The fourth and final installment in the
Red Queen series is set in a world where silver-blooded people possess supernatural abilities and rule over ordinary red-blooded humans. Mare Barrow, a Red who discovered she has electrical abilities as a newblood (a Red born with Silver-like powers), has spent the previous books fighting alongside the Scarlet Guard, a Red rebel organization, and the Free Republic of Montfort, a democratic nation where Reds, Silvers, and newbloods live as equals. The story opens after the battle of Corvium, where Mare's coalition defeated forces loyal to Maven Calore, the manipulative young king of Norta who imprisoned and tortured Mare. Maven's older brother, Tiberias Calore, known as Cal, fought alongside the coalition but has just accepted a crown and a betrothal to Evangeline Samos, daughter of Volo Samos, king of the breakaway Kingdom of the Rift, rather than reject monarchy as Mare demands.
Mare resolves to support the Scarlet Guard's long-term strategy: help Cal defeat Maven first, then dismantle Cal's monarchy. Premier Davidson of Montfort and General Diana Farley of the Scarlet Guard privately confirm they will never allow another Silver king to rule. Evangeline chafes at being forced to marry Cal, secretly loving Elane Haven, a noblewoman married to Evangeline's brother Ptolemus in a sham arrangement. Evangeline approaches Mare with an unexpected proposal: Both want Cal to fail in claiming the throne, and they agree to work toward that goal from different angles.
Davidson must return to Montfort to petition his elected government for troops. Mare volunteers to accompany him, and Evangeline manipulates the council into sending Cal as well. On a parallel track, Iris Cygnet, Maven's queen and a princess of the Lakelands, mourns her father, King Orrec, who was killed by the lord Salin Iral under Volo Samos's orders. With her mother, Queen Cenra, and sister Tiora, Iris conspires to preserve Lakelander strength while letting the Calore brothers destroy each other, positioning the Lakelands to conquer Norta afterward.
The coalition destroys Corvium and travels to Montfort's mountain capital, Ascendant. Davidson privately reveals to Evangeline that he is married to Carmadon, a Silver greenwarden with the ability to grow and control plant life, and that same-sex marriage is accepted in Montfort. The revelation shakes Evangeline, showing her a life she believed impossible. Davidson addresses the People's Gallery, Montfort's elected assembly, alongside Mare, Cal, and Farley. Cal kneels before the representatives and asks them to fight alongside him. The Gallery votes overwhelmingly to provide an army.
Meanwhile, Iris leads a covert team into Montfort to rescue the captive children of Prince Bracken of Piedmont from behind Silent Stone, a material that suppresses Silver and newblood abilities. The team escapes with the children, leaving behind drugged Red decoys reshaped by a skin healer. By rescuing the children personally, Iris secures Bracken's loyalty for the Lakelands.
The coalition returns to Ridge House, its headquarters in the Rift, where word arrives that Bracken has retaken the Piedmont base with Maven's support, flipping Piedmont's alliance and severing the coalition's southern foothold. Mare communicates with Maven through a Montfort newblood whose triplet brothers share telepathic abilities. Farley bluffs Maven by claiming the Guard planted explosives at the base, and Maven agrees to release prisoners in exchange for the bomb locations.
Cal proposes attacking Harbor Bay for its military resources; Mare argues for simultaneously liberating New Town, a Red tech slum, to cripple Maven's manufacturing. Evangeline quietly schemes to push Cal and Mare back together, hoping renewed closeness will make Cal reconsider the crown. Cal reveals he searched for newblood whispers, people with mind-based abilities who might undo the psychological damage Maven's mother inflicted on Maven, but none exist.
Maven sends Iris to lead Harbor Bay's defense, compelling Queen Cenra to dispatch the Lakelander fleet. Mare leads a strike team into New Town through smuggling tunnels, coordinating with Cameron Cole, a newblood silencer who can suppress others' abilities, and the slum's internal resistance. Electricons, people who control electricity, generate storm lightning as the attack signal while the Scarlet Guard detonates explosives at key installations. Kilorn, Mare's oldest friend, is nearly killed but a healer saves him. New Town falls.
At Harbor Bay, Iris floods Fort Patriot by unleashing the ocean against the seawall, devastating the Samos naval forces. Cal confronts Iris on a battleship but she overwhelms him with a massive wave; healers revive him on shore. The coalition wins the city when Iris retreats. Cal's brush with death breaks the resolve both he and Mare maintained, and they spend the night together, acknowledging that nothing has changed politically.
A parlay with Maven is arranged on Province Island, within a circle of Silent Stone. Maven refuses all terms. As the meeting ends, the Lakelander queens seize Maven in a prearranged trade secretly orchestrated by Cal's grandmother, Anabel Lerolan, and his uncle, Julian Jacos. In exchange, they surrender Salin Iral, the lord who killed Iris's father. Cenra and Iris drown Iral on the spot. Maven is transferred to the coalition.
Cal convenes a council to sentence Maven; all factions recommend execution, but Mare refuses Maven's request that she kill him. Cal is crowned king in Archeon, Norta's capital, though many Silver houses are absent. Julian gifts Cal a copy of his late mother Coriane's diary, which Cal struggles to bring himself to read. Davidson, Farley, and Mare present Cal with an ultimatum: abdicate and allow Norta to become a democracy, or lose their alliance. Cal refuses, citing the imminent Lakelander threat. The Red alliance withdraws, though Cal concedes fair wages, freedom of movement, and an end to conscription for Reds. Davidson's teleporter then secretly removes Maven from custody, spiriting him to Montfort.
Davidson offers Evangeline and Elane refuge in Montfort. Evangeline suspects Anabel's deal also includes delivering Volo, whose orders led to King Orrec's death, but she stays silent. When the Lakelander armada invades Archeon, Evangeline attempts to flee but is stopped by her father and her mother's wolf. Ptolemus attacks Volo to free her; Julian, a singer who can compel obedience through voice, commands their mother, Larentia, to flee and forget her children. Evangeline, Ptolemus, and Wren Skonos, a skin healer in Ptolemus's service, escape on an underground train.
The Scarlet Guard and Montfort forces emerge from tunnels beneath Archeon, guided by Maven, who bargained his knowledge of the city's passages for the chance to lead the army in. Maven escapes during the battle. The Archeon Bridge collapses with Cal and Mare on it; Montfort teleporters save them. Volo walks off the crumbling Bridge and crashes onto a Lakelander battleship, fulfilling Anabel's trade. Montfort deploys underwater explosive boats that devastate the armada. Cenra orders retreat, choosing her daughter's life over conquest.
Maven, trapped in Whitefire Palace, retreats to a room lined with Silent Stone. Mare tracks him there and enters despite her trauma, stripped of her lightning. They fight hand-to-hand; Maven nearly strangles her to death, but she frees her arm and kills him with a blade. Sara Skonos, a skin healer allied with Cal's coalition, saves Mare's life.
In the aftermath, Cal abdicates, influenced by his mother Coriane's diary, which expressed her wish that her son would not be another warrior king. Norta begins its transformation into a democracy. Evangeline and Elane live freely in Montfort. A cease-fire holds with the Lakelands, though the Lakelander queens continue planning future conquests. Mare recovers with her family in Montfort. She and Cal part ways; she asked for time and space and did not ask him to wait. Visiting a valley with her sister Gisa, Mare reflects on bison nearly hunted to extinction that returned because people changed course. She wears a new red earring for Cal alongside the ones for her brothers and Kilorn, resolving to return to him eventually, but first she must discover who she is beyond the war.
