The Atlantis World

The third and final installment of the Atlantis Trilogy picks up in the aftermath of the Atlantis Plague, a global pandemic. Dr. Kate Warner, who carries the repressed memories of an Atlantean scientist named Isis, cured the plague by stabilizing a merged Atlantean-Human genome, but the Atlantean memories are now overwriting her own identity, causing a terminal neurological condition.

Aboard the Alpha Lander, a massive Atlantean vessel buried off the coast of Northern Morocco, David Vale, Kate's partner and a former intelligence agent, discovers that Kate has been secretly conducting dangerous memory-simulation experiments. He finds her floating in a glass vat, blood streaming from a silver helmet. A diagnostic scan reveals she has resurrection syndrome, a fatal condition in which the Atlantean resurrection process encoded in her biology is failing, giving her four to seven days to live. Emergency surgery saves Kate, and she tells David the truth: her brain will shut down within days. She asks David to protect two boys from her lab and makes a second, private request: to search for her infant son, taken by Dorian and placed in a resurrection tube.

At an Immari base in Antarctica, Dorian Sloane confronts Ares, the Atlantean soldier whose buried memories Dorian has carried since his birth in 1978. The Immari are Ares' militant human faction. Ares reveals that the Atlanteans were once the most advanced civilization in the universe but were destroyed by an overwhelmingly powerful enemy. The survivors lie in resurrection tubes beneath Antarctica, devices that can preserve and revive them, but they remain comatose from psychological trauma. Ares plans to build an army from Earth's human population to wage war against this enemy.

In Atlanta, Dr. Paul Brenner, an official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is summoned by Secretary of Defense Terrance North, who demands Paul's access codes to Continuity, a global medical implant system, intending to euthanize citizens deemed too weak to fight. Paul secretly uses the system to kill North instead. He then receives a call from his ex-wife, Mary Caldwell, a radio astronomer at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, who has detected an organized signal containing Earth's exact coordinates and an undeciphered four-value code. Paul flies to retrieve her.

Ares launches a global offensive by melting Antarctica's ice, triggering a catastrophic worldwide flood. Paul and Mary arrive at Ceuta in Morocco just as the tsunami strikes. David, along with Milo, a resourceful Tibetan teenager living on the Alpha Lander alongside him and Kate, and Sonja, the Berber tribal chief who controls Ceuta, rescues them and brings everyone into the Alpha Lander.

The damaged ship's only escape is through a portal room connecting to the Atlantis beacon, a station orbiting Earth. To reach the portal, the group must cross Arc 1701-D, a five-mile-long alien ecosystem inside the ship filled with dense jungle and deadly flying reptiles called exadons. Kate warns that Ares has sent Dorian to stop them: If they respond to the signal or disable the beacon, the enemy will locate Earth within days. After fighting through the jungle and fending off Dorian's soldiers, the group escapes through the portal to the beacon.

On the beacon, Kate plays the final transmission of Dr. Arthur Janus, the Atlantean scientist who partnered with Isis and rescued Kate two weeks earlier. The message is a surrender addressed to the Atlanteans' enemy, pleading with them to spare Earth. The incoming signal Mary detected is likely bait designed to provoke a response. Kate discovers that Janus transferred Isis' erased memories to three other beacons across the galaxy and proposes retrieving them. Milo impulsively steps through the portal, forcing the group to follow.

They arrive at a military beacon overlooking the Serpentine battlefield, where the Serpentine Army—a collective that enslaved itself through technology and now seeks to assimilate all life in the universe—destroyed the Atlantean fleets long ago. An enormous debris field of destroyed ships stretches to a distant sun. David, shaken by the scale of the threat, agrees they must take risks.

Dorian, trailing them on the Earth beacon, accesses Ares' stored memories. He relives how Captain Targen Ares accidentally breached the sentinel line, a barrier of autonomous spheres protecting Atlantean space, allowing the Serpentine Army to pour through and annihilate the Atlantean fleets. The sentinels' extinct creators rescued Ares and the survivors in a resurrection ark, a vessel equipped with tubes that preserve and revive the dead, and warned against vengeance. Ares rejected the advice and led his people to a new homeworld. Millennia later, Atlantean society fractured between intellectuals and laborers. Ares exiled the laborers to a colony world. Isis secretly gave the Exiles a genetic therapy to expand their abilities, hoping to reunify the two groups. However, Ares had programmed sentinels to destroy any non-Atlantean advanced civilization, inadvertently triggering a bombardment of the Exile world. The Exiles survived, built a fleet, and attacked the Atlantean homeworld, causing its fall.

Dorian attacks the military beacon. Sonja is killed in the firefight, and David is launched into the debris field in an escape pod. Kate leads the survivors through two more portal destinations—one of which is the sentinel factory, a massive Atlantean facility in space that manufactures sentinel spheres—downloading Isis' memories at each stop. They become stranded on the Beta Lander, the smaller Atlantean science vessel on a dead planet, when the final beacon burns up in the atmosphere.

Kate enters the memory simulator and relives Isis' full story: how Ares coerced Isis into helping engineer the Atlantis Gene, a combination of Isis' evolutionary therapy and the Serpentine virus designed to poison the Serpentine Army if it ever tried to assimilate humanity. Each session drastically worsens Kate's condition. She emerges with the knowledge to help the Exiles and sends a distress signal. An Exile fleet arrives and rescues the group.

Aboard the Exile flagship, the Exile scientists cure Kate's resurrection syndrome, and Kate presents a gene therapy that modifies the Exiles' DNA to make them invisible to the sentinels. The therapy proves effective when sentinels disengage from a test group of Exile ships.

David, recovered from the debris field by a Serpentine ship, is offered assimilation by the ring, the Serpentine collective: eternal life alongside Kate, or death for his entire species. He refuses and endures psychological torture without breaking. His resistance triggers the anti-Serpentine weapon Ares engineered into human DNA, and the forced assimilation causes David's genetic code to destroy the ring from within. Serpentine ships across the galaxy go dead.

Dorian, who followed Kate's portal trail and became stranded at the sentinel factory, confronts Ares aboard the resurrection ark. He kills Ares 100 times, dying and resurrecting alongside him. Ares finally disables his own resurrection, choosing permanent death. Dorian, realizing that hate has defined his entire life, walks into an airlock without a suit and dies in space.

Kate bargains with the Exile leadership: in exchange for the location of the sentinel factory and the ark, the Exiles will search every Serpentine ship for David before destroying them. David is found alive and reunited with Kate. The Exiles plan to cure the comatose Atlanteans and return to the original homeworld, fulfilling Isis' dream of reunification.

In the epilogue, Paul and Mary return to Atlanta and begin a new life together. Kate and David settle at his family's home in rural North Carolina with Milo and two boys from Kate's lab. David fulfills Kate's private request from Morocco: a dive team locates submerged Immari labs in San Francisco, where David finds Kate's infant son, placed in a resurrection tube by Dorian, alive in stasis. Kate and David plan to start a family as Earth begins to recover.
