Barrett presents the case of Romanian orphanages under President Nicolae Ceaușescu, where government policies led to children being warehoused with minimal social interaction, resulting in severe developmental consequences. The brain does not operate like a camera; it constructs experience by combining ambiguous sense data with memories. Barrett describes everyday experience as "a carefully controlled hallucination" (71) and reinterprets the classical conditioning experiments of the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov as evidence of prediction rather than reaction. She addresses free will by arguing that while people cannot always change behavior in the moment, they can change future predictions by learning new ideas and seeking new experiences. This control comes with responsibility: If the brain sculpts its own wiring, each person bears some responsibility for their actions.

In Lesson No. 5, Barrett explores how human brains regulate one another's body budgets throughout life. Close relationships promote longer life and better health, while persistent loneliness can hasten death. Words are a uniquely human tool for this regulation: Kind words can calm, while hateful words flood the bloodstream with stress hormones. Chronic, unrelieved stress gradually damages the brain and body. Barrett captures the lesson's central paradox: The best thing for the nervous system is another human, and the worst thing is also another human. She argues that freedom comes with responsibility for one's impact on others.

In Lesson No. 6, Barrett argues that there is no single human nature but many, because a single brain architecture, tuned and pruned by different environments, produces a wide variety of minds. She opens with the observation that people in Bali are culturally expected to fall asleep when afraid, illustrating how different cultures produce fundamentally different mental experiences. Barrett proposes a position between the blank slate and a fully predetermined human nature: a basic brain plan that can be wired in many ways. While each ability exists in other animals to varying degrees, only in humans do they intertwine sufficiently to create social reality. Barrett warns that humans often mistake social reality for physical reality, using race as an example: Skin tone exists on a continuum, and boundaries between racial categories are placed by people, not stipulated by biology.
