Ava is a young Black woman who recently sold her successful Atlanta hair salon and returned to her hometown of Idlewild, Michigan. Following a positive HIV test, she attempts to process the diagnosis and manage the cultural stigmas attached to it. Though initially intending to stay only briefly before moving to California, her interactions with family and the local community gradually shift her perspective on her future.

Joyce is Ava's older sister and a former social worker who devotes her time to helping others in Idlewild. Having lost her husband and two children in tragic accidents, she channels her energy into community service. She leads an empowerment group called the Sewing Circus and believes people fundamentally want to care for themselves if given the proper support.

Eddie is an old friend of Joyce's late husband who returned to Idlewild after serving in the Vietnam War and spending ten years in prison. Now a soft-spoken man who practices t'ai chi and cultivates tomatoes, Eddie has changed significantly since his troubled youth. He grounds Ava in the present moment and encourages her to forgive herself.

Imani is a newborn baby left behind by a mother struggling with drug addiction. Named the Swahili word for "faith" by Joyce, the infant quickly becomes the focal point of the Mitchell household. Her presence gives the adults a tangible reason to plan for the future.

Gerry is the strict, image-conscious wife of Reverend Jonathan Anderson. She aggressively protects her family's social standing and frequently attacks those she deems sinful or inappropriate. She uses her authority in the church to undermine Joyce's community efforts and spread rumors about Ava's health.

The newly appointed pastor at New Light Baptist Church, recently relocated from Chicago. He relies completely on his wife to manage his public image and schedule, often failing to attend meetings himself. He publicly supports conservative, abstinence-based teachings.

Frank is Eartha and Mattie's brother and Imani's uncle. He struggles with a severe drug addiction and exhibits erratic, violent behavior. Alongside his friend Tyrone, he routinely creates disturbances and poses a physical threat to the Idlewild community.

Gerry and Reverend Anderson's troubled grandson. He spends his time using drugs and acting out alongside his friend Frank, frequently using bigoted language to harass community members while his grandparents turn a blind eye to his behavior.

A bright young member of the Sewing Circus. She is preparing to attend the prestigious Interlochen boarding school, representing the tangible success of Joyce's efforts to help young women build promising futures away from Idlewild.

A young woman struggling with a severe crack cocaine addiction and an HIV diagnosis. Overwhelmed by her circumstances, she flees the hospital shortly after giving birth to Imani, leaving the baby in Joyce's care.

Sister to Eartha and Frank. She shares her siblings' struggles with substance abuse and is initially indifferent to the fate of her newborn niece, Imani, before realizing that fostering comes with financial compensation.

An elderly resident of Idlewild who is attacked and robbed in his sleep. Distraught by the violence, he decides to sell his home and move away, unwittingly providing the perfect space for the Sewing Circus's new community center.
