When She Was Me

Identical twins Cassie and Lenora live in near-total isolation on a forty-five-acre campground outside Maryville, Tennessee. They relocated two years earlier after Lenora's obsessive behavior toward neighbors in Chattanooga nearly led to her arrest. Cassie collects trash from an empty field called the Blacktop and runs a true crime YouTube channel with over a million subscribers. Lenora has severe agoraphobia, a condition that makes leaving familiar spaces feel unbearable, and she rarely exits the cabin, conducting video therapy with her therapist, Daphne. Fifteen years earlier, the twins witnessed their mother standing over their father's body with a knife. Their mother's whereabouts have been unknown ever since, and the sisters have never spoken fully about that night.

When Wayne, the campground's owner, dies, his nephew sells the property to Sarah Hill, a woman who arrives alone from San Antonio. Sarah agrees to let the twins stay. Cassie maintains a secret relationship with Parker, a man she met at the campground months earlier. Lenora overhears them one night, and the confrontation that follows exposes the sisters' fragile dynamic. Cassie breaks down and asks whether the night that destroyed their family has ruined them forever.

A family arrives at the neighboring cabin: fifteen-year-old Tilly Meadows, her father Robert, and her mother Karen. Cassie encounters Tilly in the woods late at night and forms an immediate rapport with the sarcastic girl. Lenora becomes fixated on Tilly, watching her from the window for hours. After a storm, Tilly's body is found there. Detectives interview both sisters. Lenora reveals she saw Tilly's shadow leaving Tilly's cabin the night of the disappearance and discloses Karen's slap. When Cassie confronts Lenora with the coin, Lenora admits she woke outside that night with no memory of what happened and asks what Cassie will do if Lenora did something terrible.

Interspersed with the present narrative are past-timeline chapters told from the perspective of two unnamed sisters. These initially appear to be Cassie and Lenora's childhood memories. The narrator watches her sister anxiously, worried about a fire the previous summer at Wellesley House, a nearby manor, that killed a girl named Kate Wellesley. Their father cycles through disappearances driven by a drug addiction; their mother is bitter and volatile. The sister brings home a friend named Monica from a group home. At church, Kate's sister Joan, whose face bears burn scars from the fire, accuses the narrator's sister of starting it. The chapters darken when the sister claims their father has been sexually abusing her for two years and asks the narrator to help kill both parents. The narrator proposes running away, though she begins to doubt her sister after discovering hidden surveillance-style photos of Kate and Monica.

The past timeline climaxes when the narrator opens the bedroom door and finds their mother dead with a knife in her chest and Monica slumped nearby. The sister is covered in blood. She then calls the narrator Sandra, and the narrator calls her Emily. The entire past timeline belongs not to Cassie and Lenora but to Sandra and Emily Wells: Sarah Hill is Sandra, and Emily, her sister long believed dead, is the killer. Sandra helped Emily cover up the murders by setting the house on fire.

In the present, tensions escalate. Karen breaks into the twins' cabin, pins Lenora to the floor, and demands to know what Lenora did to Tilly before Cassie returns with a rifle and Karen is arrested. Lenora discovers hallway camera footage showing a woman wearing Lenora's robe and glasses entering her bedroom. Cassie suspects sleepwalking, but Lenora believes the footage shows an intruder. Cassie grows closer to Sarah, spending evenings on her porch, while Lenora feels increasingly isolated. A bitter argument exposes deep fractures: Cassie admits she feels trapped and blames Lenora for their situation.

The night Karen is released from custody, someone sets the twins' cabin on fire using accelerant. Lenora, sleepwalking again, wakes in the woods and sees the cabin ablaze. She crawls into the burning structure and drags Cassie to safety. At the hospital, Parker tells Cassie he saw Lenora leave the cabin just before the fire started. Sarah arranges for the twins to recover in Cabin Three.

Using a childhood photo she took from Sarah's belongings, Lenora runs a reverse image search and discovers that Sarah Hill does not exist online. The photo matches a missing-person poster for Sandra Wells, who vanished fifteen years ago the night a fire killed her family. Cassie, exhausted by Lenora's investigations, searches Sarah's cabin but finds nothing. Then Cassie vanishes without a note. Sarah finds Lenora panicking in the woods and brings her to Cabin One, where Lenora confronts her. Sarah tearfully confirms she is Sandra Wells, saying she has been running from the person who destroyed her family. Lenora finds evidence Cassie was near Sarah's cabin before vanishing and calls the police, who search the property and find nothing.

During a storm, Lenora traces a rhythmic sound in the forest to a hidden storm-shelter entrance. She descends and follows a tunnel to a lit room, where she finds Cassie bound on a mat. Sarah and a tall, blond woman named Emily, Sarah's younger sister, stand in the room. Sarah explains that Emily has a compulsive need to harm people. After the killings in their youth, Sarah changed their identities and confined Emily in a hidden panic room in Cabin One, not knowing the room connected to an underground tunnel that allowed Emily to escape. Emily had been watching the twins, entering their cabin, wearing Lenora's clothes, and appearing as the mysterious figure in windows and woods. She strangled Tilly after the girl spotted her during a nighttime excursion.

Sarah tells Emily to finish and climbs the ladder. Emily attacks Lenora. Cassie frees herself by sawing through zip ties with broken glass and tackles Emily. Emily is struck with a brick but stabs Lenora in the back as the twins scramble up the ladder, then begins strangling Cassie. Sarah reappears and drives a knife into Emily, killing her to save the twins.

Four weeks later, the sisters sit at the Blacktop. Lenora's wound is healing, and she ventures outside more each day. Sarah took a plea deal and is in prison. Karen Meadows returned briefly and apologized. Lenora has secured a book deal to tell their story, and the twins plan to travel together before settling somewhere new.

On the rock, they finally speak about the night their mother killed their father. Cassie remembers telling Lenora to run, then going back when Lenora did not follow. Lenora reveals what she has never shared: Their mother did not attack her but placed the knife in Lenora's hands and guided the blade into her own stomach. Lenora has carried the guilt for fifteen years, never certain whose force drove the knife. Cassie found Lenora covered in blood and assumed self-defense. Together, they buried their mother in a field that later became the Blacktop, the ground beneath where they now sit. They told police their mother fled after killing their father. Lenora asks whether Cassie should have turned her in, comparing herself to Emily. Cassie rejects the comparison. When Lenora asks why Cassie came back that night, Cassie answers: She will always go back.
