The Blonde Identity

A woman wakes up on a snowy Paris street with no memory. She has a bruise on her temple, blood trailing behind her, and no idea who she is. A man appears over her, blocking the glow of the Eiffel Tower, and shouts at her to run, calling her "Alex."

The man is Jake Sawyer, an intelligence operative who has spent six days tracking Alex, his partner of nearly five years. Alex, a CIA operative, was embedded undercover in the criminal organization of a Russian mob boss named Kozlov. Her mission was to steal Kozlov's flash drive, containing the names, contacts, and bank accounts of his entire criminal network, and turn it over to the CIA. Instead, she kept the data and vanished. When Kozlov's men arrive on motorcycles, Sawyer fires at them and the woman flees.

Alone, the amnesiac woman takes stock. Her dress pockets hold only a few euros and a black plastic card stamped with a small golden C. At a restaurant window, a television shows surveillance footage of a red-haired woman fighting a dozen men; the face matches her own reflection. Kozlov's men soon corner her, demanding "the drive." She tries to fight but slips on ice. Sawyer arrives and shoots them. He notices she does not fight like Alex, flinches at profanity, and has real blonde hair where Alex wears a wig. He realizes she is not Alex but the twin sister Alex once joked about.

Sawyer reluctantly agrees to help, warning that both Kozlov and multiple intelligence agencies will mistake her for Alex. He leads her through Paris, but his safe house explodes from a booby trap. In the honeymoon suite, she persuades Sawyer to stay aboard: No operative would hide on a luxury cruise. When he hands her a pen, she unconsciously writes "Zoe," revealing her name through muscle memory. While showering, Zoe discovers unexplained scars across her chest, ribs, and back. Sawyer comforts her, saying the scars prove she survived something that tried to kill her.

Over two days, Zoe and Sawyer deepen their cover and grow closer. She charms their tablemates at dinner, and Sawyer kisses her when the table chants for the newlyweds. He has a nightmare, crying out the name Helena, a woman he once recruited as an intelligence asset; shaken, he reveals only that Helena is dead. He teaches Zoe self-defense and buys her a silver ring from the gift shop. That night, a Russian assassin boards the ship and attacks Zoe. She fights back using Sawyer's techniques, but the assassin tackles her through the balcony doors into the freezing river. Sawyer dives in, frees her, and strangles the man. He carries the hypothermic Zoe to a ruined castle on the riverbank and warms her by a fire until she stops shaking.

The next morning, Zoe finds the black card in Sawyer's coat pocket and realizes it is not a hotel key but a membership card for a Swiss bank. She deduces that Sawyer recognized its significance from the start and pocketed it because he believed she would be safer if he went to the bank without her. Furious, she storms off. They reconcile on a train, agreeing to go together. Collins, a CIA operative, ambushes Sawyer aboard. His presence triggers an inexplicable wave of nausea in Zoe. She kicks Collins out the open train door. In a nearby village, Kozlov's men appear, but Zoe hot-wires a car on pure autopilot and rescues Sawyer.

Sawyer drives to a remote Alpine cabin that belonged to his father, a British spy. He reveals his mother was an American scientist whose research his father exploited. His recurring nightmare involves Helena, a German bank employee he recruited as an intelligence asset. She was killed when her cover was blown because Sawyer failed to reach her in time. That night, Zoe and Sawyer become intimate, and he sleeps without nightmares for the first time.

Zoe proposes impersonating Alex at the Swiss bank. Disguised with a wig dyed red and coached in Alex's mannerisms, she passes a DNA check and reaches the vault. She finds the flash drive in the first box. A second box, accessed when her hand unconsciously writes another account number, contains an envelope marked "FOR ZOE." Outside, she sees red laser dots on Sawyer's chest. He shouts at her to run.

Zoe sprints through Zurich as agents converge. Collins, who survived the fall, corners her. A motorcycle appears, piloted by Alex herself, and the sisters speed away. On a mountain overlook, Alex reveals that Sawyer does not work for the CIA: He works for Kozlov. Sawyer appears, having tracked Zoe's earpiece. Before the standoff resolves, Kozlov arrives in person. Sawyer's demeanor transforms. He hands the flash drive to Kozlov and says he got Zoe to trust him. Kozlov orders Alex captured and Zoe killed. Devastated, Zoe jumps off the mountain ledge.

She survives the fall. Fragments of memory surface: She was born with a heart condition and had three open-heart surgeries before age four. In Alex's envelope she finds a note and a second flash drive. The drive Kozlov has is a decoy Alex planted; the real one is in Zoe's hand. She contacts Sawyer through an answering service. At Kozlov's compound, Sawyer insists he handed over the drive only to keep Zoe alive. When Kozlov discovers the fake, Sawyer escapes.

Zoe arranges to meet Sawyer at an outdoor ice rink. He confesses he loves her; she says she loves him too but no longer trusts him. She proposes a hostage exchange: the real drive for Alex. She enlists Anthony, a bridge builder she befriended on the Shimmering Sea. Anthony grants access to his unfinished glass-bottomed bridge spanning twin Alpine peaks. On the mountain, Collins appears behind Zoe, triggering her full memory: He is a rogue CIA agent working for Kozlov who lured her to Paris and injected her with an experimental amnestic drug, causing her amnesia. Zoe strikes him with rebar, warns Sawyer, and jumps from the observation platform onto the glacier below.

A battle erupts across the peaks. Alex cuts herself free and grabs the drive. When Collins attacks Zoe on the glacier, Sawyer abandons the sliding drive to save her. Zoe kicks the ice beneath Collins, sending him over the edge, and Sawyer catches her before she slides off too. From below, Alex shoots the glass bridge overhead, shattering it and sending Kozlov to his death. She deploys a parachute and disappears to retrieve the drive.

Intelligence agencies arrive by helicopter; Zoe had secretly sent them camera feeds. An MI6 officer reveals Zoe's last name is Sterling, the amnestic drug should wear off, and Alex has sent the real flash drive via courier. He thanks Zoe for protecting "our man on the inside." Sawyer appears and reveals he is MI6, not CIA. The officer is his father, the head of MI6. Sawyer was working to bring down Kozlov from within all along.

Sawyer arranges a jet to fly Zoe home. She walks toward it, believing he is ending things, but he chases after her. His father urged him not to repeat his own mistake of letting the woman he loved slip away. Sawyer says he is leaving the spy life. Zoe asks to be Mrs. Michaelson, and he slides the silver ring onto her finger. In an epilogue months later, they live together in the Alpine cabin, having co-authored a novel under the pen name Z. S. Michaelson. Alex appears unannounced and asks for their help, setting up a sequel.
