Plot Summary

The novel alternates between two timelines: present-day interviews in which plane crash survivors Lillian Linden and Dave Hall recount their ordeal for an exclusive television special, and past events that reveal what actually happened on the deserted island where they were stranded for nearly two years. The gap between these accounts, widened by secrets and forbidden love, drives the story.

In the present, Lillian sits in her living room, preparing for an on-camera interview with Genevieve Randall, a reporter from Headline News. Lillian has agreed to the exclusive partly because the contract's exclusivity clause will prevent other outlets from pursuing her afterward. She reminds herself that lying is the only way to protect the ones she loves. Her husband, Jerry, a lawyer, stays upstairs while the cameras roll.

The past timeline begins when Lillian and her mother-in-law, Margaret, board a small chartered jet in Fiji for the second leg of a vacation Margaret won through a Carlton Yogurt sweepstakes. Also on the plane are Theresa, the flight attendant; Kent, the pilot; and Dave Hall, a Carlton public relations representative escorting the sweepstakes winners. Just before takeoff, Dave receives a devastating phone call from his wife, Beth, who confesses she missed critical hormone injections needed to sustain their in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos. Dave suspects she sabotaged the pregnancy deliberately. Lillian, overhearing his anguish, moves to the seat beside him, and the two spend hours in easy, intimate conversation.

An engine explosion interrupts them. A violent lurch throws Theresa into the lavatory door, breaking her neck and killing her instantly. Kent orders an emergency water landing, and the plane crashes into the ocean. Lillian frees Dave from his jammed seatbelt, and together they carry the unconscious Margaret into an inflatable lifeboat. Dave returns to the sinking plane to retrieve a life jacket and Lillian's backpack, which contains water, granola bars, and other supplies that prove essential. He nearly drowns swimming through the storm to reach the raft, where Kent has also climbed aboard. Margaret appears dead from a massive head wound caused by Lillian's unsecured laptop striking her during impact.

Kent reacts with fury when he learns Theresa's body was left behind, nearly throwing Dave overboard before Lillian intervenes. She claims responsibility for both deaths and begs Kent to stay. The survivors drift for three days before reaching a small, uninhabited island. Margaret, still alive but comatose, dies within 24 hours of landing. Kent takes charge as a skilled but domineering survivalist, while Dave and Lillian forage together and support each other emotionally. The three sleep side by side in a bamboo shelter for warmth.

As weeks pass, Kent begins sexually harassing Lillian at night, reaching under her clothing while she pretends to sleep. His advances escalate to openly threatening behavior: he grabs her on the beach, sniffs her hair, and presses his body against hers. Lillian moves to sleeping by the fire to escape him. Dave, sensing the danger, crafts her a stone knife with a wooden handle and warns her to keep it hidden, telling her Kent watches her like a predator.

On Day 113, Kent attacks Lillian at the freshwater pool where she bathes. He smothers her until she loses consciousness, drags her through mud, and begins cutting off her clothes with his knife in preparation to assault her. Dave bursts through the trees to intervene. Kent attacks Dave, disarms him, and strangles him until Dave blacks out. Lillian retrieves the knife Dave made for her and stabs Kent repeatedly in the back, killing him and saving Dave's life. Dave promises to erase the evidence: he drags Kent's body to the island's cliffs, slashes the corpse to attract sharks, and pushes it into the ocean. He burns Kent's clothes and lets rain wash away the blood. In their present-day interviews, both Lillian and Dave tell a fabricated version of Kent's death, claiming he drowned in a shark attack while fishing alone.

With Kent gone, Dave withdraws from Lillian for weeks. When she confronts him, he confesses he has been staying away because he wants her so intensely he fears becoming like Kent. Lillian kisses him and tells him the difference is that Dave walked away when Kent never would have. They declare their love and begin living as partners on the island.

Months later, Lillian discovers she is pregnant despite her IUD, an implanted birth-control device. Dave is terrified that childbirth without medical care could kill her, but he resolves to care for her and the baby. On Day 465, he delivers their son, Paul, on the beach. Both parents are overwhelmed with love. Paul lives only three months before dying, likely from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Lillian blames herself and spirals into starvation and suicidal thoughts. In the present-day interviews, Lillian and Dave claim Paul was conceived before the crash, that Lillian arrived on the island unknowingly pregnant by Jerry. When Genevieve challenges this story, Jerry intervenes as Lillian's lawyer, threatening a libel suit and forcing the reporter to change course.

After their rescue, Dave and Lillian are hospitalized in Guam. Dave begs Lillian to leave Jerry and be with him, but she refuses, choosing her family. She asks Dave to maintain their lies, and he agrees on the condition that if things do not work out with Jerry, she will reconsider. Back in the United States, Lillian struggles to reconnect with her sons and Jerry, calling Dave nightly in secret. Jerry, consumed by jealousy, eventually forces an ultimatum after catching Lillian and Dave together during a trip to Los Angeles. Lillian chooses Jerry and cuts off all contact with Dave for 10 months.

Six months after the interview is filmed, the Lindens watch the broadcast, titled Nightmare in Paradise, at a party in their home. That night, Jerry reveals he has known the truth about Paul all along. Doctors in Guam told him Lillian had recently given birth, and he connected the timeline to Dave's behavior. He also reveals he had Lillian followed by a private investigator and deduced that her visit to a fertility clinic with Dave meant she donated her eggs so Dave and Beth could have a child, making their baby genetically Lillian's son. Stunned by Jerry's knowledge, Lillian inadvertently reveals she killed Kent. Jerry assures her it was self-defense and is furious she endured Kent's assault in silence.

Jerry tells Lillian to call Dave, signaling a new era of honesty. When she does, Beth answers and thanks Lillian for the egg donation, expressing eagerness for the families to visit so the half-siblings can know each other. Dave tells Lillian their baby's name is Solomon, a reference to the biblical king descended from David, echoing a conversation from their early days on the island about biblical names. Free of her secrets for the first time, Lillian feels ready to run toward the truth rather than away from it.
