Unsouled is the first volume in the Cradle series.

In Sacred Valley, rival clans practice the sacred arts, a system of spiritual cultivation powered by madra, the raw energy of the soul. Twice a year, children place a hand in a bowl of purified madra; the liquid's response determines one of four badges, each tied to a combat discipline. At seven, Wei Shi Lindon hopes for a Forger's hammer badge so he can follow his mother, Wei Shi Seisha, a Soulsmith who crafts items from madra and Remnants, ghost-like spirits of pure madra. The liquid does not respond. The First Elder declares him "Unsouled" and gives him a badge meaning "empty." By fifteen, Lindon has tested seventeen times. The water has never moved.

Lindon searches the forest for an ancestral orus tree, one that has absorbed ambient spiritual energy for centuries and is about to produce a powerful spirit-fruit. He finds one, but Wei Mon Teris, a younger clansman at the Copper advancement rank, destroys it in anger, releasing a Remnant, a ghost-like spirit of pure madra. Teris flees. Lindon traps the Remnant with a scripted circle and snatches the spirit-fruit, breaking his arm.

His family debates who should receive the fruit. His father, Wei Shi Jaran, argues it should go to Lindon's older sister, Wei Shi Kelsa, who needs it for the Seven-Year Festival, a competition between the clans. Lindon insists he earned a share, and Kelsa splits it with him.

The First Elder punishes Teris for cowardice and privately tells Lindon his life has no value to the clan. To shield Lindon from the Mon family's retaliation, he sends Lindon to feed Elder Whisper, an ancient five-tailed sacred fox who co-founded the Wei clan. Whisper offers cryptic encouragement: the sacred arts have no true endpoint, and when a traveler cannot find a path, he must make his own.

Wei Mon Keth, Teris's father and head of the Mon family, orchestrates a public challenge against Lindon from Keth's ten-year-old daughter. Lindon accepts and spends the week preparing. In the clan archive, he discovers Heart of Twin Stars, a manual describing how to split one's core in two as a counter to the Empty Palm, a technique that injects pure madra into an opponent's core to disable their spirit. Kelsa helps Lindon reverse-engineer the Empty Palm, and they discover the orus fruit has nearly doubled his madra capacity.

On the day of the duel, Lindon challenges not the girl but Keth, a warrior at the Iron rank, two stages above Copper. He proposes one strike each; the first to lose footing loses. Keth agrees and leaves himself undefended. Lindon lands an Empty Palm on Keth's core, then punches while Keth's spirit is disrupted. Keth staggers, and Lindon immediately concedes before Keth can retaliate. The First Elder subdues Keth, and Lindon leverages his notoriety into a deal: if he wins the Foundation tournament, the Festival's lowest division, and performs well against a Copper, he will receive a Path manual.

A separate thread introduces Suriel, the Phoenix, one of seven Judges in the Abidan Court, a cosmic organization maintaining order across countless worlds. She arrives at Cradle, the world containing Sacred Valley. Ozriel, the Reaper, another Judge, has abandoned his role destroying condemned worlds, and the resulting corruption threatens trillions of lives.

The Festival begins. Lindon sweeps the Foundation tournament using the Empty Palm. He has also sealed hornet Remnants in a scripted jar and buried it beneath the arena. Elder Whitehall of the Heaven's Glory School, a Jade-rank elder (a rank above Iron) trapped in a child's body by a botched longevity elixir, announces Lindon will face the Patriarch's Iron-rank grandson, Wei Jin Amon. Before the fight, Li Markuth, an ancestor of the Li clan, descends from the sky on black-and-white wings, summoned by a secret ritual. Markuth has reached Gold, a rank far beyond Sacred Valley's norm. He kills the Wei Patriarch and displays severed heads, including Seisha's. Lindon lands a desperate Empty Palm on Markuth; it has no effect. Markuth kills him.

Suriel intervenes, freezing time and dragging Markuth into a void. She restores Lindon to life and reverses all damage. She offers to erase his memory, but he asks to remember. She shows him his dominant fate: a life ending when a Dreadgod, a catastrophic creature, destroys Sacred Valley decades hence. She shows him sacred artists of staggering power beyond the valley and tells him he must reach Gold, the minimum threshold for a real sacred artist. She reveals Yerin, disciple of the late Sword Sage on the Path of the Endless Sword, cornered on Mount Samara and able to guide him out. She gives him a glass marble with a blue flame as her token and restores time.

Lindon refuses to withdraw from the exhibition. He bargains with Whitehall: if he defeats Amon, he wants discipleship at the Heaven's Glory School on Mount Samara. He releases the hornet Remnants, overwhelms Amon, and wins. Whitehall honors the deal, and Lindon departs his family.

At the school, Lindon cons his way past a lethal initiation trial, selects White Fox boundary banners from the Lesser Treasure Hall, and locates Yerin on the mountain. They swear oaths: She will guide him out of the valley in exchange for his help against Heaven's Glory. Yerin refuses to leave until she harvests her dead master's Remnant from the Ancestor's Tomb, where the school locked it after killing the Sword Sage in his sleep.

They rob the Treasure Hall. Yerin battles Elder Rahm, the Heaven's Glory elder who oversees the hall, and his constructs while Lindon loads treasures onto the Thousand-Mile Cloud, a flying construct: spirit-seals for binding Remnants, the Starlotus bud that can advance him to Copper, and a halfsilver dagger made from madra-disrupting metal. They fly to the Tomb, where the Sword Sage's Remnant, a figure of liquid silver with six blade-limbs, attacks immediately. Whitehall, who has been hiding nearby, corners Lindon inside the Tomb and strikes to destroy his core, but Lindon activates the Heart of Twin Stars technique, splitting his core in two. The twin cores shift apart; Whitehall's attack misses both. Lindon tackles the child-sized elder through a hole in the wall. Whitehall plummets to his death; Lindon catches himself on the cloud.

Yerin absorbs her master's Remnant and advances to Gold. Lindon eats half the Starlotus bud, directing its energy into one of his two cores to confirm they can hold different types of madra. They collapse part of the Tomb and flee over the far side of Mount Samara. During the descent, Yerin reveals that the spirit test does not determine what a person is, only what they are best at. Outside the valley, no one is considered a sacred artist until learning the basics of all four disciplines and harvesting a Remnant. Lindon was never deficient; he was two steps behind. He opens the blank pages of Heart of Twin Stars and writes: "The Path of Twin Stars."

The epilogue establishes that the Transcendent Ruin has risen outside the valley, drawing powerful creatures. Elder Whisper hopes these children might save the valley. Suriel accepts the mission to find Ozriel, and her Presence, an AI-like construct, reports Lindon's odds: a 17 percent chance of surviving the surrounding wilderness, 4 percent of surpassing Gold, and 0.3 percent of ascending beyond Cradle.
