Plot Summary

The story follows Breaker Cane, one of three brothers who run Cane Enterprises, and his best friend of 10 years, Lia.

A prologue set during their college years establishes the foundation of their bond. Lia, a transfer student struggling to find friends, stumbles into Breaker's dorm room during a meeting of the Secret Scrabble Society, a competitive word-game club he leads. She insults his thick mustache out of nervousness; he laughs rather than taking offense. They play Scrabble late into the night and discover shared passions ranging from fan fiction to board games. By the end of the evening, Lia asks Breaker to be her friend, and they shake on it, setting a boundary that will define the next decade.

In the present day, Breaker returns from a business trip to learn that a former employee is suing Cane Enterprises for hostile work environment and wrongful termination. His eldest brother, Huxley, orders him to take a mandatory sabbatical while the company investigates. That evening, Breaker brings dinner to Lia's apartment next door, where they have been neighbors for five years, and vents about the lawsuit. They share a nightly ritual of knocking on their shared wall: four knocks for "love," three for "you."

Lia has a secret of her own. Her boyfriend Brian Beaver proposed a week earlier, and his mother, Mrs. Beaver, whom Lia and Breaker privately call "The Beave," is demanding a wedding in five weeks. Lia has delayed telling Breaker because Brian and Breaker fell out after Brian tried to extract insider stock information and Breaker refused. When Lia reveals the engagement over tacos one evening, Breaker hides his displeasure and offers to serve as her "man of honor," using his time off to accompany her to every wedding appointment and shield her from The Beave.

Unable to sleep, Breaker visits his brother JP, who guesses Breaker is in love with Lia. Breaker denies it, insisting he is only worried about losing his best friend. JP, Huxley, and their wives counsel him to mend his relationship with Brian rather than interfere. Breaker meets Brian for lunch; Brian apologizes but arranges a double date, pairing Breaker with a woman named Birdy, the sister of one of his friends, as a test of whether Breaker harbors romantic feelings for Lia.

Wedding planning spirals into disaster. At a church viewing, The Beave reveals a guest list exceeding 2,000 invitations and tells Lia that Brian called her signature purple glasses "childish." Breaker privately reassures Lia that her glasses are one of his favorite things about her. While trying on The Beave's heirloom veil, Lia slips, grabs a candleholder for balance, and sets the veil on fire; Breaker douses the flames with holy water.

On the double date, Breaker finds Birdy charming, and they continue seeing each other casually. Yet when he kisses her, he feels no spark. Lia grows quietly unsettled by Breaker's time with Birdy. After a conversation with Huxley, Breaker concludes that Lia has always filled the role of emotional companion in his life. He tries to push Lia toward Brian by skipping their traditional game nights and sending Brian in his place. Lia confronts him, and their worst fight erupts. She accuses him of pushing her away; he argues they are "too close." She storms out, telling him not to bother coming to her dress appointment.

Breaker comes to the bridal shop anyway. He finds Lia crying in the dressing room and helps her choose dresses that suit her style. When Lia steps out in an off-the-shoulder cream lace gown, Breaker experiences an overwhelming reaction: racing heart, dry mouth, and a desperate urge to kiss her. He recognizes these as the same feelings he buried on the very first night they met. After the appointment, his friend Banner Bisley tells him bluntly that he is in love with Lia.

Breaker breaks things off with Birdy, who takes the news gracefully and coaches him on Brian's weaknesses, advising him to subtly show Lia he is the better match. Meanwhile, Lia creates a personal "knot list" of goals to complete before marriage, including feeling pretty, standing up for herself, and following her heart. She cuts and highlights her hair; Brian calls the change "a mistake," but Breaker tells her she looks stunning.

Intimacy between Breaker and Lia escalates. After Brian leaves town, Lia sleeps over at Breaker's apartment and asks him to spoon her. His hand wanders along her hip; she moves as if to kiss him, then presses her lips to his cheek. The next night, Breaker sends suggestive texts hinting his feelings go beyond friendship and knocks on their wall in a pattern that spells "I love you." Over lunch, Lia confides that Brian rarely wants physical intimacy. Breaker responds with a graphic description of how he would pleasure a woman, leaving Lia shaken.

When Brian returns, he and Lia fight about their intimacy, and he offers no concession. At a cake tasting, The Beave reveals that she and Brian secretly reversed all of Lia's wedding decisions and admits Lia was not her first choice for Brian. Lia removes her engagement ring, places it on the table, and delivers a speech cataloguing Brian's failures as a partner. She grabs a piece of cake and walks out with Breaker.

That night, they celebrate with pizza, hard cider, and board games. Drunk and giddy, they end up in Breaker's bed, where light touches escalate until they both climax through their clothes. Lia panics and slips out in the middle of the night. Breaker does not retreat. Following his brothers' advice, he initiates increasingly bold encounters, from performing oral sex on Lia to mutual encounters, each time refraining from kissing her on the lips and saving their first kiss for the right moment.

Lia consults JP's wife Kelsey, Huxley's wife Lottie, and a friend named Myla at a knitting club. The women confirm Breaker has a deliberate plan and encourage Lia to make her own move. After another intimate encounter, Breaker asks Lia on a date, and she accepts.

The date fulfills a dream Lia described in college: a full day at Disneyland with matching themed shirts. Over lunch, Breaker confesses that on the night they met, he planned to ask her out but held back because she asked for friendship. As fireworks burst above the castle, Lia asks him to confirm they are exclusive, then asks him to kiss her. The kiss is electric for both of them.

Back at his apartment, they have sex for the first time. Over the following days, they are inseparable and announce their relationship at a family brunch, where Huxley and Lottie reveal they are expecting a baby girl and JP and Kelsey announce their own pregnancy.

Despite their happiness, Breaker senses something holding Lia back. When she runs into Brian, he asks to meet for coffee to find closure. Lia agrees without telling Breaker, recognizing that an unresolved chapter is preventing her from fully committing. Brian admits the proposal was driven by his mother's pressure and that he was never fully invested. They part peacefully. Meanwhile, JP spots them through the coffee shop window and alerts Breaker, who waits in Lia's apartment in a panic. When Lia arrives carrying her wedding dress, which Brian returned, Breaker begs her not to choose Brian. Lia calms him, explains she needed closure, and tells him she is in love with him. Breaker reciprocates.

In the epilogue, Breaker and Lia have moved into a house one block from his brothers' homes. At a Sunday brunch, Breaker executes a surprise proposal with help from the entire family. He presents a three-stone ring representing past, present, and future, the exact style she once mentioned wanting. Lia says yes without hesitation.
