The Wife

The novel opens with a flash-forward. Angela Powell, the narrator, describes lying to Detective Corrine Duncan of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit about her husband Jason's whereabouts, becoming "the wife who lied to protect her husband." Angela fabricates an alibi, weaving Jason's presence into real events: a dinner delivery, a phone call from their son Spencer at camp, and a streamed movie. When Duncan reveals that a woman named Kerry Lynch is missing, Angela feigns outrage. After Duncan leaves, Angela calls Jason and asks if he did something to Kerry.

The narrative rewinds to the origin of the crisis. Jason Powell is an NYU economics professor, bestselling author of Equalonomics, media commentator, and head of FSS Consulting, a corporate social responsibility advisory firm. Over dinner, he mentions that a graduate student intern named Rachel Sutton complained to his associate Zack Hawkins about a remark Jason made when she showed him her engagement ring. Angela, who never attended college and is self-conscious about it, accepts his account without concern.

Rachel files a police complaint, telling officers that Jason "encouraged" sexual contact. Duncan interviews Rachel, who describes entering Jason's private office bathroom and finding him in a state of undress, touching himself. Rachel says he grabbed her arm and tried to pull her hand toward his body before she jerked away. She recalls his underwear: white boxer shorts with candy canes. Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Brian King agrees to monitor the case but doubts it can be prosecuted.

Angela discovers the story on social media before Jason tells her. She warns Spencer, then receives calls from her best friend, Susanna Coleman, a veteran cohost on the morning show New Day, and from Colin Harris, Jason's best friend and a civil attorney who offers to find a criminal defense lawyer. Angela's background is gradually revealed: born Angela Mullen, she grew up in a working-class area of East Hampton, Long Island. At sixteen, she accepted a ride from a stranger named Charles Franklin, who kidnapped and held her captive in a locked bedroom in Pittsburgh for three years. She was rescued at nineteen when police fatally shot Franklin during a manhunt near Niagara Falls. A second captive, known to Angela only as Sarah, was killed by Franklin during the escape. Angela returned home with a one-year-old son, Spencer. Her parents never disclosed the kidnapping publicly, and Angela has maintained this secrecy ever since.

Colin arranges for criminal defense attorney Olivia Randall to represent Jason. Angela discovers a Facebook photo of Rachel kissing another intern, Wilson Stewart, only weeks before Rachel's engagement. Olivia uses this to publicly discredit Rachel. Angela also secretly removes Jason's candy-cane boxer shorts from his dresser and disposes of them to eliminate corroborating evidence.

A new accuser emerges. Kerry Lynch, vice president of marketing at Oasis Inc., a water purification company and one of Jason's consulting clients, tells Duncan that Jason raped her in her hotel room six weeks earlier, then offered her $100,000 for her silence. Duncan obtains hotel surveillance footage showing the two entering the room together and Jason leaving after an apparent argument. Kerry provides photographs of bruised wrists and clothing with semen.

When Angela learns that police visited their home to question Jason about Kerry, and that Jason lied to her about the visit, she confronts him. Jason claims Kerry was supposed to help him expose corruption at Oasis but may have turned against him. Meanwhile, Duncan discovers through phone records and database searches that Angela Powell was once Angela Mullen, the kidnapping survivor. ADA King secures a warrant for Jason's DNA.

Jason confesses to Angela that he has been having an affair with Kerry and that the DNA will match. Angela sends Spencer to camp to shield him from the media. Jason is arrested and arraigned on charges of rape and attempted offensive physical touching. Kerry and Rachel, represented by victims' rights attorney Janice Martinez, file a civil lawsuit.

Duncan visits Angela and reveals that Jason was once in a car accident with a woman he had hired for sex, and that he blamed Angela's "problems" for his behavior. Duncan tells Angela she knows about the kidnapping and urges her to consider whether Jason preys on vulnerable women. Separately, Olivia asks Angela to help the defense by acknowledging her lack of physical intimacy with Jason, revealing that Jason disclosed Angela's past to his lawyer. Angela is furious at this betrayal.

Susanna pushes Angela to confront what happened in her marriage. Angela reveals that the last time she and Jason were intimate, she suggested he tie her up, but when he buckled his belt around her wrists, she had a severe flashback, struggled, and told him to stop. He continued. They never discussed it, and their physical relationship ended. Susanna tells Angela plainly that this constitutes rape.

Angela reads Jason's email to Olivia containing his admissions: Kerry initiated the affair, he used a belt on Kerry at her request, and Kerry had been pressuring him to leave Angela. He believes Kerry fabricated the assault to retaliate. Angela throws Jason out.

When Duncan asks about Jason's whereabouts the night Kerry disappeared, Angela lies and says he was home. She then calls Jason and learns he was at Colin's apartment. She instructs Spencer to confirm he spoke to both parents during his phone call, dragging her son into the false alibi.

Angela files for divorce on Colin's advice to protect her assets from potential civil judgments. The investigation into Kerry's disappearance shifts toward Tom Fisher, Oasis's CEO and Kerry's former lover. ADA King grows doubtful and dismisses the criminal charges.

Angela and Jason begin tentatively reconciling, finalizing their divorce on paper while privately resuming their relationship. Jason reveals that he told Kerry about Angela's kidnapping, a disclosure that prompts Angela to secretly purchase a prepaid phone and open an offshore bank account, planning a permanent escape. Kerry's body is found on a beach, killed by a blow to the head. Jason is arrested for murder. Angela testifies before a grand jury under transactional immunity, which prevents her from being prosecuted for anything related to the case, and admits she lied about Jason's alibi. The prosecutor's question about whether Jason chews Nicorette gum reveals that gum was found near the body.

In the novel's final section, Angela's journal entries reveal the full truth. She drove to Kerry's house that night to confront her. Kerry taunted Angela, revealing she knew about the kidnapping. When Kerry spoke Spencer's name, Angela killed her with a heavy crystal egg from the coffee table. Angela called her mother, Ginny, who drove from East Hampton to help. Angela cleaned the scene while Ginny transported the body to Ocean Beach and independently planted a piece of Jason's Nicorette gum to frame him.

Angela's journal also exposes far darker secrets. After a year of captivity, Franklin threatened to kill Angela unless she helped him abduct another girl. Angela persuaded him to drive to East Hampton, where she spotted her best friend Trisha Faulkner hitchhiking and lured her into the car. Spencer, Angela reveals, is not her biological son but Trisha's, conceived during captivity. Angela has a uterine condition that prevented her from carrying children, the same condition that caused her miscarriages during her marriage. Most devastatingly, during the escape near Niagara Falls, Franklin chose to kill Angela, not Trisha. Angela saved herself by arguing she looked older and could pass as his wife. Franklin spared Angela and killed Trisha instead.

Angela, Ginny, and Spencer have fled under false identities to an unnamed island, where Angela works as a chef. Duncan visits Ginny's house in East Hampton and finds it occupied by a friend named Lucy, who says Ginny and Angela have left town. Duncan discovers a photograph of teenage Angela with Trisha and notices that Trisha's hip tattoo matches the description of Franklin's unidentified second victim. Having already noticed Franklin's physical features in photographs of Spencer while reviewing the Pittsburgh police files, Duncan now understands the full picture: Spencer is likely Trisha's biological child. She calls ADA King, determined to find Angela and learn what Jason knows about his wife.
