Abandoned by her mother as a child and neglected in the foster care system, Alix Watson is now an adult with several part-time jobs, no college degree, and no support. Already feeling like a failure, Alix becomes desperate when she loses her job, her apartment, and her bank account to identity theft all in the same day.
She wanders into the Boston Public Library (BPL), her favorite sanctuary and one of her part-time jobs. She accidentally stumbles through a hidden doorway into the Astral Library—a magical space that exists outside of time. Protected and managed by the Librarian, the Astral Library is a sanctuary for the lost and desperate, who are invited to live inside the worlds of their favorite books.
Alix instantly accepts, but before she can enter her chosen world, a red warning card informs the Librarian that one of her Patrons is in danger. Alix joins the Librarian as they travel into the world of Sherlock Holmes to protect Sarah, the Patron living there, to hide from her abusive husband. When more red cards appear in quick succession, it becomes clear that something more complicated than a single angry husband is threatening the Astral Library.
The Librarian calls on the help of the Gallerist, who manages a magical art gallery, and the Programmer, who manages a magical video game network. Meanwhile, Alix briefly leaves the Library to visit her only friend, Beau Sato-Jones, a fashion and costume designer. Beau helps Alix dress in an appropriate costume to continue traveling through book worlds, and Alix leaves again without explaining.
Back in the Library, Alix helps the Librarian save more Patrons in the worlds of Jane Austen and Wuthering Heights. Then a swarm of red cards attacks them, forcing the Librarian to transform into a dragon. The Librarian carries Alix to safety as a dragon but collapses from her wounds, causing the Library to seal itself off from further attack. However, Beau managed to enter the Library just before it was sealed.
Alix and Beau then discover that the real enemy is the Library Board, which is trying to wrest control of the Astral Library from the Librarian, through violent means if necessary. Alix and Beau travel through many book worlds to distract the Board, hoping to give the Librarian time to heal. While pausing in The Three Musketeers, Alix and Beau share a romantic moment. When they return to the Astral Library, however, the Board threatens Beau’s business, and he leaves Alix alone.
Feeling abandoned, Alix is vulnerable to trickery from the Board. They send her a letter pretending to be her mother, drawing her out of the Library’s safety and into the hands of the Board President. To Alix’s shock, the president is her boss at the BPL, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth has manipulated the entire situation, including the identity theft that left Alix destitute and potentially unhoused. She even hacked the Astral Library to force it to open for Alix. Despondent, Alix agrees to let the Board into the Library in exchange for fixing her life. When Alix reenters the Library, she changes her mind and decides to defend it instead. Beau also returns and apologizes for leaving. With the help of the Gallerist and the Programmer, they make a plan to use the Board’s own bylaws against them.
The Board arrives at the Library and Alix takes control of the meeting. She presents evidence to prove the value of the Library. The Board is not swayed, however. Elizabeth declares herself the Librarian’s replacement. In response, the magical books of the Library attack the Board, killing Elizabeth. The other members run.
The Librarian wakes a week later and thanks Alix for protecting the Library. She offers Alix the chance to live in a book world as promised, but Alix decides that she does not want to abandon the real world, or Beau, completely. Instead, she becomes the Librarian’s new apprentice, allowing her to live in both worlds.
