This dark romance novel is the first book of a trilogy. The story ends on a major cliffhanger.
The novel opens with two scenes of death. In the prologue, an unnamed woman stands in a dark forest with blood on her hands, believing she has killed someone. She references the doppelgänger myth: When two identical people meet, the first to see the other is fated to die. A man pursues her to a cliff's edge, accuses her of ending a life, and releases her hand, letting her fall into darkness. In the first chapter, a man named Adrian cradles a dying woman with dark brown hair, whispers that he will find her again, and reflects that death is only a beginning.
The narrative shifts to Winter Cavanaugh, a 27-year-old homeless woman with an alcohol addiction surviving on the freezing streets of New York City. She pauses before a poster advertising the ballet
Giselle and feels an inexplicable rage toward it. Crossing the street, she nearly walks into the path of a van, and a tall Russian stranger with intense gray eyes pulls her to safety. Her inner monologue reveals that she once had a baby daughter whose memory drives her will to survive.
Winter returns to her homeless shelter to find police outside. Her friend Larry, a middle-aged veteran, tells her that the shelter's director, Richard Green, a mayoral candidate, has been found dead. Winter is the prime suspect because she was the last person seen with Richard; she had fought him off after he groped her. Strangely, the media has not released her name or photo. That night, Winter hides in a parking garage, but the stranger's men find her and force her into a car.
The stranger is Adrian Volkov, a high-ranking member of the
Bratva, the Russian mafia. He explains that his wife, Lia Volkov, recently died, and Winter is her doppelgänger, identical down to their rare turquoise eye color. When Winter refuses to impersonate Lia, Adrian reveals he suppressed her identity from the police regarding Richard's murder. Her options are to comply or face prison. He declares her new identity: She is now Lia Volkov. Staff dye her hair dark brown and dress her to match Lia's appearance.
Adrian's perspective reveals his motivations. He recalls Lia explaining the doppelgänger myth and hoping her double existed somewhere. Adrian now blames Winter for Lia's death, believing the myth came true, and frames the impersonation as punishment. His inner circle includes Kolya, his loyal senior guard, and Yan, a younger guard he and Kolya raised from childhood. Yan openly condemns the plan. Adrian holds the rank of
Obshchak, a senior overseer within the Bratva, answering only to the
Pakhan, or supreme leader, Sergei Sokolov. Through Kirill Morozov, a brigadier, or captain, Adrian learns that Sergei has assigned his own advisor to investigate Richard's murder, suggesting Adrian himself is under suspicion.
At Adrian's estate, his five-year-old son, Jeremy, sees Winter and whispers "Mommy...?" The boy triggers memories of Winter's lost daughter, and she collapses and faints. Adrian carries her upstairs and tends to her. Winter's first night brings a vivid nightmare of Adrian having sex with her against her will. She wakes having been touching herself in her sleep and finds physical marks from the dream. She accuses Adrian of assaulting her; he denies it, and she reluctantly accepts it was a nightmare but remains deeply disturbed.
Adrian's control intensifies. He forbids Winter from entering the guest house on the estate grounds. When she talks back, he punishes her physically, and to her horror, she becomes aroused. He tallies every act of defiance and offers a nightly choice: let him hear her unrestrained voice during sex, or accept the belt. She refuses to surrender her voice, the last piece of herself she controls, and endures punishment after punishment. Afterward, he applies ointment and tucks her in. Meanwhile, Winter bonds deeply with Jeremy, filling the void left by her daughter. Jeremy mentions that his real mother sometimes appeared as a frightening "ghost" near the forbidden guest house. Winter must also memorize a Bratva hierarchy document before public appearances, since staff have been told Lia lost her memories.
Sergei orders Adrian to bring Lia to a birthday party for Igor, a Bratva elder, forcing Adrian to accelerate Winter's preparation. Winter negotiates a reward system: Good behavior earns one request per week, her first act of leverage. In his office, she demands he use her real name and recounts the life she believes is hers: her father's early death, her talent for ballet, her mother's death, and her daughter's birth and death. Adrian shows no sympathy and continues calling her Lia. While playing in the garden, Winter glances at the guest house and sees a pale figure with her exact face staring down from a window. Her nightmares escalate: In one, a shadow figure forces her to pull a trigger aimed at Adrian. She wakes foaming at the mouth and choking. Adrian cannot rouse her by calling "Lia," but she gasps awake the instant he says "Winter." She begs him to use her real name. He refuses.
At Igor's birthday party, Winter mingles with the Bratva elite. Damien, a younger brigadier, and Kirill both remark on her changed behavior, nearly exposing the deception. Rai Sokolov, the Pakhan's grandniece, reveals that Lia had previously asked Rai for help escaping Adrian. On a balcony, Winter's phone vibrates with a text from an unknown number: "You have one mission. Pull the fucking trigger."
As Yan escorts Winter to the car, masked men ambush them, shooting Yan twice in the shoulder. The driver kills his partner, addresses Winter as "Duchess," tells her she has a mission, and dumps her and the unconscious Yan in a remote location. Winter carries Yan through the darkness until she finds a road, where Adrian locates them. Winter conceals the shadow's demands when recounting the ordeal. Overcome with relief, Adrian and Winter have sex for the first time. He tells her she is "fucking home." She lets her guard down and moans his name freely. In the afterglow, he whispers that he missed her, calling her Lia. Winter concludes that his tenderness was never meant for her and cries silently.
Adrian investigates the kidnapping, and tensions mount within his inner circle. Kolya defends Yan and tells Adrian he is becoming a replica of his own hated parents. Adrian restricts Winter's visits to the guest house, but Yan, still recovering, tells her to go to the second floor while Kolya is briefly away. There she finds a woman lying in a bed connected to medical equipment, eyes open but blank and unresponsive: a woman with her face. The real Lia Volkov appears to be alive. Winter receives a text from the shadow: "You became Lia Volkov for a reason. Find it."
Devastated by the discovery that she has been sleeping with the husband of a living woman, Winter resolves to leave. She strategically allows Adrian to hear her voice during sex, appears compliant, and earns a reward: an outing to a public park with Jeremy. There, the shadow separates her from the guards, removes his mask, and reveals the face from her nightmares. He tells her the nightmare was actually a memory and that she helped him attempt to assassinate Adrian a year earlier. A flashback strikes: Winter stands in a church in a wedding dress, saying "I do" to Adrian, while plotting how to end his life. She recognizes the man as Luca, her partner in the assassination attempt. Her name is Lia Volkov, and it always has been. The novel ends on this cliffhanger.
