The first book in the Talespinners series is set in Imagination, a realm where fictional characters live, train, and hope to be chosen by real-world Authors to appear in stories. Indira Story, a young character-in-waiting, lives in the coastal town of Origin, where aspiring characters await the Author Borealis, a magical skyward display that selects them for training in the city of Fable. Each week, Indira visits her older brother, David, in the neighboring town of Quiver, populated by characters who were never chosen. David works in the mines extracting story nuggets, the raw material from which story ideas are refined. When Indira shows him an eviction notice warning she will be relocated to Quiver permanently if not chosen in the next round, David urges her to focus on training. He tells her she is meant to be a hero, and Indira resolves to find a story big enough for both of them.
The Author Borealis arrives while Indira is on a training run. She sprints home to find her neighbor, Peeve Meadows, claiming Indira's glowing beacon. Indira proves her claim by reciting the exact house number, and Peeve retreats. Four characters are chosen: Indira; Phoenix, a red-haired wizard boy with flames in his eyes; Maxi Maydragon, a tall, confident girl chosen alongside Indira; and Peeve. They travel to Fable via a dragoneye, a magical teleportation tile. Upon arriving, Indira hears words written across the sky: her First Words, the opening line of her future story if she earns one. She meets her mentor, Deus Ex Machina, who explains that Protagonist Preparatory trains characters for Authors' stories. Auditions held that day will determine each character's track: protagonist, side character, or lesser roles. He gives Indira a bronze penny that can summon him once and departs.
Three brainstorms, powerful administrators who travel between the Real World and Imagination, oversee auditions: Brainstorm Underglass, Brainstorm Vesulias, and Brainstorm Ketty, a woman with mismatched eyes who wears a black dragon-scale jacket. Indira's opponent is Peeve, who has studied her for months and wins all three scene illusions by exploiting Indira's predictable instincts. Indira is denied the protagonist track. Ketty, assigned as Indira's advisor, provides side-character classes, supplies including stationery printed with Indira's name, and a navy-blue jacket. At the Adoption Agency, the emissary Dexter DuBrow reads Indira's dragoneye prophecy, foretelling she will be "a child of chance, the eventual owner of three unfortunate grudges, and the very mistress of misadventure" (77). She chooses the Penningtons as her host family: Mrs. Pennington, a warm single mother, and Patch, her young pirate-obsessed son.
Indira explores the city with Maxi. Fable has transformed overnight into a double city with an inverted upper half. At the Talespin coffee shop, a magic mirror shows characters their potential Authors; Indira sees a man with a journal but is shoved back by an unseen force. She catches a dog-ear, one of Fable's mischievous thieving dogs, that stole a watch from a Mark, one of the tall, slender residents who serve as living bookmarks. The grateful Mark promises Indira a future favor. Classes begin, and the divide between tracks is visible through gold and navy-blue jackets. Maxi refuses to associate with Indira across the divide, and Indira counts this as one of her three prophesied grudges. In Dr. Montague's tragedy class, held in the Sepulcher (a vast underground vault housing unfinished stories), Indira must revive sleeping classmates using color-coded antidotes but gives her classmate Gavin Grant the wrong one, and he appears to die. She is horrified until learning that characters in Fable regenerate at the Ninth Hearth, one of nine magical fireplaces in Hearth Hall.
Over the following weeks, Indira trains in Bartitsu, a fighting style focused on disrupting balance, and builds friendships with Gavin, Margaret Faye (a shy companion), and Phoenix, after a misunderstanding about jacket colors. Her weekly letters to David on Ketty's stationery go unanswered. Then setbacks strike: Several homework assignments turn up blank. A prank humiliates her. She finds Dr. Montague unconscious in the Sepulcher, his eyes replaced by buttons and his lips sealed with stitching. Near him, she finds a black dragon scale matching Ketty's jacket and pockets it. Vesulias is wrongly arrested. Ketty then tells Indira her professors gave devastating reviews and threatens demotion.
Indira nearly leaves Fable for Antagonist Academy but remembers David's words and visits Quiver instead, using the favor the Mark owes her. David reveals all her letters arrived blank, confirming the stationery is cursed to erase only her writing. He also quotes her First Words, which came to him unprompted, proving he is connected to her future story. Her determination renewed, Indira reunites with Deus along a quest road. He tells her a storm is coming and helps her discover her hammer is a way hammer: When thrown, it teleports her to its landing spot, with one side that breaks things and another that repairs them.
Deus arranges for Phoenix and Maxi to meet Indira. Maxi reveals her cold behavior was a cover: She has been training as an Editor, part of a covert organization protecting Imagination from global threats. Maxi concluded that only brainstorms, who have legitimate access to the Real World, could cause the dangerous energy fluctuations between dimensions. Indira shares the dragon scale and cursed stationery evidence. All signs point to Ketty. Indira returns to the Penningtons and apologizes. The family earns the season's highest marks during a surprise audition.
The investigation deepens. Indira sneaks into Ketty's office and finds the name of Darby Martin, a Real World Author, circled on the chalkboard. She discovers a secret chalk door leading through a tunnel to the Sepulcher, explaining how Ketty attacked Montague unseen. A cat librarian named Checkshire reveals Ketty threatened him into surrendering a restricted spellbook called
The Raven King's Recipes, containing powerful cross-dimensional magic. Indira and Maxi break into Ketty's apartment and find the book hidden by an invisibility enchantment. Indira also discovers a photograph labeled T. Kettle and realizes Ketty is an unfinished character whose original story was never completed.
Arrested by the Grammar Police (Fable's law enforcement) after a security alarm, Indira tricks the bumbling Detective Malaprop into freeing her and escapes with the book. She reads the spell Ketty has been preparing, whose ingredients include Montague's stolen voice, crushed hopes from sabotaged students, an extracted essence of fire, and someone who arrives unexpectedly to confront the caster. Indira brings the evidence to Underglass, who takes the threat seriously. But when Underglass and Vesulias confront Ketty, a trap imprisons both brainstorms as chalk outlines on the blackboard. Ketty captures Phoenix to extract his fire, and Indira realizes confronting Ketty makes her the spell's final ingredient. She goes anyway, sending Maxi to a secondary location while heading for the Talespin, which has been suspiciously closed and contains the mirror to the Real World.
Inside the storm-battered coffee shop, her classmates lie unconscious around a bubbling cauldron, and Phoenix is drained of his fire. Ketty appears in the mirror and reveals she is T. Kettle, abandoned by the Author Darby Martin years ago and now determined to force herself into Martin's new story. Indira throws her hammer at the mirror, teleporting through to an in-between space. She fights Ketty using Bartitsu, stalling the spell, but Ketty transforms her jacket into armor and drives Indira to the edge of an onyx balcony. Realizing the key is self-sacrifice, Indira charges, wraps her arms around Ketty, and pulls them both over the railing. The spell dies with Ketty's broken concentration.
Both regenerate at the Ninth Hearth. The Editors arrest Ketty. The Wizard Union, a magical organization, frees the trapped brainstorms, and Dr. Montague is restored. Indira is promoted to protagonist and heals Phoenix's stolen fire with her hammer. Deus visits and tells her, "I have a feeling this is just the beginning" (346). Underglass brings David to the school, revealing that Darby Martin has chosen them both for a story titled
Indira Story and the Thunder Brothers. Friends find their own paths: Gavin in a soccer novel, Margaret toward protagonist potential, the Penningtons in a short-story collection, and Maxi as a full Editor. At the reopened Talespin, Indira, Phoenix, and Maxi share white mochas as snow falls over Fable. In an epilogue, a Real World girl named Penny finds the book in a bookstore and reads its first line aloud: "Every cage has a key."
