Her chic black wardrobe, classic trench coat, and flawless makeup are forms of armor, a literal and figurative mask she applies to project an image of a woman who “has her shit together” (3). This external perfection conceals a psyche fractured by years of untreated trauma. Her potential HIV diagnosis acts as the catalyst that cracks this facade, forcing her to confront the painful secrets she has suppressed since childhood.

Dionne’s primary coping mechanism, developed in response to her stepfather Richard’s prolonged sexual abuse, is a form of dissociation.
