The Return

Elise, an office manager living alone in Buffalo, New York, receives a phone call from her friend Molly with alarming news: Their best friend Julie has gone missing during a solo hike in Acadia National Park in Maine and never returned. Julie's husband, Tristan, has filed a missing person report. Elise refuses to believe Julie is truly gone, convinced the disappearance is a ploy for attention consistent with Julie's personality. She and Julie share a deep bond forged over four years as college roommates.

The four women in the friend group are distinct. Molly, who lost her left leg below the knee to childhood bone cancer, works as a late-night TV producer in Los Angeles. Mae, a fashion stylist in New York, was adopted from China, grew up in Atlanta, and has albinism. Julie grew up in a small Massachusetts town, pursued acting before shifting to marketing, and returned home to care for her dying mother. She married Tristan, a high school acquaintance, in a small ceremony none of her friends attended, and the couple began renovating a house into a bed-and-breakfast in Maine.

As weeks stretch into months and then years, Elise clings to her belief that Julie is alive while Molly and Mae grieve. At one year, the friends attend a memorial at Julie and Tristan's house and meet Tristan for the first time. His visible grief convinces them he had nothing to do with Julie's disappearance. Approaching two years, Elise develops a habit of talking to Julie aloud, revealing the depth of her isolation.

Exactly two years after she vanished, Tristan finds Julie on the porch swing in the same clothes she wore the day she disappeared. She is hospitalized and appears stable aside from a gap in her memory. Julie calls Elise, confirming her identity through her voice, and says she wants a few weeks before seeing anyone. Yet Elise begins experiencing persistent dread after learning of Julie's return: migraines, neck pain, and episodes of sleep paralysis in which she senses a dark presence. Julie proposes a girls' trip, and Mae organizes a stay at the Red Honey Inn in upstate New York.

Elise's troubled past is woven through the narrative. Raised by her aunt Lucia after her teenage mother died in a drunk-driving accident and her biological father abandoned her, Elise fell in love with her married professor in graduate school and followed him to Buffalo, abandoning her degree. The affair isolated her from everyone, and though she eventually ended it, she remained stuck in Buffalo, lonely and unfulfilled.

Elise arrives at the Red Honey Inn, a sprawling, eccentrically decorated hotel in the Catskills. Strange things happen immediately: her thermostat resets to frigid temperatures, the TV emits disturbing static, and as she locks her door, she glimpses a figure inside her room that vanishes when she checks. When Julie arrives, Elise is horrified. Julie is emaciated, her teeth chipped and discolored, her eyes bloodshot, her hair stringy. Elise hides her shock by pulling Julie into a hug. Julie asks them to pretend nothing happened.

Over the following days, troubling signs multiply. At dinner, Julie orders a rare steak, shocking everyone because she has been a committed vegetarian since childhood. She eats aggressively, barely chewing, her jaw clicking. She brings up Elise's estranged biological father, a topic the group considers off-limits. Alone in her room, Elise experiences escalating disturbances: extra footsteps behind her, a dark humanoid shape crawling beside her bed, scratching inside the walls. She has a vivid nightmare in which a creature with Julie's face but rows of pointed teeth feeds on a body. Julie's appearance fluctuates wildly, her skin freezing to the touch. During a cooking class, a tooth cracks out of Julie's mouth; she calmly mentions she has already lost two since returning. After Julie leaves blood in Elise's bathroom, the three friends agree Elise should call Tristan.

Tristan breaks down on the phone. He says he does not believe the person who came back is truly Julie, not that she is someone else, but that she has fundamentally changed. He describes finding her sleeping on the lawn at night, unresponsive to her name, and discovering her at two a.m. hunched in the refrigerator light, eating raw ground beef with her hands, blood all over her chin. He locks his bedroom door out of fear. Elise withholds the most disturbing details from Molly and Mae.

Mae deteriorates rapidly after eating Julie's crepe and receiving a kiss on the mouth from Julie. Elise suspects Julie carries some kind of contagion. Wailing sounds fill the hotel, walls rattle, and lights flicker. Before confronting Julie, Elise confesses to Molly that she developed feelings for Tristan during Julie's absence. Molly tells her gently that nothing can come of it.

In Julie's putrid-smelling room, Julie looks drastically worse, spitting out another tooth while eating beef jerky. Elise tells Julie she knows about the raw meat, but Julie deflects. Under Julie's bed, Elise notices vintage cat-eye glasses identical to those worn by the receptionist who checked her in. Julie dismisses them. In the hallway afterward, Elise crouches by a vent and smells something rotten, hearing dripping, breathing, and chewing from within the walls.

The next morning, the hotel is emptying. Mae is barely conscious. Searching for supplies, Elise enters the kitchen and finds it drenched in blood with slaughtered pig parts across the floor. She flees. Elise finally tells Molly and Mae everything Tristan revealed, and Molly erupts in fury for being kept in the dark.

As the three friends try to leave through the lobby, Julie appears behind them. Her transformation is now extreme: cratered metallic skin, rows of pointed teeth, bleeding irises, exposed bone where her nose once was. Julie tells them to leave, saying she came back only for Elise. Mae apologizes to Julie for not asking sooner what was wrong. Elise initially keeps her back turned, declaring she will not leave without Julie, but when she finally turns and sees Julie's monstrous appearance, she screams. Molly and Mae are forced to depart to get Mae to a doctor, leaving Elise behind.

Elise follows Julie to the lounge. Going upstairs briefly for her room key, she discovers Patsy, the hotel manager, dead in the hallway, drained of blood. Julie then reveals she lied about not remembering. On the trail in Acadia, a tall, dark creature stalked and attacked her, pinning her down as its mouth clamped onto her. She woke buried in dirt, no longer fully human, and joined the creature and others like it in a nomadic existence of feeding. The memory of Elise eventually weakened her among the others, and they let her leave.

Julie asks Elise to be transformed alongside her, promising freedom from fear and loneliness. Elise recognizes the accuracy of Julie's criticisms but understands Julie is not offering salvation. She refuses. Julie seizes her with inhuman strength, and they struggle beside the pool. Elise fully accepts that Julie died two and a half years ago; what came back is something wearing her remnants. She stomps on Julie's neck and flees. The front doors are sealed, but she finds a button behind the reception desk that unlocks them. Her car tires are slashed, but the engine starts. Julie smashes through the windshield, and Elise crashes into a tree. In the woods, Julie confronts her one last time. Elise tells Julie she loves her but was also jealous and resentful. Julie, sobbing that she is hungry and cannot help what she has become, screams at Elise to leave. Elise runs and wanders for hours until a passing car rescues her.

One year later, Elise, Molly, and Mae gather at Mae's apartment. They bear visible marks of the trauma but no longer avoid difficult conversations. Elise expresses fierce gratitude for life and for her friends. Yet she still senses Julie everywhere, in approaching footsteps, peripheral movement, and elusive shadows. Whatever Julie has become will follow her always.
