Plot Summary

Amos Decker, a former football player turned homicide detective who now works on a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) task force, possesses two unusual cognitive abilities resulting from a traumatic brain injury sustained during his playing career: hyperthymesia, or perfect recall, and synesthesia, which causes him to see electric blue when confronted with death. His wife Cassie and daughter Molly were murdered years earlier, and solving killings has since become his sole purpose.

Decker's FBI partner, Alex Jamison, brings him to Baronville, a declining former mill and mining town in northwestern Pennsylvania, to visit her older sister Amber Mitchell, Amber's husband Frank, and their daughter Zoe, who is about to turn six. Founded by John Baron the First, whose mines and mills once sustained the economy, Baronville now suffers from widespread unemployment and rampant opioid addiction. Frank works as assistant manager at the Maxus fulfillment center, the area's largest employer.

On his first evening, Decker notices flickering lights and hears unusual sounds from the house behind the Mitchells' property. Investigating, he discovers two dead men: one hanging from a ceiling hook with pooled blood but no visible wound, and another in the basement wearing a police uniform. The bodies are stiff yet abnormally cold with minimal insect activity. Homicide Detectives Marty Green and Donna Lassiter respond, and Amber reveals that four other people have been murdered in town over the preceding two weeks.

Decker persuades the detectives to let him and Jamison assist. At prior crime scenes, they learn that Michael Swanson, a low-level drug dealer, and Bradley Costa, a bank vice president who relocated from Wall Street, were shot at an abandoned facility, with the symbol of Thanatos, the Greek god of death, branded on Costa's forehead. At a foreclosed house, Joyce Tanner, an unemployed former retail worker, and Toby Babbot, a man living on disability, were shotgunned beneath a Bible verse about suffering. Decker suspects all six murders are connected.

The FBI runs the unidentified men's fingerprints, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) dispatches a team led by Agent Kate Kemper. She confirms the dead men are DEA agents Will Beatty and Doug Smith, whose bodies were frozen after death to obscure the time of death. Kemper reveals they allegedly went rogue and killed their informant, though Decker doubts this account. At Babbot's trailer, Decker finds graph paper with faint impressions before someone locks them inside and ignites the trailer. Decker carries Jamison out but is struck by debris; his heart stops before Jamison revives him.

The head injury alters Decker's abilities. When he shoots Brian Collins, a drug dealer who posed as a DEA agent and tried to kill him at the neighboring house, his synesthesia fails to trigger. He fears his brain is changing.

At a local bar, Decker meets John Baron IV, the last descendant of the founding family, who lives alone in the crumbling family mansion. Decker discovers Baron and Tanner were high school sweethearts, Baron's Greek mythology club links him to the Thanatos symbol, and Tanner's Bible school work connects to the scripture at her crime scene. Baron admits he supported Tanner financially, allowed Swanson to squat on his property, and knew Costa as the bank officer who added a clause to his mortgage allowing foreclosure if Baron were convicted of a crime.

On Zoe's birthday, Frank is killed at the fulfillment center, crushed by a robotic arm that was supposedly not operational. Decker comforts Zoe, drawing on his loss of Molly to assure her she will feel Frank's presence when she visits his grave. At the facility, Decker notices construction drawings matching Babbot's graph paper, with one discrepancy: the office of Ted Ross, the facility manager and Fred Ross's son, is two feet shallower than the plans indicate. Decker secretly enters and finds a hidden closet of fentanyl worth nearly nine million dollars. Kemper confirms the center's package volume provides cover for drug shipments. Evidence also reveals Beatty and Smith were killed for discovering the operation, not for going rogue.

Decker drives to New Jersey to interview Stanley Nottingham, an elderly man whose great-grandfather served as Baron the First's butler. Nottingham reveals he once told his former neighbor Costa about family lore: Baron the First allegedly hid a fortune on his estate. Old letters describe a trip Baron took to Kalgoorlie, Australia, site of the Golden Mile, one of the world's richest gold deposits.

Lassiter finds a gun on Baron's property matching the murder weapon, and Baron is arrested. Decker suspects the gun was planted, noting Lassiter's personal vendetta against the Baron family. He also uncovers a life insurance scam in which local agent Willie Norris targeted people likely to develop addictions and collected payouts when they overdosed. After Decker confronts Norris, someone tampers with the gas line at the Mitchells' house; Decker saves Jamison and Amber while Zoe escapes unharmed.

Decker identifies key conspirators through phone records. On the night Dan Bond, a blind elderly neighbor, was beaten to death, Bond called Alice Martin, a disabled neighbor recruited by Fred Ross to help with drug operations. Martin then called Ross, who called Detective Green. Green is arrested, and Martin confesses, revealing her broken quad cane made the sounds Decker heard when the bodies were moved.

During transport, both Martin and Green are killed by sniper fire. Lassiter, shielded by body armor, vanishes from the hospital. Decker realizes she is Ted Ross's secret fail-safe. Returning home, Decker and Jamison find Amber and Zoe kidnapped, with demands for Fred Ross at a location hours away. Suspecting a diversion, Decker deduces that Ted Ross and Lassiter are at Baron's estate searching for the treasure.

Decker arranges for Kemper's DEA team to reach the estate by helicopter, retrieves Fred Ross from jail, and secures Baron's release. During the drive, Decker realizes the treasure's location: Baron the First brought gold from Australia and concealed bars behind a brick veneer inside one wall of the family mausoleum. The alkaline streaking on that wall was brick leaching through marble, and the mausoleum's sunken foundation resulted from the gold's weight.

At the estate, Ted Ross, Lassiter, and armed men have drilled into the mausoleum's foundation, finding only skeletal remains. Amber and Zoe sit tied nearby. Decker reveals the gold's true location. When Ross's men break open the wall, they uncover roughly 900 gold bars worth over half a billion dollars. Having kept his phone on speaker, Decker signals the DEA, who storm the cemetery. Jamison frees the hostages and subdues Ted Ross while Baron disarms another man.

Lassiter flees to the mansion in the old Suburban, but Decker shoots out the tires and follows her inside. She confesses and takes her own life. As Decker stands over her body, his synesthesia returns: Electric blue floods his vision. Fred Ross, caught crawling toward the estate pond, confesses to murdering Baron's parents decades earlier because they could not reveal the treasure's location. Baron holds a gun to Ross's head but, at Decker's warning, relents and surrenders the old man to authorities.

The gold is valued at over $600 million. Baron plans to invest in Baronville through education, retraining, an opioid addiction facility, and business incubators, and establishes a trust for Amber and Zoe. Ted Ross cooperates for life without parole, leading to drug ring takedowns across four states. Amber and Zoe decide to stay in Baronville. Decker takes Zoe to Frank's grave. She lays flowers and tells Decker she felt the warmth in her chest he described. They sit together, and Decker reflects he must believe good outweighs evil to continue his work.
