Plot Summary

The novel is a psychological thriller that follows two women whose perspectives create a sustained deception. Joanna's narration strongly implies she is the wife of defense attorney Leo Drakos and the mother of his two young children. This framing persists until a climactic reveal exposes the truth about Joanna's identity and the depth of her delusions.

Piper Reynard arrives in Westport, Connecticut, after fleeing San Diego ten months earlier. She has assumed a new name, purchased the Phoenix Recovery Center, and established herself as a wellness entrepreneur offering meditation, yoga, and recovery programs. She cannot use her real counseling license, which is tied to her former identity. Nightmares haunt her: a woman chases her screaming "Murderer."

Meanwhile, Joanna describes Leo as emerging from a three-month depression following his wife's death approximately a year earlier. She cares for his children, eight-year-old Evie and six-year-old Stelli, and consults her therapist, Celeste, about helping Leo recover. When Leo visits the Phoenix Recovery Center on a legal matter, Joanna persuades him to attend a meditation workshop there.

Piper is immediately attracted to Leo and clears her schedule to attend the workshop. Leo finds the meditation unhelpful but invites Piper to lunch, where they bond over shared interests, including the Save the Sound environmental organization. At Leo's Memorial Day party, Joanna spots Piper and is unsettled by the stranger's ease with Leo. Searching online afterward, Joanna finds almost no trace of Piper and discovers that "Reynard" is the name of a medieval trickster fox.

Over the following weeks, Leo and Piper grow closer through dinners and flirtatious exchanges. Joanna grows increasingly alarmed, following Leo to a restaurant and reading Piper's emails on his work computer. When Joanna confronts Piper after a yoga class, Piper reports the encounter to Leo, who assures her Joanna will be gone soon.

When Joanna's mother breaks her leg and Joanna leaves to care for her, Leo has Joanna's belongings packed and delivered to her mother's home, telling her their arrangement is no longer healthy. Joanna is devastated; Leo tells her he is in love with Piper. He formally severs the relationship through legal papers. Celeste and Joanna's lawyer friend Janice both urge acceptance, but Joanna vows to uncover who Piper really is.

Leo proposes to Piper, who accepts. When they tell the children, Stelli tells Piper he wishes a tiger shark would eat her; Piper leans in and whispers a veiled warning that wishing harm on others often comes back onto them. On the morning of the wedding, Joanna takes the children to the beach, where Stelli darts into traffic and Joanna reflexively swats him. A bystander reports the swat as child abuse, and the wedding is canceled. Leo obtains a protective order against Joanna, and he and Piper marry quietly at a courthouse.

Piper moves into Leo's house and struggles to establish authority. Stelli remains hostile, the nanny Rebecca guards old routines, and Leo's mother, Evangelia, is skeptical of the new wife. Piper intercepts a letter Joanna sent to the children and hides it. Meanwhile, Joanna pursues a parallel investigation. While following Piper downtown, she witnesses a man named Brent McDonald call Piper by a different name. Brent tells Joanna that Piper resembles Pamela Dunn, the wife of his late friend Matthew Dunn, who drowned along with his daughter Mia in a sailing accident while Pamela was the sole survivor.

Joanna flies to San Diego and meets Ava Dunn, Matthew's ex-wife, who believes the accident was murder. Ava reveals that Pamela married Matthew during his separation from Ava, pushed for a quick divorce, and inherited over $20 million after the deaths. From the marriage certificate, Joanna discovers Piper was previously listed as "Pamela Rayfield Sherwood, Widowed," indicating yet another dead husband. An obituary reveals that Ethan Sherwood died at 21 from a hiking fall in Los Angeles while Piper was present, and that his trust fund had matured the week of his death. Joanna also visits Piper's mother, Marion Rayfield, a cold and controlling microbiologist. Marion describes Piper's austere upbringing and acknowledges that "anything is possible" when asked if her daughter could be capable of murder.

Piper discovers that Ava has found her online and preemptively tells Leo a version of her past, framing Ava as an obsessive stalker. Leo promises to dismiss any contact from Ava. Seeking to bond with the children and start new family traditions, Piper convinces Leo to cancel their Christmas trip to St. Barts and take the family to the house in Bar Harbor, Maine, including a hike on high trails. She prepares smoothies for the children with added "liquid vitamins," carefully giving each child the correct glass.

On Christmas morning, Rebecca, whom Piper has dismissed for the week, secretly calls Joanna to warn her about the trip. Joanna drives seven hours north, hides in the guesthouse, and monitors the house through a security camera app still linked to her phone. Before leaving Connecticut, she posts files from her desktop to Facebook, the significance of which becomes clear later.

When the family arrives in Maine, Piper is unsettled by the late wife's presence throughout the house. On the first night, Evie has a nightmare about her mommy falling from a cliff. The following day, while Leo and Piper are upstairs, Joanna emerges from the woods and grabs Stelli on the back deck, telling him Piper plans to push him off the mountain. She stuns him with a stun gun and runs toward the cliff's edge, carrying his limp body. Leo catches up, and Joanna stuns him too. Piper arrives with Evie and tries to talk Joanna down. Then Evie screams: "She's going to push Stelli just like she pushed Mommy!" This revelation shatters the novel's central deception. Joanna was never Leo's wife; she was his legal assistant. Leo's actual wife, Olivia, died on this same cliff, pushed by Joanna, who then forged a suicide note. Evie had witnessed the murder but suppressed the memory.

Joanna pulls a gun and fires at Stelli. Piper throws herself over the boy, and the bullet shatters her upper arm. Police arrive, and Joanna is arrested.

In the hospital, Leo explains the full history. Joanna had been his invaluable assistant who insinuated herself into the household after Olivia's death, which everyone believed was suicide, as Olivia had severe depression. Joanna cared for the children and gradually began acting as though she were Leo's wife. Throughout their courtship, Leo had allowed Piper to believe Joanna was his estranged wife, concealing the truth that Olivia had died. Leo fires Rebecca for secretly communicating with Joanna.

From jail, Joanna confirms the scope of her delusion. She pushed Olivia because Olivia, in despair, had said she might jump, and Joanna decided to help her follow through so she could become the children's mother. Joanna also reveals that Celeste is her half-sister: the daughter of Joanna's father and the woman he abandoned Joanna's family for. Celeste never knew about Joanna. Joanna had chosen Celeste as her therapist deliberately, hacked her computer, stolen all confidential patient files, and posted them to Celeste's Facebook page, resulting in Celeste's license suspension.

Three weeks later, Piper recovers at home while Evangelia stays to help. Leo's mother apologizes for misjudging Piper and tells her, "You are my daughter now." Stelli returns a glass rhinoceros he stole from Piper, apologizes, and says grace at dinner, thanking God "for giving us Piper to take care of us." The novel closes on an ambiguous note: Piper reflects on her family as perfect, "not like the others, whose flaws and imperfections had brought them tragedy," and thinks that if anything goes wrong, "she'd have to start all over again," echoing the pattern of reinvention that has defined her life.
