Margaret is a resilient woman who has spent years enduring a difficult marriage and a deeply haunted Victorian home. She relies on a strict set of rules to survive her environment, choosing to adapt to the ghostly occurrences rather than flee. Fiercely protective of her daughter Katherine, Margaret is determined to hide the house's supernatural terrors, along with her husband's sudden disappearance.

Hal is Margaret’s husband and Katherine's father, a writer who has struggled with alcohol addiction for much of his life. After years of projecting his anger and volatile behavior onto his family, his sudden disappearance from their haunted Victorian home leaves behind a trail of questions. He refuses to communicate with his daughter, prompting her arrival to investigate his whereabouts.
Katherine is Margaret and Hal’s adult daughter, a strong-willed and successful bank manager. Having left home for college to escape her father's toxic behavior, she rarely visits until his sudden disappearance brings her back. She struggles with her own inherited tendencies toward anger and alcohol use while tirelessly attempting to uncover what happened to her father and assess her mother's well-being.
Master Vale, historically known as Theodore Vale, is an imposing and malevolent spirit confined to the basement of the Victorian house. Tall, thin, and possessing milky, red-rimmed eyes, he represents the greatest physical danger to the home's residents. Historically the abused son of the house's original owner, he now inflicts his wrath upon the property's ghostly children and terrifies Margaret.
Edie is a squat, motherly woman with close-cropped hair who lives next door to Margaret. As Margaret’s closest confidante, Edie listens patiently to her accounts of the house's supernatural events without judgment. She provides a warm, empathetic presence in Margaret's otherwise isolated life, frequently offering advice on how to handle Katherine's arrival.
Best Friend of Margaret
Fredricka is the ghostly housekeeper of the Victorian home, easily recognized by her tall stature and a large, bloody gash down the side of her head. Unlike the other spirits, she is a benevolent and caring presence who regularly brews tea for Margaret and rearranges the furniture. She kindly agrees to stay out of sight when Katherine visits.
Caretaker of Margaret
The Prankster Children are the ghosts of several missing local children who were historically murdered within the Victorian house. They frequently try to lure the living down into the basement and communicate cryptic messages, making Margaret's daily routine chaotic and unpredictable.
Elias is the ghost of a nine- or ten-year-old boy who haunts the Victorian house. He does not speak but is prone to aggressive outbursts, sometimes trying to bite Margaret if she invades his personal space. Margaret manages his tantrums by temporarily digging up the bones of his mother to soothe him.

Angelica is a young girl and one of the mischievous child ghosts haunting the house. Prone to irksome pranks, she frequently attempts to draw the living into the dangerous basement where Master Vale resides, forcing Margaret to constantly stay on guard around her.

Father Cyrus is a Catholic priest from St. Dymphna’s who visits Margaret and Hal's home at regular intervals. Though the couple is not particularly religious, they rely on his rites and exorcisms to temporarily quiet the house's spirits, especially the malevolent forces gathered in the basement.
Noelle is Margaret's sister and her only other familial support system. When Hal's temper and abusive behavior toward Katherine escalated to a breaking point during Katherine's teenage years, Noelle took her niece in to provide a safe living environment.
Claire is Katherine's ex-girlfriend. The two recently broke up, adding to the emotional stress Katherine carries when she returns to her childhood home to investigate her father's disappearance.
