Plot Summary

Set in the mid-1970s on the island of La Maddalena, Sardinia, the novel is narrated by Eileen O'Malley Archer, a young American woman who addresses the story to Ramona Carpenter, the daughter of her closest friend. Eileen's account spans roughly two years, tracing her unraveling marriage to a U.S. Navy officer, her growing awareness of the environmental dangers posed by nuclear submarines, and her love affair with an Italian journalist.

Eileen grows up on James Island near Charleston, South Carolina, with her parents and her older brother, Lenny. When Lenny is drafted and killed in Vietnam in 1971, Eileen drops out of the College of Charleston and takes a job at a department store, stuck in grief and living with her parents. In January 1974, Lieutenant Paul Archer, a twenty-six-year-old Navy submariner, walks into the store. Within weeks of dating, Paul reveals he has orders to head up the Radiological Controls (RADCON) division on a submarine tender moored at Santo Stefano in the Maddalena Archipelago. He proposes, and they marry at city hall nine days later.

The couple arrives in La Maddalena, a small Italian island that hosts a U.S. Navy base. The United States has stationed forces there to service nuclear submarines and to counter the growing influence of the Italian Communist Party (PCI). Tom Mueller, Paul's outgoing predecessor, warns them about ongoing anti-nuclear protests on the island.

While Paul works on the tender, Eileen struggles to adjust. She befriends Laura Carpenter, a fellow officer's wife whose husband, Bobby Carpenter, heads the Nuclear Repair division. She also meets Mary Lou Jenkins, the commanding officer's wife and self-appointed ombudsman of the navy wives' community. Mary Lou organizes events through the Community of American Women in Sardinia (CAWS) and keeps close tabs on the wives' conduct. At an orientation seminar, Angela Bornemann, the Italian-born instructor, catches Eileen translating a PCI propaganda flyer.

Eileen begins Italian lessons with Francesca Moriani, a sharp-tongued Sardinian woman openly critical of the Navy's refusal to share environmental data with Italian authorities. Through Francesca, Eileen meets her nephew Teo Manca, a regional journalist covering the Navy. She also befriends Bruno Romano and his assistant Luca, researchers from CNEN (Comitato Nazionale Energia Nucleare, Italy's National Committee for Nuclear Energy), who test the archipelago's waters for contamination. Eileen joins them to dive for fan mussels used as bioaccumulators to detect radioactive materials. Bruno explains the core problem: Without real-time monitoring or a local laboratory, contamination could go undetected for weeks.

Eileen and Paul settle into a rented house in the hills, but their marriage grows strained. She realizes she has never climaxed during sex with Paul, a discovery she confides to Laura, who encourages her to explore her own body. While Paul is away on cruises, Teo begins stopping by Eileen's house, bringing pastries and conversation. They hike to an abandoned villa, sharing stories of loss, and during the sign of peace at the Feast of Santa Maria Magdalena, his lips brush the corner of her mouth. When another officer's wife reveals that Commodore Bill Greer has secretly grounded a submarine, Eileen drives to a remote mountain town to share the tip with Teo. They share their first real kiss. Teo's story breaks during Holy Week, and Greer is replaced as commodore by Mary Lou's husband, Jim Jenkins.

Eileen's growing involvement in the nuclear safety debate puts her at odds with Paul. At an ecology conference, CNEN researcher Luca presents findings showing elevated levels of cobalt-60 and manganese-54 in the water around Santo Stefano Bay. Paul publicly attacks the data, and Eileen stands to ask about half-lives, effectively supporting Luca's position. Paul accuses her of trying to sabotage his career. Meanwhile, three babies are born without skulls at the island's hospital, and Francesca helps the bereaved families organize an advocacy campaign. Francesca asks Eileen to sign a petition calling for the Navy's removal; Eileen refuses, saying it would destroy Paul's career.

After a dinner in the wardroom, the officers' dining area aboard the tender, Paul pins Eileen to the bed and forces himself on her when she tries to reach for her diaphragm. The next day, she secretly obtains birth control pills from the base clinic. During a Christmas visit, she confesses to her mother that she kissed Teo and that her marriage is in trouble. Her mother advises that marriages can recover but that Eileen has to want to fix hers.

Laura suffers a miscarriage during Carnevale and undergoes a procedure in Naples. The wives rally around her. When Laura becomes pregnant again, Eileen makes a deliberate effort to improve her own marriage, teaching Paul what she needs sexually. The improvement is real but fragile. At a press conference aboard the tender, Paul presents RADCON's environmental data, dismissing Teo's pointed questions about nuclear safety. Immediately afterward, Eileen goes to Teo's apartment and they consummate their affair, meeting whenever Paul has duty. Teo proposes marriage; Eileen asks for more time.

Laura discovers Eileen's absence from home on a night when Paul is away and confronts her. In early August, Eileen tells Paul she wants a divorce and admits she is in love with Teo. Paul, who has known about the affair for months through Naval Intelligence surveillance of Teo, takes the news calmly and leaves to sleep on the ship.

Days later, a submarine, the U.S.S. Seneca, arrives at Santo Stefano with its bow crushed after striking an uncharted seamount. During a valve repair inside the reactor containment room, Bobby is exposed to radiation and Petty Officer Kenny Canady takes a direct hit of radioactive coolant to the face. The required shielding was missing; Paul, distracted by his personal turmoil, had signed off on the setup without verifying it was in place.

Eileen rushes Laura, who is thirty-five weeks pregnant and having contractions, to the clinic. On their way home, off-island agitators force them from the car and firebomb Paul's Chevelle with a Molotov cocktail. Teo's friend Afonso, who is among the group, whispers instructions and enables both women to escape. Eileen hot-wires an old Fiat to get them home.

Mary Lou arrives that night to report Bobby's exposure. Eileen and Laura take a boat to the tender, where Bobby describes the accident before he and Canady are medevaced to Naples; Laura accompanies them. Mary Lou reveals that Naval Intelligence, likely operating through Angela Bornemann, has been surveilling Teo for years and that Paul knew about the affair the entire time.

At dawn, Eileen goes to Teo's apartment. He weeps with relief, having seen her burned-out car and feared she was dead. She tells him she is staying in Italy. She packs her belongings from the house, leaving Paul a note, and takes the cat, the pasta maker, and a Mary Magdalene print from the kitchen wall.

Paul visits to say goodbye. He has received a letter of reprimand at a public captain's mast, a formal naval disciplinary hearing, effectively ending his career. He admits he joined the Navy to avoid Vietnam. About the night he forced himself on Eileen, he says only that he did not like the man he was. He separately acknowledges knowing about Teo but choosing not to confront her. They part on civil terms.

The epilogue, addressed to Ramona Carpenter, reveals the subsequent decades. Bobby grows increasingly ill from radiation exposure; when Eileen last sees him during a 1997 trip to Rome, his doctor has given him less than six months. He dies approximately six weeks later. Canady dies shortly after the accident. Paul leaves the Navy, remarries, and dies in 2000 at age fifty-two of leukemia, which Eileen suspects is linked to the Seneca incident. Eileen enrolls at the University of Sassari to study marine radioecology, and she and Teo marry after her divorce is finalized. They have a son, Leonardo, named after Lenny. Eileen builds a career as a marine ecologist, and the couple eventually retires to La Maddalena, in the same apartment building where their love story began.
