The Broken Vows

The Broken Vows is the fifth book in The Windsors series, a contemporary romance saga centered on the wealthy Windsor family, in which each installment follows a different sibling's arranged marriage. The novel is divided into two parts, separated by a five-year time jump.

Celeste Harrison, heir to the hotel development firm Harrison Developments, returns home after five years at college in London. She dreads attending the annual charity gala hosted by the rival Windsor family because it means seeing Zane Windsor, who bullied and humiliated her throughout their childhood. Celeste's grandfather, Ed Harrison, chose her as his successor only because her brother, Archer, refused the role and was disowned; Ed constantly compares Celeste unfavorably to Zane. At the gala, Zane pulls Celeste into a dance and flirts openly, referencing a sexual encounter they shared on prom night. Through his narration, Zane reveals he has been secretly in love with Celeste since they were teenagers and that she was his first and only sexual partner.

As Celeste begins working at Harrison Developments, Zane outbids her on a small Victorian inn she spent weeks pursuing. When Celeste's best friend, Lily, an interior designer, cannot find work, Celeste asks Zane to hire her at Windsor Hotels, and he agrees without hesitation. Zane apologizes for his childhood cruelty, and when he walks away from a hotel acquisition tied to his late parents after Celeste cedes the project to him, the gesture softens her. He invites Celeste to his house for dinner and shows her his late mother's observatory, a glass structure housing botanical gardens he has maintained since his parents' death. He confesses his feelings and asks for one date. Despite her reservations, Celeste agrees to see him in secret because their families' grandparents share a deep, unexplained feud.

Over the following months, Celeste and Zane fall in love, vowing to communicate openly and stop competing destructively. Celeste's mother, Clara, arranges a blind date for Celeste with Clifton Emerson, another hotelier's son, sparking a jealous confrontation with Zane that temporarily separates them before they reconcile and commit to their secret relationship. Celeste's parents and Archer eventually embrace Zane, and his sister Sierra and her best friend, Raven Du Pont, become close with Celeste. However, Zane's grandmother, Anne Windsor, rejects Celeste the moment she learns her surname, banning her from all Windsor properties. When Zane formally asks Anne for permission to marry Celeste, all five Windsor brothers kneel before their grandmother to plead his case. Anne refuses, giving Zane one month to end the relationship or forfeit his inheritance.

Then Lily calls Celeste in crisis. Lily lost her mother to murder at age 11, and Celeste has been her anchor through years of grief. Celeste finds Lily on the ledge of The King's Bridge, a place associated with Lily's previous suicidal ideation. Lily confesses that she has been in a romantic relationship with Zane since she started working for him, that he ended things when he chose Celeste, and that she cannot bear to watch Celeste marry him. Celeste desperately tries to talk Lily down, but Lily tells Celeste she loves her and lets herself fall backward off the bridge. Celeste is too late to save her. Afterward, Celeste retreats to a cabin she and Lily shared and discovers Lily's suicide letter and diary. The entries describe flowers, lunch dates, kisses, and work trips with Zane, convincing Celeste that he cheated on her throughout their relationship.

Part Two opens five years later. After Lily's death, Celeste planted fake evidence of corporate espionage and had Zane arrested, but his grandmother made the charges disappear. Celeste then leaked confidential information that caused massive losses to Windsor Hotels. Zane retaliated by threatening to go after Archer if Celeste did not leave town, and she fled. During her absence, Zane systematically attacked Harrison Developments, bringing it to the brink of bankruptcy. Celeste has now returned and gotten engaged to Clifton as a business arrangement to save her family's company.

When Zane and Celeste encounter each other at Clifton's benefit dinner, they share a furious kiss. Shortly after, Anne Windsor and Ed Harrison negotiate a merger between their companies, stipulating that Zane and Celeste must marry. The contract requires a minimum of three years, strict fidelity clauses, and that they share a bed nightly. Celeste breaks off her engagement to Clifton and reluctantly agrees.

Their forced marriage begins with hostility and barely suppressed desire. At the vow renewal ceremony of Zane's brother Dion in Hawaii, they sleep together despite their animosity. Their own wedding follows, with Raven bringing a dress she designed years ago for Celeste's marriage to Zane. Both say their vows in tears. Zane sets ground rules: The observatory and his office are off-limits, and Celeste should avoid growing close to his family before their inevitable divorce.

Forced to share an office, Celeste and Zane discover their professional instincts remain in sync, and their hostility gradually softens. Zane begins attending Saturday cooking sessions at Celeste's parents' house, while Celeste grows jealous of his nightly dinners with different siblings. She has recurring nightmares about Lily accusing her of forgiving Zane and confides in him that his behavior does not match the man Lily described. Zane reiterates he never cheated. On Celeste's birthday, he surprises her with dinner in the observatory, opening the space to her for the first time. When Celeste tells him she loves him, he rejects her, saying he cannot trust that she will not turn on him again.

The turning point comes when Celeste attends Lily's memorial ceremony. Lily's father, Raymond, introduces her to Dr. Black, Lily's psychiatrist, who reveals that Lily had borderline personality disorder and developed erotomania, a delusional conviction of being in a romantic relationship with someone who does not reciprocate. The supposed dates were team lunches, the flowers were ones Zane kept in his office in memory of his late mother, and the work trips were normal business travel. The relationship Lily described in her diary never existed.

Celeste is devastated by the realization that she destroyed her relationship based on delusions. She confesses everything to Zane, but he says it is too late: He cannot trust that she will not lose faith in him again. Over the following weeks, Celeste tries to earn his forgiveness, bringing him symbolically meaningful plants, cooking him breakfast, and telling him daily that she loves him. Sierra, Raven, and the other Windsor women reconcile with Celeste and pledge to help. When Celeste finds Zane with a female botanist and briefly fears he is cheating, both acknowledge they are not truly happy. Celeste decides to set Zane free and goes to both grandparents, kneeling before Anne and offering to forfeit her inheritance. Zane overhears her plea and refuses the divorce, carrying Celeste to his private island.

There, they spend weeks in couples counseling and honest conversation. Zane apologizes for pushing Celeste away instead of supporting her through her trauma. Celeste brings him to her old house, which she kept unchanged, showing him dried flowers from every bouquet he gave her and their old wedding vision boards, proving she never stopped loving him. They make new vows on the beach, promising patience and faithfulness.

In the rose garden of the observatory, surrounded by his entire family, Zane proposes with a rose-shaped ring he designed years before their original breakup, asking Celeste to marry him by choice rather than obligation. She says yes. In an epilogue set ten years later, they renew their vows annually on their private island, have a daughter named Calista, and live surrounded by a fully integrated family. The novel closes with the announcement that the youngest Windsor brother, Lexington, will enter an arranged marriage to Raya Lewis, an engineering student from a prominent tech dynasty, setting up the next book in the series.
