The Housekeeper

Claire Petersen, a directionless 24-year-old living in New York City, narrates how a chance sighting sets off a chain of obsession, deception, and violence. Claire shares an apartment with her only friend, April, an HR lawyer, and works two mornings a week as a receptionist. She spends hours daily on Instagram, stalking women from the privileged world she once inhabited. At April's insistence, Claire interviews for a job at a furniture store and is offered the position. Stepping outside, she glimpses a woman in a Manhattan hair salon and is jolted by recognition: It is Hannah Wilson, the person Claire blames for destroying her family. Claire turns down the job and devotes herself to surveilling Hannah.

When Claire was 13, her mother hired Hannah as a summer nanny for Claire's younger brother, John. Hannah lasted only a week before asking to go home. Months later, Hannah and her parents filed a lawsuit accusing Claire's father, Gerald Petersen, of sexual assault. Claire's mother, Amelia, refused to believe the accusations and fought the case publicly. Claire fabricated testimony, claiming Hannah had confided that the accusation was a premeditated extortion scheme. The lie turned public opinion against Hannah. During a press conference, Gerald suffered a fatal heart attack on the courthouse steps. The family fortune collapsed amid revelations of misappropriated funds. Claire intercepts the next applicant for the housekeeper position, Louise Martin, tells her the job is filled, and calls the agency posing as Hannah to cancel remaining candidates. After learning details of Louise's background, Claire arrives at the Carters' house under Louise's name, having cut and dyed her hair. Hannah does not recognize her. Claire fabricates experience and is hired as a live-in housekeeper. Her plan: infiltrate the house; seduce Harvey on camera to make the encounters appear coercive; use the footage to force Hannah to confess she lied about Gerald; and distribute the confession to the media.

Inside the household, Claire barely works. She makes two attempts to seduce Harvey, both of which he politely declines. Meanwhile, Hannah, lonely and friendless, confides in Claire about her insecurities. Claire also learns that Hannah has hidden aspects of her past from Harvey, including that she has been to New York before.

While searching the master bedroom, Claire finds a hidden notebook that appears to be Hannah's diary. Early entries chronicle anxiety after Mia's birth; later entries describe "Louise" lurking in the nursery, making sedative-laced teas, and obsessing over Mia. Claire recognizes these as fabrications and grows convinced Hannah knows her real identity and is framing her. When Diane storms the house screaming that Claire is "not who she says she is," Hannah misinterprets the outburst as a threat to her own secrets, cementing Claire's position. Hannah later tells Claire her version of events, claiming Gerald did assault her. Claire rejects the account.

Claire makes a critical discovery: Every diary entry, spanning nearly a year, is written in the same distinctive ink from a Montblanc pen Hannah received only four months earlier, after Mia's birth, proving the diary was composed recently. She also finds planted evidence in her room: a photograph with Hannah's face scratched out and a nearly empty bottle of Ambien. Someone is constructing a narrative in which the housekeeper is drugging Hannah and threatening the family. Claire confides in April, who advises her to document everything. Her final seduction attempt also fails; Harvey rejects her but consoles her with unexpected kindness, and she considers her plan a total failure.

When the Carters leave for a weekend in the Hamptons, Claire invites Dominic, a photographer she has been seeing, to the brownstone. She packs the diary, photograph, pen, and Ambien, planning to destroy them and confront Hannah.

Harvey returns unexpectedly with Mia, saying Hannah has collapsed and is hospitalized. Claire begins showing him the diary, but Harvey stuns her by calling her by her real name. He has known her identity for weeks, having investigated a failed Social Security number and contacted the agency. He strikes her across the face.

Harvey reveals that he wrote the diary himself, using calligraphy skills to imitate Hannah's handwriting. He has been drugging Hannah with Ambien, gaslighting her by prowling the house at night, and has poisoned her food with foxglove, a toxic plant that causes fatal cardiac arrest. He also attempted to poison Mia but failed. Hannah told him she wanted to leave the marriage, and Harvey refuses to let anyone leave. He discloses that his first wife, Serena, whom everyone believes is living abroad, is dead. He intends for Claire to take the blame and then stage her suicide. The fabricated diary provides the motive: a housekeeper who infiltrated the household to destroy the woman she blames for ruining her life.

Harvey locks Claire in her room, confiscates all phones, and forces her to clean in uniform. Claire secretly records his confessions using a baby video monitor that Harvey mistakes for an audio-only unit. When Eryn Johnson, Harvey's mistress, arrives, Claire seizes a moment with Mia and slips out the front door. On the street, she whispers to a stranger to call the hospital and report that Hannah's poisoning is from foxglove.

Harvey catches Claire and drags her back. Eryn, who has recognized Claire from their school days at Groton, identifies her to the police officers Eryn called, believing Claire was kidnapping Mia. As officers arrest Claire, she spots the video monitor on the floor and screams at them to check its SD card. They play Harvey's recorded confession. Cornered, Harvey grabs Mia and climbs onto the terrace wall. Claire, still in handcuffs, leaps up and catches Mia's ankle as Harvey loses his balance and falls to his death.

Hannah survives thanks to the stranger relaying Claire's message about foxglove. In the hospital, she acknowledges that Claire saved her life and Mia's. Police confirm the diary contains only Claire's and Harvey's fingerprints. Hannah offers to tell police she and Claire planned the subterfuge together, shielding Claire from charges.

A year and a half later, Serena's body is found beneath the concrete floor of a gym Harvey installed in the basement. Claire learns the truth about her father: After Hannah's accusation, other victims came forward with evidence, including video from a hidden camera Gerald placed in office bathrooms. The family fortune was spent buying their silence. Claire enrolls at New York University, works at a childcare center, and volunteers with at-risk youth. She lives with Dominic, and they are expecting a baby. Hannah, Mia, and April live together; Hannah and April have started a children's gardening business called One Petal at a Time. Claire has reconnected with her brother John, entered therapy, and stopped lying. She considers herself, for the first time, one of the lucky ones.
