Published in 2019, The Reckoning is a dark-fantasy romance novel by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti. It’s the third installment in their popular Zodiac Academy series, which belongs to the subgenres of dark academia and bully romance, and follows Ruthless Fae (2019). Peckham and Valenti are #1 Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-selling authors known for their interconnected fantasy worlds, with the Zodiac Academy series gaining significant popularity with reader communities on social-media platforms like TikTok. 

The story follows twin Fae princesses Tory and Darcy Vega, two powerful heirs to the Solarian throne who have been raised in the mortal world with no knowledge of their magical heritage, as they navigate Zodiac Academy, a magical school where cruelty is part of the curriculum. Thematically, the third installment in the series examines The Corrupting Effects of Power, which is explored through the Zodiac Academy’s institutionalized abuse and the tyrannical ambitions of its elite figures; Bullying as a Shield for Buried Pain, framing the antagonists’ aggression as a destructive response to their own hidden traumas; and The Sustaining Impact of Family Bonds, positioning the unwavering loyalty between the twin sisters as their most formidable source of strength.

Plot Summary

Following a deadly Nymph attack at Zodiac Academy, the student body is reeling from the loss of 12 peers. Twin sisters and lost Fae princesses Tory Vega and Darcy Vega brace themselves for more conflict as Principal Nova announces the start of Hell Week, a period of intense hazing for freshmen culminating in The Reckoning—a final assessment to secure their place at the school. Hell Week puts them in the crosshairs of the four Celestial Heirs—Dragon Shifter Darius Acrux, Vampire Caleb Altair, Werewolf Seth Capella, and Siren Max Rigel—who are determined to drive the twins out and secure their own claim to the Solarian throne. Secretly, Darcy’s professor, the Vampire Lance Orion, is training Darius in dark magic, preparing to thwart Darius’s father, the ruthless High Lord Lionel Acrux, who plans to perform a dangerous ritual during the upcoming Lunar Eclipse.

As Hell Week begins, older students subject the freshmen to relentless magical pranks. Tory and Darcy navigate the chaos with their friends, the Pegasus shifter Sofia Cygnus and the earth-magic wielder Diego Polaris. The personal conflicts intensify: Tory engages in a dangerous hunting game with Caleb, where he pursues her for a chance to feed from her. Darcy struggles with an unwanted magical bond to Seth, who has claimed her as his Omega and initiates her into his pack by sharing a traumatic childhood story to forge a connection. Darcy gives in to the attraction between herself and Orion, visiting him at his private chalet, where they have sex. 

The Heirs’ animosity grows when they discover that the twins have retaliated against them for their cruelty by carrying out a series of humiliating pranks targeting them, including spreading a rumor that Max enjoys being defecated on by Griffins and planting an inflatable Pegasus sex doll in Caleb’s room. They vow to escalate their retaliation after The Reckoning.

Darcy and Tory discover a hidden cave where Orion and Darius are practicing forbidden shadow magic. Using a special silver dagger—just like the one Tory stole from Darius’s room—and the bones of deceased Fae, they’re learning to wield dark elements outside of their own Fae powers. Tory, who’s holding the stolen dagger, finds herself inadvertently drawn into the magical vision they’re conjuring and is nearly consumed by shadows before the others save her. The confrontation exposes Tory’s role in the destruction of Darius’s room and her framing of his friend Milton Hubert for the theft of the dagger. To ensure mutual silence about their respective secrets, Darius, Orion, Darcy, and Tory agree to a tense truce. 

The freshmen begin their Air Trial, the first of their Elemental trials, which requires them to cross a wide expanse of water using only air magic, which the twins pass despite the taunts and insults shouted by students currying the favor of the Heirs. The Water Trial involves retrieving keys from a waterfall, a block of ice, and the bottom of a lake. During the Fire Trial, the freshmen must traverse a narrow bridge over a lava pit while maintaining a complex fire-cast shape. The Heirs sabotage the trial with magical obstacles, but Tory and Darcy discover that they’re impervious to fire and pass easily. 

For the Earth Trial, they must escape a subterranean labyrinth while being hunted by a monstrous worm-like creature, succeeding by using their earth magic to sense the path and dig their way to the surface. Their final assessment, The Reckoning, is an individual magical vision where they’re forced to relive past traumas and confront the ruthless nature of Fae society. Darcy is asked what a Fae will do to claim their rightful place, and she accepts the brutal truth by answering, “Anything.” Having passed every trial with high scores, the twins officially earn their place at the Academy. Immediately after, the Heirs confront them, declaring that their true battle is only just beginning.

On the night of the Lunar Eclipse, a party is held at Air Cove. The moon’s influence heightens Fae instincts, and Tory feels an undeniable pull toward Darius. He finds her alone on the beach, and they share a moment of intense vulnerability where he confesses his torment over their conflict and asks for forgiveness. However, Tory realizes that the moment is a carefully orchestrated trap when Lionel appears, revealing that Darius lured Tory away from the group. Lionel uses his immense power to capture both twins and a resisting Orion and then uses stardust to transport them all, including a magically coerced Darius, to a desolate clifftop for a dark ritual.

Surrounded by his robed followers, Lionel reveals his true goal: to open a portal to the Shadow Realm and harness the power of the Fifth Element. He explains that since the ritual requires royal blood to act as a vessel, he intends to use the twins. To ensure everyone’s cooperation, Lionel holds his younger son, Xavier, hostage with a knife to his throat. As the Eclipse begins, Lionel cuts Tory’s and Darcy’s palms with a silver dagger and presses their hands together over a mound of magically created stardust. The twins are wracked with agonizing pain as the shadows are channeled through them. At the precipice of being consumed, their true Order awakens: They are not Dragons, as many had suspected, but Phoenixes. They manifest magnificent wings of fire and survive the ordeal.

The ritual is a success, granting Lionel, his followers, Orion, and Darius the power of the shadows. Believing that the twins have served their purpose, Lionel uses a Coercion spell and commands them, “You will forget you were ever here” (699). However, their new Phoenix nature renders them immune to his mental command. Pretending that their memories have been wiped, they allow Orion and Darius to return them to the Academy. The book ends on a cliffhanger, with the twins fully aware of Lionel’s plot, their new powers, and the Heirs’ betrayal, as Tory silently vows to make them pay.
