S. T. Abby’s The Mindf*ck Series (2016) is a dark romance and psychological thriller that gained viral popularity on TikTok. Originally self-published, the series became a cornerstone of the dark romance subgenre and a key example of the “female rage” trope, which celebrates female antiheroes who seek violent retribution. The story follows Lana Myers, a survivor of a brutal gang rape who was left for dead 10 years prior. Now living under a new identity, she leads a double life as a methodical serial killer, hunting down and torturing the men who violently assaulted her and destroyed her family. Her mission becomes complicated when she falls in love with Logan Bennett, the brilliant FBI profiler assigned to investigate the very murders she is committing. The novel uses this high-stakes premise to explore themes of Vigilantism as a Response to Injustice and how Extreme Trauma Rewrites Identity.

The author, S. T. Abby, was a pseudonym for the late American writer Christie Michelle Cunningham, who also published prolifically as C. M. Owens and Kristy Cunning. Cunningham, who died in 2021, used the S. T. Abby name for her darkest works, referring to it as her “stabby” pseudonym. The character of Logan Bennett draws on the popular crime fiction archetype of the intuitive FBI profiler, a trope popularized by works like The Silence of the Lambs and the television series Criminal Minds. The novel’s central dramatic irony hinges on this convention, as the expert hunter of killers is unable to see the monster hiding within the woman he loves. Plot Summary

In Part 1 (“The Risk”), Lana Myers lives a carefully constructed double life. A decade after surviving the brutal assault that destroyed her family in Delaney Grove, she has reinvented herself and become the Scarlet Slayer, a vigilante serial killer methodically hunting the men responsible. Her first targets include Ben Harris, Tim Hoover, Chuck Cosby, Nathan Malone, Jeremy Hoyt, and Tyler Blackwell—men who participated in the assault and torture of Victoria and Marcus Evans years earlier. Using meticulous planning and forensic countermeasures to evade capture, Lana stays one step ahead of the FBI until she unexpectedly falls in love with Supervisory Special Agent Logan Bennett, the profiler leading the investigation. As Logan searches for a killer whose methods continually defy his expectations, he never suspects that the compassionate woman he is falling for is the very suspect he has dedicated himself to finding. Their relationship grows increasingly serious even as Lana struggles to balance her revenge mission with the possibility of a future beyond it.

In Part 2 (“Sidetracked”), Lana’s secret life becomes more difficult to maintain as another serial killer, Gerald Plemmons, known as the Boogeyman, begins targeting women and taunting Logan’s team. While helping Logan identify the killer, Lana attracts the suspicion of forensic specialist Hadley Grace, who uncovers inconsistencies in her identity and begins investigating her past. When Plemmons kidnaps Hadley and attacks Lana, Lana is forced to reveal her combat skills to save them both, killing the Boogeyman and staging the scene as self-defense. Rather than exposing her, Hadley chooses to protect Lana, recognizing that her actions stem from a very different moral code than those of the predators she hunts. This unlikely alliance marks the beginning of Hadley’s growing understanding of Lana’s past and her skepticism toward the institutions they both serve. Even while helping investigate Plemmons, Lana continues eliminating members of the original group responsible for the attack, including Kyle Cannon and Eric Vanderbilt, bringing her steadily closer to the people who orchestrated the conspiracy itself.

In Parts 3 (“Scarlet Angel”) and 4 (“All the Lies”), Logan’s investigation gradually converges on Delaney Grove, where he uncovers evidence of a decades-old conspiracy involving Sheriff Cannon, Judge Thomas, FBI agent Miller Johnson, and other local officials. Assisted by her lifelong friend and hacker Jake Denver, Lana shifts her focus from the surviving attackers to the powerful figures who protected them, targeting Sheriff Cannon, Judge Thomas, Deputy Murdock, Chad Briggs, and other officials who spent years concealing the crimes against the Evans family. As witnesses finally come forward, Logan learns that Robert Evans was falsely convicted of murders committed by Christopher Denver before being tortured and killed in custody, while Victoria and Marcus Evans were subjected to horrific abuse that left Marcus dead and Victoria presumed deceased. At the same time, Leonard uncovers Lana’s true identity, and Logan realizes that the woman he loves is Victoria Evans. Believing she manipulated him throughout their relationship, he angrily confronts Lana before leaving her without allowing her to explain, a rejection that leaves her emotionally devastated as she prepares to complete her revenge alone.

In Part 5 (“Paint It All Red”), Jake forces Logan to confront the full truth about Lana’s past, revealing that her choices—including many that spared innocent lives—were shaped by her love for him. As Lana closes in on the final names on her list, she prepares to eliminate the last corrupt officials while Jake orchestrates the downfall of Delaney Grove itself, forcing the town’s buried crimes into public view.
