They Stole Our Hearts

Four sentient Furrington Teddies, small stuffed bears created by Furrington Industries, have survived being discarded in a junkyard and now live hidden under the bed of a young girl named Darling. Buddy, the blue teddy and the group's leader, shares a cardboard box with three friends: Sunny, an action-oriented yellow teddy; Reginald, a calm and wise gray teddy; and Sugar, an optimistic pink teddy whose body is badly damaged. Darling's father, Daddy, told her to keep the teddies secret from her mother, Mama. For 77 "Paws," the teddies' timekeeping system of daily pawmarks scratched in dust, they have waited for Forever Sleep, a blissful state all Furrington Teddies believe arrives when a child hugs them. Forever Sleep has never come, and Buddy secretly wonders if the concept was always a lie.

On weekends, Darling plays tea parties with the teddies but always sets out an extra teacup for Roo, a stuffed kangaroo she lost years earlier. Buddy worries Darling will never love the teddies as deeply and launches "Operation Replace Roo," positioning them around the room to attract her attention. The campaign mostly fails. Meanwhile, Reginald deduces that Mama works two jobs, explaining her exhaustion. Buddy overhears Mama tell Darling that Daddy must "make himself better" before he can live with them again.

Sunny argues the teddies should climb into Darling's bed at night, pointing to the image on every Furrington box showing a child holding a single blue teddy. This sparks a painful realization: One child can truly bond with only one teddy. The group agrees that one should stay with Darling while the rest leave. Buddy proposes a drawing but privately writes "Sugar" on all four slips, ensuring she wins. Reginald discovers the trick and quietly approves.

On the morning of 87 Paws, the departing teddies say goodbye to Sugar, who makes them promise never to give up. Before they can escape through an open window, Mama bursts in and finds them. Recognizing them as Furrington Teddies, she calls them monsters. Daddy arrives for a scheduled visit, and Mama orders him to bag the teddies and throw them away. Then Mama discovers Sugar and drops her into the garbage disposal, which destroys her as Darling and the teddies scream. Daddy carries the bagged teddies out of the apartment.

In a recurring black void, Buddy speaks again with the Voice, a mysterious entity that has visited him before with cryptic guidance and now warns that more loved ones will leave his life. Buddy resolves to stop seeking children directly and instead find the Suit, the owner of Furrington Industries, to demand the truth about what is wrong with Furrington Teddies.

Buddy wakes in a dumpster with Sunny and Reginald. Traveling by night, Sunny finds an advertisement listing the factory's address: 323 Genesis Way. After Buddy discovers a dead Furrington wedged between fence posts, Reginald spots a Genesis Way sign. A rainstorm sweeps all three into a storm drain, and they emerge through sewer pipes into an abandoned basement bathroom. Beyond the door, they encounter three Furrington Teddies who call themselves the Cherubim. Armed with sharpened forks, wearing chain belts, and lacking name tags, the Cherubim guard the cellar and have never heard of the outside world.

The Cherubim lead them into the cellar's main room, where they discover a hidden village of more than 50 Furrington Teddies, all wearing chain belts and lacking name tags. The village follows a leader called the Forgiver, who teaches that teddies do not deserve names. The teddies are preparing for Choosing Day, an upcoming ceremony whose purpose remains unclear. A white teddy with a manufacturing defect tells Buddy about the event; Buddy privately nicknames her Nothing. When the three friends hug the cellar teddies, not one hugs back.

The Cherubim assign Buddy to the Uriel, nearly furless teddies who spread the Forgiver's teachings, and Sunny to combat training. Reginald voluntarily joins the work crew and quickly adopts the cellar's beliefs. The three friends are kept on opposing schedules to prevent contact. When Buddy asks about a staircase at the far end of the cellar, he is violently attacked; discussion of "the Upstairs" is forbidden.

Choosing Day arrives. The Forgiver, a gaunt, nearly furless teddy, ascends a makeshift tower and leads a chant in which the teddies declare themselves worthless. At the Forgiver's command, every teddy whips their own back with their chain belt, called a Pain Chain, tearing off strips of plush. Buddy refuses. The Forgiver selects a teddy as the chosen one, and the Cherubim escort the teddy away. Buddy learns that chosen teddies are taken to a place called the Cave of Hearts and never return.

Buddy and Sunny manage a secret meeting and agree the Upstairs is their only escape. Buddy deepens his friendship with Nothing, who agrees to join them. But when Buddy confronts Reginald, the gray teddy refuses to leave, calls Buddy "blue teddy," and reveals his name tag has been torn off.

The Forgiver summons Buddy and reveals the Cave of Hearts: a dark enclosure containing dunes of stuffing from nine destroyed teddies. The Forgiver has been killing chosen teddies, peeling them open to "release" their Real Silk Hearts, the special inner hearts advertised on every Furrington box. Buddy realizes the Suit never placed Real Silk Hearts inside the teddies; the promise was a lie. The Forgiver also claims Furrington Teddies are "born poison" because their Ryulexster, the cheap synthetic fabric used in mass production, is toxic to children. Despite this, Buddy insists teddies carry real hearts through love. The Forgiver announces a second Choosing Day and selects Reginald, a deliberate move to punish Buddy and Sunny.

At the ceremony, Nothing fashions a slingshot from her paper clip, rubber band, and coins and shatters the cellar windows. Stormwater floods in, throwing the village into chaos. Sunny fights the Cherubim while Buddy races to the Cave of Hearts, where the Forgiver has taken Reginald. Buddy argues that teddies are defined by love, not materials. Reginald snaps out of his trance and reclaims his identity. The Forgiver, moved for the first time, urges them to hurry to the Upstairs.

Buddy, Sunny, Reginald, and Nothing climb the stairs as the cellar teddies silently part. Below, the flood forces village teddies to solve problems independently, an early sign of individual identity. At the top, they push open a door and enter Furrington Industries: a single enormous room with dormant machines and dusty sewing tables. The factory is completely abandoned. In the lobby, the teddies find police tape, the boarded-up entrance at 323 Genesis Way, and hundreds of unattached name tags, the names never given to the cellar teddies.

Buddy, boosted by Sunny and Reginald, cleans dust from a glass case on the lobby wall. Inside, labeled "Original Teddy Prototype," is a blue teddy made of the Softest Fabric in the World. The teddy's arm begins to move. Proto, the legendary first Furrington Teddy created by the Mother, the original teddy maker, is alive. Proto smiles and says he has been waiting for someone to come, asking them to break open the case and promising he has much to tell them. The story, the second book in the Teddies Saga, ends on this cliffhanger.
