Worlds Collide

Worlds Collide is the sixth and final book in Chris Colfer's The Land of Stories series, a fantasy saga about twin siblings who travel between the real world (called the Otherworld) and a parallel dimension inhabited by fairy-tale characters.

The novel opens with a prologue set decades in the future. Eighty-year-old Conner Bailey, a beloved children's author, attends his birthday celebration at a bookstore. A young fan asks what happened to his twin sister, Alex, who vanishes from public records after seventh grade. Conner realizes he cannot remember. At home, he rereads his Fairytaletopia series and recalls the inspirations behind the first five books but draws a blank on the sixth. He opens it, hoping the story will remind him where Alex went.

The narrative shifts to the main story. At the New York Public Library, a young woman matching Alex's description appears under a witch's curse. Her eyes glow, and she blasts a security guard with magic before levitating outside, striking the library's lion statues with lightning, and bringing them to life as stone guardians.

At Saint Andrew's Children's Hospital in Willow Crest, fifteen-year-old Conner is distraught over Alex's week-long disappearance. His fairy-tale friends Jack, Red Riding Hood, and Goldilocks have searched the kingdoms without success. The fairy-tale world remains occupied by the Literary Army, a force of villains from classic literature. Goldilocks suggests the witches may have kidnapped Alex. When a news broadcast shows the library under attack, Conner recognizes Alex's magic and heads for New York.

In a parallel storyline, Froggy, a prince cursed to look like a frog and engaged to Red, is trapped inside a magic mirror by the witch Morina. He discovers he can travel through the darkness connecting all mirrors and overhears the Literary Emperors—three villains from classic literature who have seized control of the fairy-tale kingdoms, the Queen of Hearts, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Captain Hook—planning to invade the Otherworld after the witches weaken its defenses. In the world of Camelot, a young squire named Arthur communicates with Alex in a shared dream. She tells him she has been cursed and forced to do terrible things. When his mentors, Merlin and Mother Goose, dismiss his account, Arthur pulls the sword from the stone to prove his resolve.

Conner leads his friend Bree, along with Jack, Goldilocks and her newborn son Hero, and Red on a flight to New York. On the plane, Bree reveals she is a descendant of the Brothers Grimm and belongs to a secret society called the Sisters Grimm, who track interdimensional phenomena. She explains that the two worlds periodically overlap, creating temporary portals, and predicts the next overlap will form a permanent bridge in New York City.

In Manhattan, the group encounters Rusty, a homeless former Belvedere Castle janitor who lost his job after reporting a vision of the portal to the police, who guides them through an abandoned subway tunnel beneath the library. They find Alex unconscious in the Rose Main Reading Room. Morina appears and reveals her scheme: She cursed Alex using dust from an evil magic mirror, the same method once used to create the Enchantress, an earlier villain of immense destructive power. The dust fills its host with amplified rage and despair while giving the witches total control. Morina's true plan is to let the witches weaken the Otherworld and be destroyed, then send the Literary Army through the bridge to conquer both worlds for herself.

At midnight, the bridge materializes and hundreds of witches pour through, led by the Snow Queen and the Sea Witch, two ancient witch rulers who masterminded the plot to curse Alex and conquer the Otherworld. They battle Marines on Fifth Avenue before retreating into Central Park, where Alex erects a force field dome that warps time, making hours pass inside while seconds elapse outside. The witches enslave hundreds of Boy and Girl Scouts, forcing them to build an army of gingerbread soldiers. Conner and his friends are captured.

Froggy's journey through the mirror dimension eventually leads to his freedom. He encounters Medusa, a creature from Greek mythology recruited by earlier antagonists to petrify enemies, who gives him a bottle of tears capable of reversing petrification. He frees the royal families from stone and, accompanied by Rook, a farmer's son seeking to atone for a previous betrayal of the royal families, reaches the Fairy Palace ruins, where he finds Mother Goose, Merlin, and Arthur, who has founded the Knights of the Round Table. Froggy frees the Fairy Council—the ruling body of fairies in the fairy-tale world—with the remaining tears.

Charlotte, the twins' mother, mobilizes characters from Conner's short stories, figures brought to life through earlier magical adventures. They fly to New York and reunite with Froggy's group on Liberty Island. Arthur takes command. Charlotte writes a story about meeting the deceased authors James M. Barrie, L. Frank Baum, and Lewis Carroll, enters it using Portal Potion, a magical substance that allows users to step inside written stories, and learns each villain's weakness.

When Alex's shield briefly drops, the Fairy Council charges onto the Great Lawn and duels the witches. Xanthous and Emerelda, two members of the Fairy Council, melt the Snow Queen and shatter the Sea Witch, while the others defeat their opponents. A sniper fires at Alex, but Rook steps into the bullet's path and dies. His death amplifies the curse beyond control, and Alex disappears in a spiral of light, becoming a destructive force loose in the city.

The Literary villains fall across Manhattan through coordinated attacks. Auburn Sally, one of Conner's short-story characters, helps defeat Captain Hook atop the Empire State Building. The Lost Boys, characters from Neverland, melt the Wicked Witch with water balloons. The Tin Woodman, a figure from Oz, beheads the Queen of Hearts. Jack and Goldilocks rescue Hero from the fleeing witches.

In Times Square, Emerelda tries to talk Alex down by taking responsibility for past failures, and Alex begins to calm, but Morina reappears and orders Alex to destroy everything, starting with New York City. Red frees herself and deflects Morina's lethal blast with a hand mirror, killing the witch with her own magic. Red and Froggy, long engaged, seize the moment to marry, but Alex, still under the curse's final command, continues devastating Manhattan.

With a nuclear strike authorized, Conner enacts a desperate plan atop the Freedom Tower. His friends, disguised as him by Merlin's magic, serve as decoys while the real Conner narrates a story about Alex's life: a brilliant girl held to impossible standards, never told it was acceptable to make mistakes. He tackles Alex through a beam of Portal Potion light into a world he wrote where curses cannot exist. Inside, they find their late father, John Bailey, alive and baking cookies. Alex weeps tears of joy that wash every trace of the curse from her body. John tells them that happily ever after is not a destination but a commitment to finding happiness within yourself. The story dissolves and the twins escape, the curse permanently broken.

Alex puts the world to sleep for a week while she and her friends rebuild Manhattan using healing dragon fire and erase all memories of the invasion. The twins visit President Walker, the President of the United States, in the Oval Office and entrust her with a storybook containing the sealed bridge between worlds. In the fairy-tale world, the kingdoms are restored. Alex hosts a reception and delivers a toast redefining happily ever after as holding on to joy through any storm. Characters return to their home stories, Red and Froggy adopt the Lost Boys, and Alex and Conner share a quiet moment, confident that nothing can defeat them together.

In the epilogue, old Conner's granddaughter, Charlotte "Charlie" Black, overhears her mother and uncle planning to move him to assisted living. She warns him, and he says he is leaving to visit his sister. Charlie peeks through a window and sees an older woman in a sparkling robe appear in a flash of light: Alex, scolding Conner for forgetting a memory potion she had left him to help him remember their shared history. The twins vanish together. Charlie climbs to the attic and discovers a glowing emerald-green storybook titled The Land of Stories, its pages beginning to shine.
