He possesses ultimate authority over all spirits and living beings. He rarely intervenes directly, preferring to guide the world through his deputies.

Melkor is the most powerful of the original spirits created by Eru. He possesses immense strength and knowledge but is consumed by pride, envy, and a desire to dominate Arda. His resentment of the Elves and the other Valar drives him to destroy the natural beauty they create. He establishes dark subterranean fortresses in Middle-earth and breeds monsters to enforce his will.

Manwë is the King of the Valar and Eru's most trusted representative in the physical world. He lives atop the highest mountain in Valinor and governs the skies and winds. He cares deeply for the Elves and seeks to protect them, though he often struggles to comprehend the depths of evil present in his brother Melkor.

Ulmo is the Lord of Waters and lives alone beneath the oceans. He prefers the deep seas over the cities of Valinor and operates independently from the other Valar. He cares deeply for Elves and Men, often sending them dreams, warnings, and guidance to protect them from Melkor's forces.

Fëanor is widely considered the mightiest, most skilled, and most charismatic of all Elves. He channels his incredible abilities into creating the Silmarils, three flawless jewels containing the light of the Two Trees. He is fiercely proud, highly suspicious, and prone to sudden anger, characteristics that Melkor manipulates to turn him against the Valar.

Thingol, initially named Elwë, is the King of the Sindar (Grey Elves) in Middle-earth. After falling in love with a powerful spirit, he abandons his journey to Valinor to build a kingdom in the forests of Doriath. He is a proud and protective ruler who distrusts the newly arrived Men and the rebellious Noldor.

Melian is a powerful Maia spirit who chooses to remain in Middle-earth rather than live in Valinor. She marries the Elven king Thingol and helps him rule the kingdom of Doriath. She casts a massive magical barrier around their lands to keep out Melkor's dark forces and any unwanted intruders.

Lúthien is the Elven daughter of King Thingol and the Maia Melian, considered the most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar. She inherits significant magical abilities from her mother. When she falls in love with a mortal man, she defies her father's wishes and risks her life to help her lover accomplish a perilous quest.

Túrin is a human warrior who is sent away from his home as a child for his own protection. He is fostered by the Elven king Thingol in Doriath. He grows into a fierce fighter but carries a sense of tragedy and restlessness, often making hasty decisions that inadvertently harm those he loves. He eventually leaves his adoptive home to fight as an outlaw.

Varda is a Queen of the Valar and the spouse of Manwë. She is associated with light and creates the stars to illuminate the darkness of Middle-earth before the arrival of the Elves. The Elves revere her above all other Valar.

Aulë is a Lord of the Valar who governs craftsmanship, earth, and physical matter. He enjoys creating new things and is eager to teach his skills to others. In his impatience for the arrival of the Elves and Men, he secretly creates the Dwarves in underground halls.

Yavanna is a Queen of the Valar who loves all growing, natural things. She is responsible for creating the Two Trees of Valinor, which provide light to the Blessed Realm. Fearing that Aulë's Dwarves will cut down her forests, she successfully advocates for the creation of Ents to protect the trees.

Finwë is the first King of the Noldor in the Blessed Realm. He is a wise and respected leader who brings his people to live among the Valar. He loves his eldest son deeply, but his decision to remarry after his first wife's passing creates permanent fractures within his family.

Fingolfin is the second son of Finwë and a prominent leader among the Noldor. He is steadfast, brave, and tries to maintain peace within his divided family. Despite facing betrayal, he leads a massive host of Elves on a perilous journey to Middle-earth to establish a new kingdom.

Finarfin is the brother of Fingolfin and half-brother to Fëanor. He is more cautious and peaceful than his older siblings. When the Noldor rebel against the Valar, he reconsiders his choices and eventually turns back to remain in Valinor.

Beren is a mortal man who loses his family to the dark armies of the north. He wanders alone into the protected forests of Doriath, where he encounters an Elven princess. He is brave and determined, accepting a suicidal quest to steal a jewel from the dark lord in order to win the right to marry.

Finrod is an Elven king, the son of Finarfin, who rules the underground stronghold of Nargothrond. He is open-minded and quickly befriends the newly arrived human populations, learning their language. He honors his past debts and readily steps down from his throne to help a human friend on a dangerous quest.

Sauron is a powerful Maia spirit who serves as Melkor's chief lieutenant. He is cunning and dangerous, commanding dark forces across Middle-earth while his master works in secret. He uses deception, shape-shifting, and dark magic to capture and eliminate his master's enemies.

Ungoliant is a massive, terrifying spider-like creature of mysterious origin. She consumes light to spin webs of absolute darkness and possesses an insatiable, painful hunger. She forms a temporary alliance with Melkor to attack Valinor, demanding precious treasures in return for her help.

Maedhros is a skilled Elven leader who is deeply loyal to his father. Bound by a severe family oath, he tries to temper some of his brothers' worst impulses while maintaining their aggressive military stance against Melkor. He is a fearsome warrior who endures great physical torture.

Fingon is a brave and loyal Elf warrior, the son of Fingolfin. He seeks to heal the bitter divisions between the different factions of his people. He takes immense personal risks, including scaling dangerous mountains, to rescue his friends and fight the dark forces in the north.

Turgon is a cautious Elven king and the son of Fingolfin. Guided by divine visions, he spends many years secretly building the hidden city of Gondolin in an enclosed mountain valley. He isolates his people to protect them from the wars ravaging the world outside, strictly forbidding anyone from leaving.

Aredhel is the sister of Turgon. She grows bored of living in a heavily fortified stronghold and leaves to explore the wild forests. She is independent and strong-willed but finds herself trapped in a dark forest by a solitary Elf.

Eöl is a solitary Dark Elf who avoids the company of his own kind, preferring the friendship of Dwarves. He is a skilled metalworker with a bitter and controlling personality. He uses enchantments to trap travelers who wander into his territory, forcing them to remain with him.

Maeglin is the son of Eöl and Aredhel. He resents his father's controlling nature and eventually escapes with his mother to seek out his Elven relatives. He possesses his father's skill in mining and smithing but harbors dark, secret desires in his new home.

Húrin is a famous human warrior from the northern lands. He is fiercely loyal to the Elven kings and fights bravely against overwhelming odds. When captured by Melkor, he defies the dark lord, resulting in a terrible curse being placed upon him and his family.

Morwen is a human woman and the wife of Húrin. She is proud and strong-willed, enduring the harsh occupation of her lands. Fearing for her son's safety, she makes the difficult decision to send him away to an Elven kingdom, staying behind to protect her home.

Nienor is a human woman and the younger sister of Túrin. She is born after her father is captured and her brother is sent away. She grows up hearing tales of her family and eventually travels with her mother to search for her missing brother.

Beleg is a highly skilled Elven ranger who patrols the borders of Doriath. He is a loyal friend to Túrin and tries to protect the young human from his own reckless choices. He ventures into the wild, bringing a special sword, to track his friend down and aid him.

Tuor is a human who receives a special calling from the Vala Ulmo. Following magical signs, he uncovers the hidden city of Gondolin to deliver a divine warning to its king. He is resourceful, deeply respectful of the Elves, and becomes an integral part of their society.

Idril is the Elven daughter of King Turgon. She is perceptive and cautious, secretly ordering the construction of an escape route from the city as a contingency plan. She falls in love with a human messenger, bridging the gap between their two peoples.

Eärendil is a half-Elven mariner, the son of Tuor and Idril. Escaping disaster as a child, he grows to command a loyal following on the shores of Middle-earth. He inherits a profound longing for the sea and desires to sail west to seek help from the Valar.
