Plot Summary

Fifteen-year-old Jesse Morgan sits on a rocky outcrop near her family's beachfront home, talking to the ocean waves. Thin and wearing oversized clothes, she has downy hair regrowing after chemotherapy for leukemia. Jesse has already set a plan in motion: She has called Kelly Vincent, her social worker, and asked her to contact Inspire a Wish, a foundation that grants wishes to seriously ill children. Jesse wants a customized video experience, a story of her life that her family can keep and revisit after she is gone, so they will never forget her.

Jesse's illness has fractured her family. Her mother, Mandy, has accepted that Jesse's prognosis is terminal. Her father, Dean Morgan, a lawyer, cannot accept it, and his grief has hardened into rage. Their marriage is deeply strained: Dean's desperate pursuit of overseas cures clashes with Mandy's acceptance of the medical consensus. Jesse's eight-year-old brother, Sam, quietly absorbs the tension, denied the puppy he craves and the normal childhood he deserves. When Kelly meets with Dean and Mandy to discuss Jesse's wish, Dean erupts, seeing it as an admission of defeat, and storms out.

The task falls to Alex Daniels, a 29-year-old designer who specializes in 3D computer-generated imagery (CGI) at TriOptic Studios, a small visual effects company. Alex's boss, Ian Williams, the owner's son-in-law, orders him to the hospital. Alex resists. A loner who grew up in the foster care system after his mother died when he was seven, Alex moved through multiple homes and never knew his father. His only companion is Max, a golden retriever, and his neat townhouse represents the first real security he has ever had. Ian's threat that refusing could cost him his job triggers deep anxiety.

Alex's first visit to the Paediatric Oncology Ward is a disaster. Kelly carries a folder that reminds him of social workers from his childhood, and their introduction is tense. Jesse and her roommate Amy, a fellow patient and her best friend, explain the vision, but Alex tells Jesse it is too ambitious. Jesse, hurt and furious, throws him out. Sandy, the charge nurse, retrieves his forgotten helmet and encourages him to reconsider.

Alex returns the next day and apologizes. Jesse, charmed by his honesty about being threatened with termination, agrees to work with him. In the hospital garden, she shows him a sketchbook of family places: parks, beaches, and a rotunda where her mother once whispered about seeing Jesse as a bride. Jesse tells Alex she believes in him, words no one has ever said to him. They shake hands on a deal.

Dean remains hostile and bans Alex from the ward. When the family learns that Jesse's latest chemotherapy has failed and no compatible bone marrow donors exist, even after Sam previously underwent a failed transplant attempt for his sister, the family is devastated. In the hospital playroom, Alex bonds with Sam over drawing pictures of Max, and Sam defends Alex when Dean confronts him, telling Dean that Alex can help Jesse in ways the family cannot. Amy is in remission and soon to be discharged, and Ryan and Luke, two other teenage patients, phone TriOptic Studios to demand that Alex continue.

Kelly calls Alex, apologizes, and tells him Mandy has given permission for the project. Alex enlists Steve, his closest colleague, along with Sarah, Charlie, and Phil, other colleagues at TriOptic Studios, who volunteer after hours. He deepens his bond with Jesse through a surprise hot air balloon ride along the coastline, during which Jesse shares memories of Dean serving as a certified race starter at her athletics meets. Alex begins to understand Dean's grief. His relationship with Kelly also deepens as they discover shared loneliness and a love of old black-and-white movies.

Kelly tells Alex that Jesse has weeks, not months. Alex asks detailed questions about bone marrow matching, then visits Sandy and requests testing. He has the right blood type, AB positive, matching Jesse's rare type, but initial results show insufficient markers. He is crushed but tells no one. He visits Mandy at the family home, where she agrees to record her poems for inclusion in the wish and tells him there is no such thing as false hope.

Alex and his team work through the night to complete the digital component. Ryan and Luke convince Frank Wallace, TriOptics' owner, to see Alex's work. Impressed, Frank proposes a business partnership centered on Alex's personal project: affordable software allowing anyone to create 3D CGI stories. Alex accepts on the condition that Steve lead the studio.

Jesse's condition deteriorates, and she is briefly readmitted. Alex carries her to her favorite rock on the beach, where Dean arrives. Jesse cries out for her father, who sweeps her into his arms. Dean turns to Alex and thanks him. The two men make peace.

On the soundstage at TriOptic Studios, featuring a massive curved screen wall, Jesse and her family are filmed re-enacting scenes from their lives. Sam's drawings and Mandy's recorded poems are woven into the visuals. Amy, Ryan, and Luke arrive as a surprise. For the final scene, Jesse emerges in a white vintage dress Kelly selected, carrying daisies and wearing a wig, and walks toward her family in the rotunda, fulfilling her mother's whispered dream. Alex then places a golden retriever puppy on the floor. It runs to Sam, and the collar tag reads that the puppy belongs to him. Dean whispers to Mandy that he loves her with all his heart.

That same day, Sandy calls: A senior technician has re-examined Alex's earlier bone marrow test and found potentially viable markers. Alex undergoes a biopsy secretly. Christine, Jesse's doctor, confirms enough markers exist for a transplant. The procedure is risky, but Dean and Mandy agree there is no alternative. Jesse survives the surgery but does not wake immediately. Alex, recovering from the donation, cannot explain his absence to Kelly.

Jesse wakes. When Alex visits, Sam innocently bumps his sore hip and mentions his own pain from his earlier donation attempt. Dean, overhearing, realizes Alex was the donor and offers the deepest thanks a father can give.

Three months later, Jesse's body rejects the transplant. Alex rushes to the hospital. Jesse, frail but lucid, tells him she always knew he was the donor. She has made peace with dying and urges Alex to pursue his relationship with Kelly, telling him that letting people love him is the whole point of living.

The community gathers to watch the completed wish in a hospital theater: photo montages, the balloon ride, Mandy's poems, Sam's drawings brought to life, and music from Jesse's playlists. Frank announces that TriOptics will offer similar wishes to other children. Jesse stands, and everyone rises in a standing ovation.

One year later, Jesse has died. Her family and community gather on the beach. Alex climbs the rocks with Mandy to Jesse's spot and shows her an engagement ring. He wants to marry Kelly, a tribute to Jesse, who brought them together. He asks if Kelly will say yes. Mandy answers yes.
