Plot Summary

The story follows Bennett Brinkman, a 24-year-old starting third baseman for the San Francisco Bombers, and Bower, his older sister Gabby's best friend, as their long-standing friendship transforms into a forbidden romance.

A prologue traces Bennett and Bower's history across eight years. At 16, Bennett is a scrawny aspiring baseball player living with Gabby, his 24-year-old sister who pulled him out of the foster care system. When Bower visits for the first time, Bennett is immediately struck by her beauty. Bower proposes they exchange phone numbers to secretly coordinate watching over Gabby, who has a pattern of hiding her struggles, including a recent abusive boyfriend. They promise each other complete transparency about Gabby's well-being. Over the following years, their bond deepens through texts. By 22, Bennett confides to Bower that he has a long-standing crush on someone, without revealing the crush is on her.

When Bower moves to San Francisco and into Bennett's apartment building, Bennett is ecstatic. He confides in his teammate Nolan Hart, a brash right fielder, that he sees Bower's arrival as his chance to pursue her. Bennett is also involved in a mandatory PR campaign: He, Foghorns football player Graydon St. John, and Rogue hockey player Oden "OC" O'Connor have been assigned volunteer work at the San Francisco Zoo to rehabilitate their teams' public images, though Bennett finds the work ineffective.

Bower stays at Bennett's apartment while her unit is being prepared. She works as an executive assistant to Adalade Von Herbert, a wealthy interior designer. Bower is warm and physically affectionate with Bennett, cuddling into him at night, but she treats him firmly as a friend, calling him "Benny Boo Boo." She asks Bennett to set her up with someone. On Nolan's advice, Bennett tries to arrange a date with a terrible match so he can appear superior by comparison. Through Graydon, he gets the name Cougar Vajeen, a Foghorns running back, but Nolan reveals that Cougar is extraordinarily charismatic, making him the worst possible choice for this strategy.

Bennett and Bower also form a two-person romance book club, reading and discussing novels together. When Bennett meets with Gretchen, the PR manager overseeing the teams' image campaigns, Bower happens to walk into the same coffee shop. Gretchen learns about the book club and proposes replacing the zoo duties with a public-facing version called "Books with Bombers," where Bennett recommends romance novels and discusses them with Bower on video.

Bower's first date with Cougar is mediocre, but she agrees to see him again, telling herself there is still "potential." Meanwhile, Bennett and Bower's daily routines intertwine: He buys her furniture, helps her settle in, and they establish morning rituals. When Adalade asks Bower to attend a dinner party with a date, Bennett volunteers. At the dinner, they pretend to be a couple, and Bennett seizes every opportunity to show his feelings, pulling her onto his lap and telling guests he would propose if he knew she would say yes.

Their physical relationship escalates through a series of increasingly intimate encounters. After the dinner party, a playful cupcake fight leads to Bower straddling Bennett, and both climax through their clothes. Bennett leaves afterward to avoid pressuring her, establishing a pattern he repeats through subsequent encounters in which he pleasures Bower and then departs. Before leaving for a 10-day road trip, he goes down on her against her apartment wall. That night, Bower lets herself into his apartment, reciprocates, and they spend the night together. She whispers that she is drawn to him but knows she should not be.

During the road trip, Bennett confesses over the phone that his long-standing crush has always been Bower. But when Gabby calls and asks Bower about a mystery girl Bennett seems to be secretly dating, the conversation triggers a wave of guilt. Bower feels she is violating both the transparency promise she and Bennett made and Gabby's trust in their friendship. She begins pulling away, avoiding Bennett's calls.

Bower runs into Cougar at a coffee shop, where he helps her with plans for The Whimsy Wagon, a mobile romance bookstore she has long dreamed of opening but fears pursuing because her father's failed business venture devastated her family. Paparazzi photographs of Bower and Cougar together surface online, fueling Bennett's anxiety. Through friends, Bennett learns that Bower has strong feelings for him but is paralyzed by fear of losing Gabby.

Bennett rushes to Bower's apartment the moment he returns from the trip and finds her in a red dress, leaving for a date with Cougar. He begs her to stay, confessing the depth of his feelings. She brushes the lightest kiss across his lips, then tells him to let her go. In Cougar's car, Bower realizes she cannot go through with the date and tells Cougar she has feelings for someone else. He accepts gracefully. She returns to Bennett's apartment, where he finds her crying in his bed. She tells him she is falling for him and cannot stop. Bennett kisses her fully for the first time, and they consummate their relationship.

They agree to keep the relationship secret until Bower is ready to tell Gabby. Bennett is elated, but Bower struggles under mounting guilt and responsibilities: Demands from Adalade, the book club launch, and building The Whimsy Wagon all compound her stress. Bennett confronts her about the distance between them, and Bower explains that her withdrawal stems from guilt over deceiving Gabby. She whispers "I love you" for the first time, and Bennett responds with his own declaration. Adalade then gives Bower 30 days' notice, not as punishment but as encouragement, telling her she will never achieve her dream while working as an assistant.

Gabby and Ryland, Gabby's partner, arrive for a surprise visit. Gabby pushes past Bennett into his apartment and finds Bower wearing only Bennett's T-shirt. Gabby accuses Bower of betraying their friendship and the trust between them. Bower, devastated, walks out. Bennett confronts Gabby, telling her he has loved Bower since he was 16 and that Bower agonized over the situation out of loyalty. Bower returns moments later and declares that she loves Bennett, that this is not a fling, and that while she is sorry, she will not cower. She tells Gabby that Bennett is her number one.

After Bower leaves for work, Gabby processes her shock and accepts the relationship, telling Bennett she just wants him to be happy. She asks to be involved when he is ready to propose. That evening, Gabby hugs Bower and apologizes. The four of them go to dinner, the relationship now fully in the open.

In the epilogue, Bower has launched The Whimsy Wagon, a teal vintage-wrapped mobile bookstore, and moved into Bennett's apartment. At the grand opening, surrounded by friends and family, Bennett quietly asks Ryland if he has the engagement ring ready. He plans to propose to Bower that night.
