier and Emilio the choice Silas denied every student: to cross over to the Other Side. Olivier, whose memories are nearly gone, tells Emilio the unknown is less terrifying than existing without him. They cross over together.

Masika surveys the damaged but surviving Blackwood. Catherine finds her and confesses she lied: When she looks at Masika, she sees not nothing but her future. They reconcile. In an epilogue set 18 years later, Masika visits the living world and watches a gray-eyed boy and an auburn-haired girl meet by a fountain, drawn together by inexplicable recognition. Satisfied, Masika returns to the afterlife, leaving the pair to begin their new story.
