The Sentinel is a novel by Lee Child and Andrew Child featuring Jack Reacher, a former U.S. Army Military Police officer who drifts across the country with no fixed home.

Reacher arrives in Nashville, Tennessee, finds a small music venue, and enjoys a performance. Afterward, the guitarist explains that bar owner Derek Lockhart refused to pay the band and threatened violence. Reacher incapacitates the bouncer and forces Lockhart to pay $2,500 in fees and penalties, threatening further consequences if Lockhart ever cheats another band.

In a nearby town, Rusty Rutherford, the recently fired IT manager, ventures out for the first time in a week. A ransomware attack, in which malicious software encrypts a network and demands payment for decryption, has locked all municipal systems. Rutherford was blamed despite having warned his superiors. Reacher arrives after hitching a ride with an insurance negotiator sent to handle the ransom. On the main street, he detects a coordinated ambush and pulls Rutherford to safety, fighting off the attackers before police arrest both men.

The attackers are Russian operatives led by a senior agent named Natasha. Their handler communicates through Speranski, an elderly Russian operative active in the area for over 50 years, who recently tortured and killed a woman to extract information about Rutherford. At the courthouse, Detective Goodyear dismisses the kidnapping, refuses to involve the FBI, and warns Reacher to leave.

Over burgers, Rutherford explains that he had tried to build a defense system called Guard Dog (his ex-FBI partner Sarah Sands preferred the name Cerberus) and a backup, but both failed. He refuses to leave town, insisting he must recover his work laptop to prove he warned his superiors. Outside the diner, three men mistake Reacher for an insurance employee and attack; Reacher hospitalizes all three.

A man posing as Detective Wallwork interrogates Reacher and reveals himself as a federal agent with the Infrastructure Security Agency, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, investigating whether Rutherford colluded in the attack. Reacher agrees to leave if Wallwork protects Rutherford. However, Speranski arranges for Marty, a corrupt ex-cop, to deliver Reacher to an abandoned gas station. Reacher overpowers Marty, who describes years of blackmail, including disposing of suitcases containing a dismembered body. The Russian team evacuates when Rutherford spots the female agent watching his building and flees toward the airport. Reacher races back to town, where Rutherford reappears, having been unable to flee.

Officer Rule, a patrol officer, confirms that murdered journalist Toni Garza's body parts were found in suitcases, matching Marty's account and linking Garza's killers to those pursuing Rutherford. Sands arrives with a critical discovery: Although Cerberus failed to create a usable backup, it protected existing data on the backup server from the ransomware. The servers are both commercially valuable and forensically important, but Rutherford discarded them after believing they had failed.

Reacher and Rutherford visit Henry Klostermann, a businessman living in the locally infamous "Spy House," once owned by Soviet spy brothers named Klich in the 1950s. Klostermann claims he hired Garza to research his father's immigration from Germany and needs old property records from Rutherford's server. He pays $10,000 without hesitation, raising Reacher's suspicions.

At an abandoned factory, Reacher meets FBI Special Agent Margaret Fisher, working undercover inside the Russian cell. Fisher reveals that Russia has an agent inside Oak Ridge National Laboratory, near Knoxville, Tennessee, attempting to steal The Sentinel, a classified program protecting election software in 48 states. Their broader goal is to erode faith in American elections. A record in the town's archive could reveal the spy's identity. The Russians burned the physical archive, launched the ransomware to lock the digital version, and pursue Rutherford because his server, protected by Cerberus, contains a preliminary copy. A specialist from Moscow is due in roughly 48 hours, and Fisher asks Reacher to find the server first.

Through a chain of coercion involving a truck driver and a diner owner, Reacher and Sands track the discarded servers to a self-storage facility and find all eight intact. Rutherford confirms the data is undamaged. Reacher clones the server, giving one copy to Wallwork and selling another to Klostermann for $15,000. Reacher then discovers Klostermann is organizing a neo-Nazi rally for April 20, Hitler's birthday, and reports to Wallwork that Klostermann is a Nazi rather than a Russian agent, meaning the Russians still lack the server.

With the Moscow specialist arriving early and planning to target Rutherford's mother, Fisher devises a final plan: Reacher poses as a bodyguard selling the server, and Fisher "buys" it, positioning herself as the operation's hero. At the exchange, the specialist is already present. Fisher takes the server and signals Reacher in Morse code to stay and help. At the Russians' motel, a technician identifies a document appearing to reveal a third Klich brother. Fisher photographs it and facilitates Reacher's escape.

Reacher suspects a setup. Sands compares Fisher's photograph to the actual document on their server. The original lists Natalia Matusak, Klostermann's mother, as the third property owner alongside the Klich brothers, identifying her as their sister and a Soviet agent. Fisher's version was altered to show a fictional third brother designed to misdirect the FBI. The Russians know Fisher is a mole and have been feeding her disinformation. When Sands inadvertently transmits data from Fisher's cloned phone, the Russians confirm their disinformation reached its target, making Fisher expendable.

From old construction permits, Sands and Reacher deduce that the Klich brothers built a Cold War bunker adjacent to the Spy House. Reacher enters the property, cuts power to the bunker, and draws the Moscow specialist above ground. After a brutal fight, Reacher defeats him. Wallwork calls with critical news: Klostermann's daughter, Diane Smith, works at Oak Ridge and is the Russian spy. The FBI is moving to arrest her.

Reacher descends into the bunker and finds Fisher manacled to the ceiling, being tortured by Speranski, Klostermann's handler. Reacher defeats the remaining agents and confronts Speranski, who confesses to killing Garza. When Speranski lunges for a hidden gun, Reacher kills him. Reacher frees Fisher but finds the exit sealed by the escaped housekeeper. Fighting severe claustrophobia, he discovers a ventilation shaft and climbs it in total darkness, emerging into the open field.

Reacher unlocks Klostermann's burner phone with the code 1218, Stalin's birthday, revealing Klostermann's true Soviet allegiance beneath his Nazi cover. He calls the most frequently dialed number, and Goodyear answers, confirming he is Klostermann's mole. In Klostermann's study, Reacher finds a portrait with Hitler on the front and Stalin on the back, proof of the dual deception. When Goodyear arrives armed, Reacher disarms him and reveals that Klostermann was a Russian agent who manipulated the neo-Nazis. Reacher forces Goodyear to cooperate with the FBI in identifying other Brotherhood cells nationwide.

Two weeks later, Rutherford emerges to a warm welcome: The coffee shop patrons greet him, the barista offers his drink on the house, and the town's systems have been restored after the insurance negotiator reduced the ransom. Reacher watches Rutherford walk home, then accepts a ride back to Nashville, intending to hear a band play and make sure they get paid.
