The Memory Collectors

In the near future, a company called Aeon Expeditions has developed the ability to send a person's consciousness back in time into their own body for exactly 60 minutes. The technology relies on closed time-like curves, spacetime loops that allow a traveler to return to an earlier point in time. A quantum reset occurs upon return, guaranteeing that nothing a traveler does in the past can alter the future. Four strangers, each haunted by loss, are selected for jumps that all land on the same date: August 20, 2025, in the coastal California town of Ventura. When their trips extend far beyond one hour, the four become stranded in the past, and their interconnected histories begin to surface.

Elizabeth Saunders, a grieving mother, takes her first jump 22 years into the past, where she finds her son Sam as a four-year-old. She savors the ordinary joys she once took for granted, knowing he will grow up to die in a highway accident. After Sam's death, Elizabeth turned to alcohol and pills, blaming herself for the angry words she hurled at him the night he left. Unanswered questions tormented her: why Sam was walking a deserted highway near midnight, why a gun and cash went missing from the family safe, and why his final moments were spent near a man with a criminal record. Her ex-husband, Mark Saunders, the founder of Aeon Expeditions, arranges a rare second jump, landing her on August 20, 2025, five days before Sam's death. There she finds Sam in his early twenties, alive and full of plans.

Andy Schapiro, a novelist, jumps to the same date because he has never gotten over Kate Montano, a pianist he fell for during five intense days three years earlier. Kate vanished after Andy told her he was falling for her. His pain fueled a bestselling thriller called He's Gone, inspired by the real case of an unidentified body that washed up at Ventura Pier with a gunshot wound to the neck. On his jump, Andy races to Kate's apartment the night before he originally met her. Over the following days, he recreates their whirlwind courtship but notices unsettling details: a driver's license bearing the name Sarah Canford from Michigan, a thick scar on her forehead she attributes to a softball accident, a security camera inside her apartment, and her habit of scanning doorways and rushing through alleys as if being followed.

Logan Sandoval, who uses a wheelchair in the present, jumps into his body on the morning of his last big hike up Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Overwhelmed by the sensation of walking, he sobs at the sight of his working legs. Logan once sold drugs but used a second chance to get clean and channel his energy into extreme fitness. On the hike he meets Haley, a bartender at a Ventura restaurant called Celestine, and helps her reach the summit. They bond and make plans to see each other again.

Brooke Dalton, a restaurant owner who served 900 days in county jail for involuntary manslaughter, jumps into her end-of-summer party, five days before the hit-and-run that destroyed her life. On August 25, 2025, she was driving the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) when she saw a flash of movement, swerved, and struck two people in the bike lane. One died; another was paralyzed. After prison, her daughter Olivia barely spoke to her and her husband James grew distant. Now, back at her party, she sings Olivia to sleep and discovers more than 60 minutes have passed. She is still in the past.

As the days pass, the jumpers' paths cross. Elizabeth follows Logan home from Celestine, convinced he is the drug dealer who lured Sam to the highway. Logan insists he never knew Sam and was simply pacing in the bike lane, fighting the urge to use drugs, when the car struck him. He reveals that Brooke is also stranded. The three agree to a plan: On August 25, Elizabeth will keep Sam home, Logan will stay off the highway, and Brooke will avoid the PCH.

The plan unravels. On August 25, Kate receives a video alert and flees Andy in a panic. Andy tracks Sam to a 7-Eleven and finds Kate with him. Kate reveals her truth: Her real name is Sarah Canford. She fled Michigan to escape her violently abusive boyfriend, Dane Reynolds, who destroyed her piano with a hammer and shoved her into a wall, leaving the scar Andy noticed. She changed her name and has lived in constant fear. Dane has now found her. Sam, who befriended Kate when she first arrived in Ventura, has provided his family's boat so she can escape to Anacapa Island, along with a gun from his parents' safe for protection.

The three head toward the boat along a dark beach. Dane ambushes them, grabbing Kate by the throat. Andy lunges at him, and Kate breaks free before Andy is extracted from the past mid-struggle. At a nearby bonfire, Logan sees Sam sprint past searching for Kate. Through a gate to the PCH, Logan watches Dane lunge from the trees at a bloodied Kate. Sam attacks Dane, freeing Kate, who bolts across the highway with Dane and then Sam in pursuit. Logan sees headlights rounding the curve and reaches for Sam but is extracted before he can stop him. Brooke, driving the PCH to retrieve her terrified daughter from a nearby sleepover, sees two figures dart across the highway, swerves, and strikes Logan and Sam in the bike lane. This time she stops, calls 911, and begins CPR on Sam before being extracted.

Back in the present, all four discover the future is unchanged. Logan is still paralyzed. Sam is still dead. Mark explains that the four jumpers' paths crossing in the past interfered with the system's ability to extract them, causing the extended stays. The four become celebrities dubbed "the Memory Collectors." At a dinner at Celestine, they piece together the full sequence: Kate and Dane were the figures who crossed the highway, causing Brooke to swerve. Sam died trying to save Kate. Elizabeth forgives Brooke, acknowledging the accident was not entirely within Brooke's control.

Mark reveals to Elizabeth that Aeon secretly cracked date-specific time travel. He chose August 20 deliberately, then selected Logan and Brooke from their applications to learn why Sam was on the highway. He chose Andy for a different reason: Andy's application poem about a lost love expressed exactly how Mark felt about losing Elizabeth. Mark asks Elizabeth to give their relationship another chance. She answers with their shared catchphrase: "Maybe," because "everything good begins with a maybe."

Dane's sister, Karen Fagan, contacts Andy and reveals that her brother's distinctive scar matches the coroner's photos of the unidentified Man at the Pier. Andy realizes Kate survived: She reached Anacapa Island, shot Dane in self-defense when he followed her, and has been hiding ever since. The Memory Collectors make a pact to protect Kate's secret. At a press conference, Andy asks publicly for help finding Kate and delivers a message: "He's gone."

Weeks later, Kate finds Andy on the beach where they once stood together. She confirms she shot Dane and learns his body has been identified. Andy promises to keep her secret. Logan begins coaching swimming and reconnects with Haley, who sets one rule: no talking about their past relationship, because she wants to know who he is now. Brooke apologizes to James and Olivia, promising to rebuild trust, and feels them begin to reach back toward her. Each of the Memory Collectors, unable to change the past, finds that the past has changed them.
