The first book in the Spirit Animals series is set in Erdas, a world of four known continents: Eura, Nilo, Zhong, and Amaya. In Erdas, children who turn 11 drink the Nectar of Ninani in a bonding ceremony, hoping to summon a spirit animal. Those who succeed often join the Greencloaks, an organization that protects Erdas. Long ago, 15 Great Beasts shaped the world. Four of them, Briggan the Wolf, Uraza the Leopard, Jhi the Panda, and Essix the Falcon, gave their lives to defeat a tyrant known as the Devourer and became known as the Four Fallen. No spirit animal has ever been the same species as a Great Beast.

In Eura, a shepherd's son named Conor works as a servant to Devin Trunswick, the eldest son of a local earl, to pay off his father's debts. At the Trunswick Nectar Ceremony, Devin drinks first, expecting to continue his family's history of summoning spirit animals, but nothing happens. When Conor drinks, the ground trembles, the sky darkens, and a wolf with cobalt-blue eyes appears in a flash of light. Conor recognizes the wolf as Briggan, patron beast of Eura and one of the Four Fallen. The wolf licks Conor's palm, completing the bond. A foreign Greencloak named Tarik announces that Briggan has returned.

In the drought-stricken village of Okaihee on the Niloan savannah, a skilled young hunter named Abeke drinks the Nectar and a large leopard with violet eyes appears: Uraza, the legendary guardian of Nilo. Rain pours for the first time in over two years. Though the village Greencloak declares Abeke the new Rain Dancer, her father Pojalo is more confounded than celebratory. A stranger named Zerif appears wearing a blue cloak rather than green, claiming war is coming to Erdas as the Fallen Beasts return.

In the Zhongese city of Jano Rion, Meilin, daughter of General Teng, one of Zhong's five high military commanders, prepares for her Bonding Day. Though she presents herself as a refined noblewoman, she has secretly trained in hand-to-hand combat since age five. Just before the ceremony, she learns that the invasion of Zhong has begun. Meilin drinks the Nectar and a giant panda with silver eyes appears: Jhi, another of the Four Fallen. Meilin is dismayed, as a panda seems useless in combat. Before an Amayan Greencloak named Lenori can announce Jhi's return, invaders attack the city. General Teng orders Meilin to flee with the Greencloaks, judging that Jhi makes her vital to a larger fight. Meilin escapes through a tunnel while her father holds off attackers.

In the Amayan port city of Concorba, a nearly 12-year-old orphan named Rollan is arrested for a theft he did not commit. In jail, a Greencloak administers the Nectar, and a gyrfalcon with amber eyes lands on his shoulder: Essix, patron beast of Amaya and the last of the Four Fallen. Zerif pays Rollan's bail and tries to take him, but Essix warns Rollan, who senses deception and bolts. Olvan, the worldwide commander of the Greencloaks, rescues Rollan and reveals that Zerif works for the Devourer.

Zerif convinces Abeke's father that she must leave for her safety. Aboard a ship, Zerif entrusts Abeke to Shane, a 12-year-old boy with a wolverine spirit animal. Shane trains Abeke, helping her deepen her bond with Uraza. In a moment of connection, Uraza voluntarily enters her passive state, becoming a tattoo on Abeke's arm, a form that allows spirit animals to rest dormant on their partner's skin.

At Sunset Tower, a Greencloak fortress in western Amaya, Rollan feels like a prisoner. One night he attempts to escape, but Conor confronts him, admits his own doubts, and argues that Briggan trusts the Greencloaks. Conor's sincerity persuades Rollan to stay. Tarik reveals that Uraza's partner was reached by enemies before the Greencloaks could find her.

On a tropical island, Abeke discovers men using a substance called "the Bile" to transform animals into grotesque monsters. Shane claims the experimenters are unsanctioned. Later, Abeke meets General Gar, king of the Lost Lands of Stetriol, a fifth continent she has never heard of. Gar and Zerif explain that the Greencloaks erased Stetriol from maps and denied its people the Nectar for centuries. Gar claims his people want the talismans, powerful totems each Great Beast guards, as leverage to force the Greencloaks to share the Nectar. Moved by their cause, Abeke agrees to help retrieve a talisman.

Meanwhile, Meilin sleepwalks onto a rain-soaked rooftop and finds herself locked out during a storm. Jhi opens the door from inside, and Meilin embraces the panda with genuine gratitude. Lenori discovers Conor has been dreaming about Arax the Ram, another Great Beast, and guides him into a vision revealing the path to Arax's talisman. Olvan explains the full crisis: The Devourer, once aided by the Great Beasts Kovo the Ape and Gerathon the Serpent, nearly conquered all of Erdas before the Four Fallen sacrificed themselves to stop him. Kovo and Gerathon were imprisoned afterward. Now the Devourer, or someone like him, has returned and is seeking the talismans. Olvan tasks the children with retrieving them, starting with Arax's Granite Ram. Conor and Meilin pledge to help. Rollan agrees to assist without taking vows. Before departing, Olvan offers Rollan material compensation.

The group rides west to find Barlow and Monte, two former Greencloaks whose bear and raccoon spirit animals match Conor's vision. At a trading post in the frontier town of Boulder City, the sight of three Fallen Beasts convinces the reluctant pair to guide them into the mountains. Along the way, Meilin defeats the leader of a tribal war party in a formal combat contest, winning the group safe passage. A violent hailstorm sent by Arax batters them, and Jhi reveals her gift as a healer by mending Rollan's wound.

On a mountain ledge, Arax acknowledges the Fallen Beasts but refuses to surrender his talisman, insisting the Great Beasts should remain apart. He warns that Gerathon and Kovo are stirring from their imprisonment. When he senses Uraza among approaching strangers, he charges. Zerif's forces, including Abeke and Shane, arrive to seize the talisman. Amid the chaos, Abeke grows torn between sides. She retrieves the talisman herself, making death-defying leaps across crumbling ledges with Uraza's power. She secures the Granite Ram around her neck, its magic amplifying Uraza's abilities.

Arax charges Abeke, but Barlow wraps his arms around the ram's hind leg and heaves the Great Beast over the precipice. Zerif stabs Barlow through the back. Barlow dies on the ledge, asking to be buried in a green cloak. When Zerif calls for Abeke to follow, she refuses, aims her bow at him, and declares she is no longer on his side. She gives the Granite Ram to the Greencloaks and asks to join them. Tarik accepts.

The group returns to Sunset Tower, where Barlow is buried in Tarik's green cloak and Monte renews his Greencloak vows. Abeke officially joins the order. The four children gather atop the tower, three in green cloaks and Rollan in gray, though he affirms he is not going anywhere. Conor reveals he has been having nightmares about a boar, suggesting their next quest involves Rumfuss the Boar, another Great Beast. In a brief epilogue, a lone figure on the far side of Erdas uses a carved key to free Gerathon the Serpent from an earthen prison, confirming the threat Arax warned about and raising the stakes for the conflicts ahead.
