Character Analysis

Bryony Devaliant

Bryony Devaliant is the dynamic protagonist of The Wolf and the Crown of Blood, evolving from a struggling mortal into a self-possessed demigoddess. Initially, her identity is defined by her role as the youngest Anchor of the Shroud and Princess of the Blood. The titles refer to Bryony’s family’s heritage, the Devaliant rule being known as the Crown of the Blood because of the blood-price its members pay to keep intact the magical boundary between the mortal and godly realms. Bryony’s position as an Anchor subjects her to a ritualized death and resurrection every 14 days, a traumatic cycle that forces her to endure pain silently. She has carved five scars into her arm as a grounding ritual, since she looks to them to regain her sense of self after coming back from the dead. Bryony’s life illustrates The Cost of Duty and Sacrifice, as she has been conditioned to see her body as a tool for the stability of the realms, remarking to Evander, “You’re just another kind of knife” (8). When this lifelong purpose is abruptly revoked by Alexios, Bryony experiences an existential crisis, revealing how completely her identity has been subsumed by her function.

The revocation of her duty serves as a catalyst for Bryony’s character, forcing her to find herself outside her predetermined role as an Anchor. Bryony’s journey from this point on is characterized by a growing defiance and the reclamation of her agency. This transformation begins with small acts of rebellion, such as her self-sacrifice in the temple courtyard, and escalates when she publicly reveals her oathbreaker status to sabotage her own wedding. Her encounters with Evander are central to this change. When he allows her to carve into his flesh, it marks the first time she wields a blade for her own purpose rather than being its victim. This act is a cathartic release of a lifetime of suppressed rage, illustrating the theme of Reclaiming Agency with Violence.

Bryony’s development is one of integration, where she learns to embrace the monstrous parts of herself that her trauma has created. She does not reject the anger and violence she discovers within; instead, she learns to wield it with intention. Her soulbond with Evander is a partnership forged in shared brutality and understanding. By choosing to fight in the Colosseum Eternal, she rejects the protection of her Chosen status and instead chooses to earn her place in Scillari through her own strength. Her ascension into a demigoddess, complete with wings, is the physical manifestation of her transformation. She is no longer just a Devaliant, a sacrifice, or a princess, but a powerful being who has taken ownership of both her pain and her power.

Evander (The Wolf)

Evander, known as “the Wolf,” is a protagonist and main love interest of the novel He is a dynamic, round character who begins as an antihero and evolves into Bryony’s lover and soulmate, also known as her “Chosen.” As the Eternal of Light and Alexios’s most feared Enforcer, Evander is introduced as a remorseless and brutal killer. His actions are governed by a violent code of honor, and he takes a grim pride in his craft as an assassin, reveling in bloodshed and torture He justifies his slaughter of oathbreakers and fleshtraders as a necessary evil, a penance for the atrocities committed against his people during the war known as the “Devouring.” This past trauma, particularly the loss of his mother and the mutilation of his brother, Bastien, fuels a deep-seated hatred for the Devaliant bloodline. This history informs his identity as a “morally black bastard” who has embraced violence as both a duty and a release.

Beneath his sadistic exterior, Evander is defined by a largely repressed grief, as well as deep loyalties. The overgrown roses in his mother’s garden and the secret griefwood chamber in his tower are symbols of the wounds he carries. Although his relationship with his brother Bastien is strained, it is clear Evander is very protective of him. It is Evander who used his magic to create “shadow” wings for Bastien after his younger brother’s own wings were ripped off by humans. Similarly, Evander is also loyal to his friend Amara, his capacity for connections foreshadowing his soulmate bond with Bryony. Meeting Bryony is a catalyst for Evander’s transformation since it forces him to connect with parts of himself outside his role as the “Wolf.”

For instance, he has ignored his great skills as a healer and gardener since the war, but for Bryony, he if forced to use his healer’s power, and in teaching her how to garden, he rediscovers his connection with the living soil of Scillari.

Evander’s love for Bryony also forces him to realize his own potential for kinghood. Satisfied to be Alexios’s Enforcer till meeting Bryony, Evander defies Alexios to protect her and severs his bond of servitude. As the novel ends, he is no longer just an Enforcer for Alexios, but a king who rules over his realm with justice.

Alexios

Alexios, the Eternal of Storms, serves as the primary antagonist of the novel. He is a complex, ambiguous character whose actions drive much of the central conflict. As the god-king of Asteria and the sole maintainer of the Shroud, he wields immense power, which he uses to enforce a brutal and unforgiving order upon the realms. However, his motivations are complicated, since he is shown to be crushed by the weight of his responsibilities. Upholding the Shroud requires tremendous magical power which drains him, and as the king of gods, he can hear the thoughts of his “Claimed,” or the thousands of humans marked under his protection. The psychic noise from the thoughts constantly haunts him, making him prefer isolation. Alexios justifies his cruelty, such as manipulating Bryony’s oathbreaker status, as a practical necessity for maintaining stability. This mindset makes him a key example of The Corrupting Effect of Power.

Alexios is also characterized by a pragmatic and calculating intelligence. He understands the mechanics of power and often wields manipulation to uphold it, using loopholes in the Accords to achieve his goals. His decision to test Bryony rather than simply have her killed reveals a respect for Scillarian laws and traditions, as well as a strategic mind that sees value in proving her worthiness as a future queen. His interactions with Zephyr and his memories of his sister hint at a buried capacity for affection, suggesting that his cruelty is, in part, a shield forged from centuries of loss and the solitary burden of his duty.

Theodora Devaliant

Theodora “Theo” Devaliant is Bryony’s older sister and initially a foil to her. Where Bryony is quiet and dutiful at the start of the novel, Theo is cynical, sharp-tongued, and sexually liberated. Theo’s hard exterior, however, conceals the same trauma that her sister endures. Theo’s coping mechanisms for the repeated ritual deaths are defiance and a search for physical sensation, using sex with her guard, Kas, to feel alive after the numbing emptiness of the Void. Her confession to Bryony reveals her deep-seated fear and psychological distress, showing that her “ice princess” persona is a form of armor.

Politically astute, Theo is also a capable leader who held the empire together during her uncle’s absence. She is unafraid to challenge authority, whether it be her uncle Idris or the gods themselves. Her attempt to overthrow Idris demonstrates her proactive nature and her loyalty to her people and her sister. She shows a different path of survival for a Devaliant woman, one that relies on seizing power rather than lasting sacrifice. Her love for Bryony is her primary motivation, driving her to risk her own safety and political standing to protect her.

Bastien (The Blade)

Bastien, “the Blade,” is Evander’s brother and a fellow Enforcer for Alexios. He is a secondary antagonist and a bleak mirror to his brother. His character is defined almost entirely by the trauma he suffered during the war, when his wings were brutally sawn off by humans. This event has left him cold, ruthless, and filled with an unquenchable hatred for the Devaliant line. While Evander kills offending humans with precision, Bastien is known for butchering them indiscriminately. Bastien’s torture at the hand of humans have left him deeply averse to being touched, and unlike Evander, he eschews sex.

Bastien’s shadow wings are a constant, physical symbol of this mutilation and his altered nature. He is even more merciless than Evander, viewing any hint of softness or sentiment as a betrayal of their shared vow of vengeance. His rage during Aethertide manifests not as lust but as a cold, mathematical need for destruction. Despite his cruelty, his actions are rooted in a twisted, protective loyalty to Evander. He helps Bryony secure her bond with his brother because he believes it is the most efficient way to manage Evander’s “idiocy” and prevent him from suffering further loss. Bastien is also hinted to show a reluctant interest in Bryony’s sister Theo, foreshadowing new developments for his character in potential sequels.

Idris Devaliant

Idris Devaliant, Bryony’s uncle and the Emperor of Luceni, is an antagonist in the novel. He is a flat and static character who embodies the decay of the Devaliant line and the moral failings of leadership. Drowning in grief after his daughter’s death by suicide, he abandons his duties for hedonism, leaving his niece Theodora to rule in his stead, but without enjoying the benefits of a royal title. His leadership style is neglectful and abusive, and his actions are driven by cowardice and self-preservation. He views his family members, including Bryony, as tools to be used and discarded. His murder of Bryony on the Duehavn is the ultimate expression of his moral corruption, a selfish act performed to curry favor with Alexios. He shows a mortal parallel to Alexios, showing how personal pain can lead a ruler to abdicate responsibility and inflict suffering on others.

Amara

Amara is a key minor character who is a rescuer and mentor to Bryony. A powerful demigoddess with a mysterious past, she is cynical, pragmatic, and fiercely independent. It is her intervention that saves Bryony’s life on the Duehavn Ridge, and she becomes Bryony’s combat trainer, teaching her how to channel her rage into fighting skills. Her brutal training methods are instrumental in Bryony’s transformation, embodying the theme of Reclaiming Agency with Violence. Her secret soulbond with the Dark King, Severin, hints at a deep vulnerability and a painful history that she keeps guarded, explaining her empathy for Bryony’s plight and her complicated relationship with the politics of the realms.

Severin (The Dark King)

Severin, the Dark King and Eternal of Nyholm, appears briefly but serves an important role in expanding the world of Scillari. He is presented as a figure of immense and terrifying power, a death god who animates corpses for his own amusement and rules a desolate territory. The stories told about him in Vartena establish him as a legendary threat. However, his interaction with Bryony reveals a more complex character. His decision to spare Bryony is driven by his hidden soulbond with Amara, revealing a capacity for mercy and a vulnerability that contradicts his fearsome reputation. He is a powerful political player whose motivations are intertwined with personal history and loss.
