Chapter 33 Summary: “Tory”
A school-wide notice from Principal Nova warns students of the upcoming Lunar Eclipse, an event that will cause all Fae to act on their most primal urges. Tory reads the message, noting that Caleb has gone to visit his family for the eclipse. She decides that their relationship needs new rules, as she’s tired of his inconsistent behavior. Soon after, Darius sends a mandatory invitation to all members of Ignis House for a Moon Party.
Feeling the pull of the moon, Tory impulsively replies to the group message. Darius messages her privately, daring her to send a picture of her outfit. In a moment of recklessness, Tory sends him a photo of herself in her underwear and a pair of muddy boots. Darcy arrives and is shocked to see the messages but helps Tory pick out a more appropriate white dress. Just as they’re about to leave, Darius appears at Tory’s door. He comments that he preferred her previous outfit and calls her “pretty” before departing, leaving Tory feeling flustered.
Chapter 34 Summary: “Darius”
In the Ignis common room, Darius struggles against the urge to look at the photo Tory sent him. When Marguerite reminds him of their first kiss during a past eclipse, he forcefully rejects her offer to hook up again. When Tory and Darcy pass through the room, Darius watches them but doesn’t approach.
In Orion’s rooms, Darius confirms with him that Xavier and their mother have safely traveled to the mortal realm, successfully thwarting their father’s plans for them during the eclipse. Darius asks Orion what it means when a girl messages you a photo of herself in her underwear, without naming Tory. Orion encourages him to tell her how he feels. To escape a rowdy faculty pool party, Orion joins Darius, and they go to the cliffs overlooking the student beach party. Spotting Tory on the sand below, Darius feels a renewed determination to go down and win her over.
Chapter 35 Summary: “Darcy”
At the beach party, Darcy feels the moon intensifying her desire for Orion. She watches as Geraldine attempts to go skinny dipping and successfully resists the Siren lure of Max. Darcy receives a text from Orion asking her to meet him at Aer Tower. She makes an excuse to Tory and leaves the party.
Orion reports that Diego is lurking nearby and changes their meeting spot to the Wailing Wood. There, he ambushes Darcy playfully, and they share a passionate kiss before he bites her neck. Darcy complains of a strange ache in her shoulder blades, which Orion identifies as the first sign of her magical Order’s wings emerging, telling her that she will likely be a Dragon. They make a plan for him to sneak into her room later that night.
Chapter 36 Summary: “Seth”
On the beach, Seth tries to have sex with Kylie but finds that he’s unable to perform because he’s preoccupied with thoughts of Darcy. Frustrated, he breaks up with Kylie, telling her that they were never exclusive. Convinced that the Lunar Eclipse is drawing him and Darcy together, Seth goes to find her.
He waits for her on the path leading from the beach, drinking rum. Soon, he sees Darcy with Orion, and his mouth is on her neck. A drunken Seth confronts the pair, trying to shove Orion aside, but Orion knocks Seth to the ground. Seth declares to Darcy that he broke up with Kylie for her and insists that the moon wants them to be together, but she firmly rejects him. As he walks away defeated, Seth becomes suspicious, wondering why Darcy has no visible bite mark if Orion, a Vampire, had just been feeding on her.
Chapter 37 Summary: “Tory”
Back at the beach party, Tory feels an overwhelming and restless heat. Pulled by an unknown urge, she wanders away from her friends along the shore to a more secluded area. There, Darius steps out from the shadows to meet her. He confesses that his intense desire for her is a constant torment. An undeniable attraction draws them together, and he pins her against a cliff wall as they prepare to kiss.
Their moment is shattered by the sudden arrival of Lionel, who uses powerful magic to instantly incapacitate both Tory and Darius, revealing that he had planned for Darius to lure Tory away from the group. With both of them captured, Lionel magically drags them away from the beach.
Chapter 38 Summary: “Darcy”
Lionel brings Tory and Darius to a cave where Darcy and Orion are already being held captive by robed figures. Lionel uses stardust to transport the entire group to a remote clifftop dominated by a large crater. Darius and Orion attempt to fight back, but they’re forced to surrender when Stella appears, holding Xavier hostage.
Lionel reveals his plan to enter the Shadow Realm through a dark ritual. He explains that a previous attempt failed because they misread an ancient text; the word for “pure” is interchangeable with “royal” in the old tongue, meaning that royal blood is required. As the Lunar Eclipse begins, Lionel transforms into a massive Dragon. He uses his fire to melt a fallen meteor into a mound of magical stardust. Stella confirms that the Vega twins, as Fae royalty, are the vessels needed for the ritual, which will grant Lionel and his supporters the Fifth Element: shadow magic.
Chapter 39 Summary: “Tory”
To ensure the twins’ cooperation, Lionel punches Tory and threatens to kill one sister if the other disobeys. He then cuts both of their palms, presses their bleeding hands together, and shoves them into the crater filled with stardust. Their combined royal blood activates the dark magic, and shadows begin to invade their bodies. They experience a vision where a girl tempts them to surrender, but they refuse to let go of each other.
Their mutual defiance triggers an agonizing transformation. Instead of being consumed by shadows, they’re engulfed in flames, and their true magical Order emerges: They are Phoenixes, both sprouting wings of fire. After the transformation, they fall from the sky and are caught. The ritual is a success, granting Lionel and his followers the power of shadow magic. Darius and Orion also receive the shadow magic against their will, and Lionel uses this as a lever of control, telling them that they’re bound to secrecy and can never defy him. Lionel then uses a Coercion spell to erase the twins’ memories of the event. However, their new Phoenix abilities make them secretly immune to his spell. Lionel, unaware of their resistance, orders a defeated Darius and Orion to return the twins to the Academy.
Bonus Chapter Summary: “Max”
Max, Caleb, and Seth enter the Ignis common room and are immediately accosted by a group of Griffins who believe the circulating rumors about Max’s fecal fetish. After Caleb is propositioned by a Pegasus girl based on similar rumors, he storms off. The Heirs meet in Darius’s room, where they express frustration that their press advisors can’t stop the embarrassing stories from spreading. Darius is also morose over his treasure, which was re-cast after the fire and has lost its historical value.
The meeting is cut short when Caleb receives a text from Tory and immediately leaves to meet her. Feeling the urge of his Fae power, Max departs to release his Siren Song, which magically lures a person in need of a truth. To his horror, the person drawn to him is the same Griffin girl from the common room. Trapped by his magic and convinced that he has nefarious plans, she panics, loses control of her shifting, and accidentally defecates all over him.
Chapter 33-Bonus Chapter Analysis
In the novel’s final section, the Lunar Eclipse acts as a catalyst for the climax.
