The fourth and final installment in the
Bridge Kingdom fantasy series follows two protagonists across rival nations locked in a generations-long conflict known as the Endless War. Zarrah Anaphora, niece of Empress Petra Anaphora of Valcotta, has been condemned without trial to Devil's Island, an inescapable prison for the empire's worst criminals. Her crime: a forbidden love affair with Keris Veliant, newly crowned king of Maridrina, Valcotta's enemy nation. On the ship to the prison, Petra frames Keris as a manipulative seducer who has already moved on to Lestara, a Cardiffian princess and former wife of Keris's late father, Silas Veliant. Petra insists the imprisonment is a lesson and that Zarrah can reclaim her position as heir. But Zarrah's cousin Bermin, Petra's son, delivers her with contempt, crushing her fingers and sending her into the spiraling channel that feeds the prison's interior.
Zarrah survives and beaches on the island's inner shore, where two rival prisoner factions control different territories. A group led by a man named Kian holds the beach and its supply drops, while a second group led by a woman named Daria takes Zarrah in. Daria identifies herself as a rebel captain and explains that Petra has turned the island into a dumping ground for political dissidents. Zarrah endures starvation and bonds with the rebels, who believe a commander on the mainland will liberate them. Kian launches raids to capture Zarrah, claiming she has special value. When Zarrah discovers the rebels have been eating the flesh of Kian's fallen fighters to survive, she flees to Kian's camp.
Meanwhile, Keris fends off threats at home: a kidnapping attempt on his eight-year-old sister Sara by his half brother Royce, and Lestara's bid to become queen. He allies with his warrior half sister Sarhina, who agrees to serve as regent while Keris sails south to seek help from King Aren Kertell and Queen Lara, Keris's own half sister, in Ithicana's hidden city of Eranahl. Lara confronts him at knifepoint, furious that he redirected a battle to Eranahl to protect Zarrah. Aren agrees to help, reasoning that Petra's unchecked power threatens Ithicana. They disguise themselves aboard a Cardiffian ghost ship found adrift with all its passengers dead and sail for Devil's Island. During the voyage, Keris discovers Lara is pregnant.
Keris and Aren infiltrate the island by clinging to driftwood in the freezing channel. Daria's tribe takes them in, and Keris learns Zarrah has fled to Kian's camp. He devises a plan to trade himself for Zarrah, since he is the prize Kian needs to deliver. During the exchange, Zarrah, bound and gagged, presses against Keris and whispers that he came for her. But the plan unravels when Bermin appears on the cliffs with soldiers and orders his archers to massacre Kian's tribe, revealing this as his personal scheme to kill Keris and claim the succession.
Zarrah rallies Daria's tribe and Aren to attack from behind, crossing the guarded bridge alone and announcing her identity, relying on Petra's order that she not be harmed. She wounds Bermin but spares his life at Keris's urging. Bermin shoots Keris through the shoulder; Lara kills Bermin with a return shot. A rebel force arrives alongside Ithicanian fighters, and the combined forces escape by longboat. Aboard the Ithicanian ship, Lara cauterizes Keris's wound. Near death, Keris reveals what he learned from Serin, Maridrina's former spymaster: Petra leaked the location of Zarrah's mother Aryana, Petra's own sister, to Silas, who murdered her. Emperor Ephraim had named Aryana, not Petra, as rightful heir, making Zarrah the true empress.
The rebels' ship carries Zarrah south toward Arakis, a trade city near the rebel stronghold. Keris disembarks before her and waits on a clifftop, where they confront each other. Both acknowledge that selfish motivations corrupted their shared vision of peace. Keris proposes a formal political alliance rather than a romantic reunion, and Zarrah accepts. In Arakis, Welran, Petra's longtime bodyguard, tortures civilians to find the rebels. Zarrah devises a plan in which rebels and civilians each claim to be her or the commander, while Keris rouses the populace to march in thousands. Welran retreats rather than create a massacre.
They are smuggled to the rebel stronghold, where the commander reveals himself as Arjun Retva, Zarrah's father, long believed dead. Arjun explains that he and Aryana falsified his death so he could build a rebel army. He produces a second copy of Ephraim's proclamation naming Aryana as heir. Zarrah rallies the rebels to accept the Maridrinian alliance, and her father reluctantly agrees. Intelligence arrives that Petra is massing forces south of Pyrinat, Valcotta's capital. Zarrah decides to march on Pyrinat, and Keris departs to mobilize his army.
News arrives that Petra bypassed Keris's forces at the contested border city of Nerastis and sacked Vencia, Maridrina's largely undefended capital. Keris arrives in the ruins and uncovers a conspiracy: Lestara forged orders using Royce's signet ring to remove the city guard, then provided a timely warning to play savior, having manipulated Sara and used intelligence from Serin to forge a secret alliance with Petra. Keris publicly exposes Lestara, confesses his love for Zarrah, and asks the people to fight for peace. Aren and Lara arrive with Ithicana's fleet. Keris changes Maridrina's succession law so the eldest child inherits regardless of gender, then sails south.
Zarrah's five thousand rebels face Petra's thirty thousand, and reports suggest Welran has captured Keris at Nerastis. When Petra offers surrender terms, Zarrah specifies the exchange must occur at the ancient handball stadium at Meritt, whose "whispering court" acoustics carry voices from the pavilions throughout the structure. Zarrah goads Petra into confessing her crimes in exchange for burning the proclamation. Neither woman realizes the acoustics have carried every word to the thousands of soldiers filling the stands. Keris reveals himself alive in the opposing pavilion: Welran's forces were overcome by Maridrina's armed women. The imperial soldiers kneel to Zarrah one by one.
Petra drags Zarrah through a hidden trapdoor into an escape tunnel. Keris pursues, fighting through guards and leaping across a burning bridge above an underground river. On a cliffside path above a waterfall, Zarrah breaks free and grapples with Petra, but both tumble over the edge. Keris catches the rope binding Zarrah's wrists while Petra clings to Zarrah's belt. Zarrah offers mercy, but Petra slashes at Keris with a hidden knife. Zarrah headbutts her aunt, sending Petra to her death on the rocks below. Keris's shoulder gives out and both fall, but a companion in a boat below throws a rope, and their allies haul them to safety.
Zarrah sends the surrendered army to Pyrinat and follows peacefully. The city accepts her, and her father crowns her empress. A peace treaty is signed by Zarrah for Valcotta and Aren for Ithicana. When it is Keris's turn, he announces he has abdicated, naming Sarhina as Maridrina's first queen. He tells Zarrah that a ruler must put their kingdom first, and he cannot because nothing comes before her. He drops to one knee and proposes. Zarrah accepts. In an epilogue, Keris oversees the construction of a bridge connecting the Maridrinian and Valcottan halves of Nerastis, living as prince consort to the empress, the Endless War at last brought to its end.
