Window on the Bay

The novel follows two best friends, Jenna Boltz and Maureen Zelinski, as they navigate empty nests, new romances, and evolving relationships with their adult children. The story alternates primarily between Jenna's and Maureen's first-person perspectives, with occasional chapters from Jenna's daughter Allie's viewpoint.

A prologue establishes the friendship's foundation. Jenna and Maureen met as freshmen at the University of Washington while taking French classes and bonded over a shared dream of visiting Paris. During their senior year, Maureen revealed she was pregnant by Peter Zelinski, one of her calculus tutoring students, canceling the trip. Jenna refused to go without her best friend, and both vowed to get there someday.

Years later, Jenna is a nurse with twenty years of ICU experience at Seattle Central Hospital. Her youngest child, Allie, has just moved into a dorm, and her son Paul is studying engineering at a college in Pullman, Washington. A single mother for sixteen years after divorcing Kyle Boltz, a surgeon whose affairs ended their marriage and who abandoned his children, Jenna now sits alone in her house overlooking Elliott Bay. She invites Maureen, also divorced, over to watch Casablanca and revive their Paris plans. They agree to go the following spring.

The evening is cut short when Jenna's mother, Carol, breaks her hip. Dr. Rowan Lancaster, the hospital's top orthopedic surgeon, performs the surgery. Jenna is embarrassed after nervously rambling about her mother's garden in front of him but is touched when he has his nurse escort her to recovery, an unusually personal gesture.

Meanwhile, Maureen, a librarian at the Seattle Public Library, is intrigued by Logan, a union plumber from a nearby construction site who visits her desk every Monday for book recommendations and teasingly calls her Marian the Librarian. Maureen's daughter Tori, who had a miscarriage the previous year, urges her mother to pursue him. Logan asks Maureen for a drink, but their first date at a rowdy sports bar is a disaster: His coworkers laugh when he introduces her as a librarian, and Maureen, humiliated, storms out.

As Carol recovers, Rowan overhears Jenna and Maureen discussing dating and volunteers to take Jenna out. She refuses, and Carol scolds her for being rude. Jenna later explains to Rowan that she avoids dating physicians because of her failed marriage. He accepts gracefully. Rich Gardner, the CEO of Parkview, the rehabilitation facility where Carol is staying, also shows interest in Jenna, but she is unmoved.

Logan returns to the library and persuades Maureen to meet him at a quieter bar. They admit they missed each other, and he invites her to a Seahawks football game. At the game, Logan outfits her with a jersey and gear, and when the Seahawks score a last-second touchdown, they share a passionate first kiss amid the stadium celebration.

Rowan invites Jenna on a drive to see the fall colors. During a hike around Gold Creek Lake, he asks to kiss her, and they share a series of increasingly intense kisses. Their bond deepens when Rowan visits Carol on her first night home from rehabilitation and stays for dinner. While washing dishes together, he confesses he noticed Jenna at the hospital Christmas party the previous year but was afraid to approach because of his failed marriage. He tells Jenna she frightened him with how much he wanted to be with her.

Allie, adjusting to college, befriends Mackensie, a transfer student from California. The two bond over absent fathers and get tattoos together. Allie also struggles with changes at home, feeling displaced by new furnishings and her mother's evolving life.

Rowan loses a nine-year-old patient during surgery due to an undetected heart defect. Jenna finds him in his trashed office, holds him until he breaks down, and impulsively kisses him. Overwhelmed by the intensity of her feelings and her fear of being hurt again, she flees.

The relationship shatters when Allie brings Mackensie to the house while Rowan is cooking dinner. Mackensie freezes upon recognizing Rowan as her father. He is equally stunned, having had no idea his daughter transferred to Seattle. Jenna, drawing an immediate parallel to Kyle's abandonment of their children, asks Rowan to leave and refuses to hear his explanations. She ignores his texts and accepts an invitation to a charity gallery event from Rich. At the gallery, she encounters Rowan, who sees Rich's arm around her waist and walks away in visible pain.

Maureen and Logan's relationship also fractures. Maureen takes Logan to see the New York City Ballet, hoping to prove that dancers are as athletic as football players, but Logan falls asleep during the second half. Later, Maureen surprises Logan at the sports bar and overhears his friends mocking the ballet outing and calling her a prude. Logan laughs along and fails to correct a coworker who claims he is finished with Maureen. She confronts him and walks out. Logan chases her and says he loves her, but she refuses to respond.

Paul arrives home to reveal he dropped out of college two months earlier to work full-time at a restaurant, mentored by the owner, Walter Owen, who sees entrepreneurial potential in him. Jenna says the work is beneath his intelligence. Paul leaves, hurt, and stops returning her calls. Meanwhile, Tori announces she is pregnant, with the baby due in June, and Maureen and Jenna postpone their Paris trip so Maureen can be present for her grandchild's birth.

Tori confronts Maureen, arguing she has been sabotaging relationships since her divorce because she is afraid to give her heart away. Maureen eventually texts Logan to say she loves him. When she arrives home, his truck is parked outside. He demands she say it aloud, and she shouts her love in front of the neighborhood. They reconcile, with Logan asking her to stop pulling away at every setback.

At Allie's urging, Jenna meets with Mackensie, who reveals the full truth: Her mother intercepted Rowan's gifts and letters after the divorce, blocked his court-ordered visitation, and told Mackensie her father wanted nothing to do with her. Rowan spent thousands on attorneys trying to see his daughter. Mackensie transferred to Seattle to discover what kind of person her father was but tested him with manipulative demands rather than approaching him directly. Allie helped Mackensie see that Rowan's refusal to be manipulated was proof of genuine love, and father and daughter have been rebuilding their relationship.

Jenna realizes she was wrong. At Carol's seventy-fifth birthday party, Rowan holds Jenna while she weeps about Paul and tells her he loves her. He then arranges a meeting where Jenna meets Bill Janacek, a successful restaurateur also mentored by Mr. Owen. Paul appears, explains his plans, and agrees to re-enroll in college with a hospitality major. Mother and son reconcile. Walking through the Seattle evening afterward, Rowan proposes by asking how Jenna feels about Allie and Mackensie becoming stepsisters. She accepts, and they kiss under a lamppost.

An epilogue five years later finds Jenna narrating Thanksgiving morning. She is married to Rowan, and Carol has passed away peacefully at seventy-nine. Allie, a social worker, and Mackensie, a physician assistant, are close as sisters. Paul owns a restaurant and has a young family. Maureen and Logan are together. Jenna reveals that she and Maureen finally took a spontaneous trip to Paris before their marriages, fulfilling their decades-old dream. Looking out at a house full of family, Jenna reflects that her once-empty nest has been filled in ways she never anticipated.
