Shantel Tessier’s 2023 novel, The Sacrifice, is a dark revenge romance set in a violent fantasy world where patriarchal power and wealth are inherited, and loyalty is forged through brutality. The story follows Laikyn Minson, who on her wedding day is forced into an arranged marriage with the ruthless Tyson Crawford, a powerful member of an organization known as the Lords. Tyson’s motives are not love but a long-simmering revenge plot against Laikyn’s family. He intends to use her as his primary weapon by dominating and demeaning her. Within this framework, the narrative explores themes of Revenge as a Destructive Cycle, Power Through Absolute Submission, and The Corrosive Impact of Betrayal on Family Loyalty. The author employs explicit trigger warnings for the book’s content, which features extreme scenarios of physical and psychological control, including rape. Tessier intentionally subverts the principles of consensual BDSM culture to create a fictional fantasy of complete social and physical domination of women by men.

Plot Summary

The novel is set in a regressive society where men dominate through violence, and women are used as transactional objects for sex and reproduction. Tyson Crawford is a freshman at Barrington University, where his life is dictated by the rules of the Lords, a powerful elite society into which he was born. During their education, Lord initiates are brutally tested to prepare them for ruling the world. In their first three years at Barrington, Lords must remain celibate, after which they are gifted a “chosen”—a woman to sexually serve them for their senior year—before graduating and marrying a “Lady.” To prove his loyalty, Tyson’s freshman initiation requires him to fight and kill another man. Though stabbed in the encounter, Tyson succeeds, setting a ruthless precedent for his future.

Tyson’s sophomore initiation, alongside fellow Lord Miles Hopper, involves retrieving a rogue Lord. They find the man’s mother and sister instead; Tyson kills the mother, and they torture the sister, but the brother fails to appear. For his junior year trial, Tyson blackmails a powerful Lord running for senator by hiring a woman to entrap him in a compromising video, forcing the man to withdraw from the race and securing victory for the Lords’ chosen candidate.

Tyson completes his final initiation as a junior by being branded on the chest in the Cathedral, the Lords’ sanctum, signifying his lifelong commitment. Soon after, he is assigned a chosen: Whitney Minson, whose father despises the Crawfords. Tyson is ordered to make Whitney choose him by any means necessary. Three years later, Whitney has died in unexplained circumstances. Meanwhile, Whitney’s younger sister, Laikyn Minson, is preparing for her arranged marriage to Luke Cabot, a high-ranking Lord she despises. 

On Laikyn’s wedding day, Luke goes missing, and her father receives orders that the ceremony will proceed with a different groom. Tyson Crawford and his best friend, Ryat Archer, storm in, revealing that the Lords have decreed Tyson will marry Laikyn in Luke’s place. Laikyn is horrified as she believes Tyson killed her sister, Whitney. When Laikyn refuses, Ryat holds her brother, Miller, at knifepoint while Tyson gives her an ultimatum: Marry him or Miller dies. Laikyn concedes, and Tyson replaces her pearl necklace with a black velvet shock collar as a wedding gift.

The wedding proceeds at the Cathedral, where their vows are sealed in a blood ritual. He then takes her to a honeymoon suite at the Minson Hotel, which her father owns, that Luke had originally booked. In an act of reproductive coercion, a doctor named Jackson, sent in place of the usual Lords’ doctor, Gavin, administers what Laikyn believes is a birth control shot. Laikyn is terrified of Tyson but also recalls being attracted to him when he dated her sister. When he rapes her, her body responds with both fear and arousal, and she experiences her first orgasm. It is the first of many sexual assaults in which Tyson both arouses and humiliates Laikyn, establishing that he is in control of her pleasure. Afterward, Tyson takes Laikyn to a dentist who secretly implants a tracker in her tooth, while claiming he is filling a cavity.

Tyson informs Laikyn that she will now work as a cocktail waitress at Blackout, and dresses her in a revealing uniform as an additional means of humiliating her. He solidifies his dominance, shocking her with the collar when she defies an order to crawl and establishing a routine where he has sex with her in his office before every shift. Laikyn longs for Tyson’s touch and willingly submits while loathing herself for being aroused.

Laikyn’s life becomes a cycle of servitude and punishment. She realizes she is developing feelings for Tyson when another waitress, Bethany, falsely implies she is sleeping with Tyson, sparking her jealousy. Laikyn confronts Tyson, who spanks her and terrifies her into submission by explaining that divorced Lords “regift” their wives to others. He does not tell Laikyn the truth: that he would never regift her or be unfaithful as she satisfies his every need. 

Laikyn’s ex-boyfriend, Collin, now a police officer, visits Blackout and questions them about a missing girl. Laikyn saw the girl at the club, but Tyson forces her to lie. Shortly afterward, Laikyn’s father, Frank Minson, secretly ambushes her, giving her a burner phone and revealing that Bethany is his spy. Laikyn soon discovers that the phone is only used to send her photos of herself, proving that someone is watching her on her father’s behalf. 

One night, a fight breaks out at the club, and Laikyn is stabbed. While she recovers, she learns from Tyson’s brutal interrogation of her attacker that someone planned the attack. 

Tyson bans Laikyn from working at Blackout and confines her to the house to keep her safe. In a moment of rebellion, she drugs Tyson with GHB she finds among her wedding things, ties him up, and takes sexual control over him. Tyson breaks his restraints and punishes Laikyn with rope bondage and burning wax. Afterward, Laikyn learns that the GHB belonged to Luke, who planned to drug her on their wedding night and sell her into sexual slavery as a prized virgin. When Laikyn tells Tyson about her father’s secret phone, he concludes that Luke and Frank Minson were working together. Laikyn decides to trust her husband, and Tyson is increasingly protective of her.

Soon after, Bethany lures Laikyn into a go-go cage at Blackout just as a fire erupts. Laikyn is abducted by Luke and Jackson, who pull out her tooth containing Tyson’s tracker. They take her to a psychiatric ward, where she is drugged, restrained, and her jaw is wired shut after she bites Luke. 

Tyson, believing Laikyn died in the fire, begins a bloody rampage, torturing and killing anyone involved. He eventually learns Laikyn is alive at the psych ward after discovering the real Bethany was admitted there while a different body was identified as hers at the fire scene. He rescues Laikyn and is shocked to find Whitney Minson alive at the same facility. Taking both women to Carnage, the fortified compound of the allied Spade brothers, Tyson learns Laikyn is pregnant with twins, the result of a fake birth control shot orchestrated by Luke. Having failed to sell her as a virgin, he planned to get her pregnant, as pregnant women were also valuable in the sex trafficking business. Tyson now realizes he loves Laikyn and welcomes the idea of having a family with her. 

At Carnage, the full truth unravels. Laikyn confronts Whitney, who confesses she faked her death three years prior with Luke and was complicit in the plan to sell Laikyn. Whitney admits she was jealous of Laikyn because she wanted to marry Tyson herself, despite being Tyson’s chosen, which meant she must become Lady to a different Lord. Whitney attempts to bargain for her freedom by revealing the location of Ashtyn, a long-lost chosen of Saint, one of the Spade brothers. Saint takes Whitney for interrogation. 

Tyson orchestrates a final confrontation at the Cathedral. He lures Luke by sending him pictures of Laikyn in bondage, but when Luke arrives, he finds Whitney tied to the Lords’ table instead. After capturing Luke, Tyson tortures him by pulling out all his teeth with pliers. Miller arrives and holds Laikyn at gunpoint, but Ryat shoots him. Tyson works out the entire scheme: Luke, Miller, and Frank Minson were running a human trafficking ring out of Blackout and the Minson Hotels, abducting women and, in some cases, brutally murdering them.

Tyson confesses his own long game. Three years ago, Frank Minson framed him for Whitney’s supposed murder to have him stripped of his high-ranking Lord status. In exchange for his freedom and silence, the Lords gave Tyson ownership of Blackout and a unique privilege: The right to marry any woman he chose, free from their arrangements. His choice of Laikyn was intended as ultimate revenge against Frank. However, he fell in love with Laikyn. With all secrets exposed, Tyson kills Frank and Miller Minson, allowing Laikyn to take control of the family empire.

The Epilogue jumps forward 18 years, showing Tyson and Laikyn happily married with teenage twins, Halston and Hartlyn. Tyson is proud of his wife as she launches her own business with a friend. While he has become a devoted husband and father, their private life remains one of dark passion and willing submission, with Laikyn fully embracing her role as his Lady.
