Plot Summary

The 12th and final book in the Ranger's Apprentice series is set in the medieval kingdom of Araluen, where an elite corps of Rangers serves as the crown's scouts, intelligence agents, and protectors.

Will Treaty, once the most celebrated Ranger in Araluen, has become a grim, grief-stricken figure. Eighteen months earlier, his wife, Alyss, a royal Courier, died reentering a burning inn to rescue a trapped child. The fire was set by a criminal gang led by Jory Ruhl, and Will has since devoted himself to hunting down every gang member, neglecting his duties and refusing missions from Gilan, the Ranger Commandant. When the story opens, Will confronts Henry Wheeler, one of the gang members, on a rural estate. Wheeler attacks Will and falls on his own knife. Will walks away without remorse.

Meanwhile, Princess Madelyn, called Maddie, the 15-year-old daughter of Princess Regent Cassandra and Sir Horace, is caught sneaking back into Castle Araluen after a nighttime hunting excursion. Both parents feel helpless against her defiance. Gilan summons Halt, Will's retired mentor, to Castle Araluen, where he reveals his concern about Will's obsession. Halt proposes that Will take on Maddie as his apprentice: Training his goddaughter would give Will an emotional anchor, while Maddie, as future heir to the throne, needs practical skills rather than a sheltered court life. Gilan objects that no girl has ever been a Ranger, but Halt demonstrates Maddie's skill with a sling, convincing Gilan it can substitute for the longbow. Cassandra and Horace prepare a letter asking Will to take Maddie on, along with a document disinheriting her of all royal titles, to be used if necessary to curb her arrogance.

Halt and Gilan visit Will at his cabin and find him disheveled, his home in disarray. Halt accuses Will of betraying his oath, while Gilan presents the request as a personal plea from Will's oldest friends. Will asks himself what Alyss would want and concludes she would tell him to help. He agrees.

Maddie arrives expecting a holiday, accompanied by a maid and fine clothes. Will sends the maid home, dismisses Maddie's royal rank, and tells her she will live without servants. When Maddie insults Jenny, Will's old friend and a restaurateur in Wensley Village, by refusing to let Jenny address her by first name, Will shows her the disinheritance document. Training begins in earnest: Will teaches Maddie archery with a specially crafted recurve bow, knife work, camouflage, and silent movement. She practices her sling until she achieves 20 consecutive hits on helmeted targets. She receives Bumper, a piebald Ranger horse trained to buck off anyone who fails to whisper a code phrase before mounting. Once Maddie learns the phrase, a deep bond forms between her and Bumper.

Maddie's character gradually transforms. She apologizes to Jenny, befriends local teenagers, and gives a valuable pine marten pelt to a poor farmer's wife for winter warmth. After sneaking out to drink wine and enduring a grueling hangover day of training, she overhears Will confiding to his dog that Maddie is "the one bright spot" in his life. She resolves never to let him down again.

Gilan assigns Will and Maddie their first mission: investigating the death of Ranger Liam in Trelleth Fief, who was found with a broken neck, supposedly thrown from his horse. Will agrees without hesitation, marking his return to active duty. At the scene, Maddie discovers scars on two trees where a rope was stretched across the path, confirming murder. In Liam's cabin, Will finds hidden notes: a map marking three villages, each annotated with a child's name, age, and date, all within a two-week span.

Disguised as an itinerant worker and his daughter, Will and Maddie investigate the villages. They learn that a traveling entertainer called the Storyman visited each village shortly before a child vanished, telling children terrifying stories about the "Stealer in the Night," a masked abductor, and warning them never to mention him to adults. They also discover that each missing child was mistreated by their parents. One night, an intruder threatens Maddie in her room. She follows him outside and kills him with her sling when he attacks with a quattro, an Iberian throwing weapon with four blades. On his body, she finds a chart with six numbered crosses.

Will deduces they are facing an Iberian-connected slave ring that targets mistreated children, using the Storyman to identify victims and the Stealer to abduct them for sale at the slave market in Socorro. Will rides to Willow Vale, the next village on the list, and stakes out a likely victim's home. On the second night, he watches the Stealer abduct a girl. When the Stealer removes his mask, Will recognizes Jory Ruhl.

Will suppresses his fury, knowing he must follow Ruhl to rescue all 10 kidnapped children. He learns the gang's camp is at Hawkshead Bay and a slave ship is due in three days. Will and Maddie scout the camp and watch a black Iberian ship arrive, bringing the enemy's total to 18. Will devises a plan: He will shoot fire arrows at the ship to draw the slavers away, while Maddie frees the children from a cave on the beach and leads them north.

At nightfall, Will's fire arrows ignite the ship. Maddie descends the cliff, opens the cave, and begins leading the children out. The Storyman, who stayed behind, chases them, catches a girl, and threatens Tim Stoker, a brave older boy among the captive children who intervenes. Maddie kills the Storyman with a sling shot, and Tim becomes her deputy. The Iberian captain takes the burning ship out to sea, stranding Ruhl with a reduced force.

Will leads Ruhl's men on an overnight chase, then doubles back north before dawn. But Enrico, a skilled Iberian tracker among Ruhl's men, discovers where Will turned, and the slavers catch up to the children. Will orders Maddie to keep running while he stays behind. He kills Enrico and conducts a fighting retreat until his arrows run out. Captured and taken to Hawkshead Bay, Will is tied to a stake surrounded by oil-soaked firewood as Ruhl vows to burn him alive.

Maddie hides the children in a cave under Tim's care and rides back through the night. She creeps across the beach and cuts Will's bonds, but his limbs are numb from hours of constriction. When Ruhl approaches with a flaming brand, Maddie shoves Will aside but is struck in the thigh by Ruhl's javelin. Despite her wound, she uses her sling to scatter the remaining slavers before collapsing. Will finds Maddie's dropped saxe, a short single-edged knife, and throws it, striking Ruhl hilt-first on the forehead. Ruhl stumbles into the oil-soaked firewood with the brand still in his hand, and the pyre ignites. Ruhl burns to death.

Will performs emergency surgery on Maddie's leg, carries her up the cliff, and keeps vigil through the night, shedding tears for the first time since Alyss's death. At dawn, Maddie opens her eyes and asks what is for breakfast.

Six months later, at the annual Ranger Gathering, Gilan awards Maddie the bronze oakleaf, the insignia given when an apprentice is formally recognized by the Corps, after only nine months of training. Maddie becomes the first female Ranger's apprentice. Cassandra presents her with a document reinstating her as a royal princess, but Maddie asks if the reinstatement can wait: She wants to complete her full five-year training first. Horace tells Cassandra to say yes, and the Gathering erupts in celebration.
