Myron Bolitar is a sports agent and attorney whose promising basketball career ended with a devastating injury. Operating out of a penthouse office in Manhattan's Lock-Horne Building, owned by the family of his best friend and business partner Windsor Horne Lockwood III (known as Win), Myron is rebuilding his agency when agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrive with a startling question: Where is Greg Downing?

Greg, Myron's lifelong basketball rival, has supposedly been dead for three years. Their entangled history runs deep: Emily Downing, Myron's college girlfriend, left him to marry Greg, and on the night before that wedding, she and Myron conceived a son, Jeremy, whom Greg raised as his own. Despite years of betrayal, Myron became Greg's agent, and the two forged an uneasy truce. Five years ago, Greg quit coaching and disappeared overseas. Two years later, word came that he had died of a heart attack and been cremated.

Now Special Agent Monica Hawes reveals that Greg's DNA was found under the fingernails of murder victim Cecelia Callister, killed alongside her son Clay. Win privately acknowledges that Greg's financial moves before his departure, including offshore accounts and asset transfers, suggest the death was staged. Since Greg never terminated their professional relationship, Myron and Win feel obligated to find him.

Emily reveals that her remarriage to Greg was a financial arrangement and shows Myron a secret Instagram account through which Greg exchanged intimate messages with Bo Storm, a young Las Vegas fitness model who vanished five years ago. Esperanza Diaz, Myron's former partner now working at the FFD law firm, discovers that Bo's real name is Brian Konners, the younger brother of Greg's former assistant coach Spark Konners. She also finds that Bo's boyfriend, Jordan Kravat, was murdered five years ago, and mob boss Joseph "Joey the Toe" Turant was convicted of the killing.

In Las Vegas, Jordan's mother Donna Kravat provides information but secretly tips off Turant's associates, who abduct Myron. Win tracks him through a secondary locator and kills three captors. Win then visits Joey in prison, where Joey insists he was framed. Donna later reveals her own theory: She believes too much evidence was left behind for a seasoned mob boss and suspects Bo may have been involved in Jordan's death.

Win lures Spark to Las Vegas under false pretenses, takes his phone, and traces a call to Havre, Montana. Myron finds Bo there, working under an assumed name. Bo explains that his mother Grace ran his social media and that Grace, not Bo, had been messaging with Greg. Greg and Grace met at a basketball game and fell in love. Bo claims Greg was diagnosed with cancer and genuinely died, but Myron senses deception.

Using phone data and hidden bank accounts, Myron tracks Grace to Pine Bush, New York, where Greg reveals himself, alive. Greg explains that he and Grace fell in love, helped Bo escape Jordan's abuse, and faked Greg's death to avoid mob retaliation. He denies any connection to the Callister murders. Before Myron can press further, FBI agents arrest Greg.

Greg is denied bail and refuses Myron's help. Myron's high-level FBI contact, known only as PT, reveals that the Bureau suspects a serial killer who murders victims and then plants overwhelming forensic evidence to frame someone else, ensuring each case is quickly closed. PT identifies at least seven connected murders across the country. The only link between any of the cases is Greg Downing.

The investigation turns dangerous when Turant's associates threaten Myron's elderly father in Florida, pistol-whipping him to force Myron to reveal Bo's location. Win gives up Bo's whereabouts to protect Myron's parents. Turant's men seize Bo but keep him alive because they need him to voluntarily recant his testimony against Joey.

Attorney Sadie Fisher takes over Greg's defense and holds a press conference with Bo at her side, publicly revealing the serial killer's existence and accusing the FBI of keeping innocent people in prison. Greg is released. Myron and his wife, journalist Terese Collins, review the murder of real estate mogul Ronald Prine, which fits the same pattern: Prine was killed with a hunting rifle belonging to contractor Jackie Newton's father, returned to Jackie's closet, with threatening emails sent from Jackie's IP address.

Emily discovers a burner phone taped under Jeremy's bed containing calls to the Prine Organization in Philadelphia, where Prine was murdered. Win's investigation reveals that no one at the basketball courts in Wallkill remembers Greg playing there, undermining Greg's claim that his DNA was innocently collected during a rough pickup game.

Esperanza traces a credit card from Greg and Grace's hidden account to a car rental near Philadelphia, timed to the Prine murder. As Myron crosses Central Park, he receives surveillance footage on his phone and recognizes Grace Konners. Grace shoots him twice, hitting his neck and back. Myron collapses near the Strawberry Fields memorial. Jeremy, who had been with Win at the nearby Dakota apartment building, runs toward the gunfire and dives for Grace's gun, covering the muzzle with his hand. Grace fires, destroying two of Jeremy's fingers. Greg, who had followed Myron from Emily's apartment, sees Grace turn the gun on Jeremy and shoots her dead.

Win takes over the narration. Myron dies twice, in the ambulance and during surgery, before stabilizing. Terese rarely leaves his bedside during recovery. The FBI's unofficial official conclusion is that Grace was a rare female serial killer responsible for at least six murders. Her first kill was Jordan Kravat, motivated by protecting Bo from abuse, and the experience transformed her into a serial killer who repeated the pattern of murdering and framing an innocent party. When Greg's DNA surfaced at the Callister scene, Grace anonymously tipped the FBI about the serial killer pattern and killed Prine while Greg was in custody to demonstrate his innocence. Her plan to frame Jeremy with the burner phone was a rogue escalation Greg would not have sanctioned.

Six weeks later, Myron travels with Win and Terese to Marrakech, where Win has tracked Greg to a hotel under a false identity. Greg confesses that he and Grace were partners in the killings. Their murder of Jordan Kravat ignited something in both of them: Grace craved the act of killing, while Greg found his thrill in the intellectual challenge of framing innocents. They killed far more people than the FBI knows. Greg admits the Callister murder was an escalation, and that Clay walked in unexpectedly. He insists his capacity for violence died with Grace, then runs toward the hotel window and crashes through the glass, falling to his death.

Win narrates the final scene. He, Terese, and Myron fly to Florida, where Myron's father greets him at the elevator, cupping the back of his head as he did at Myron's bar mitzvah decades earlier. The family gathers, and Myron's mother reveals a surprise: Jeremy steps into view. Myron's face crumbles as his son runs toward him. Win, the perpetually composed observer, admits for the first time to wiping tears from his own eyes.
