The book’s sixth and final part centers on synesthesia, a rare neurological phenomenon in which stimulating one sense involuntarily triggers another. Ackerman’s commentary is grounded in the research of Dr. Richard Cytowič, the pioneering neurologist who challenged the prevailing view that synesthesia was a psychological quirk or a metaphorical concept, insisting that it is a neurological phenomenon originating in the limbic system—the primitive, emotional core of the mammalian brain. Cytowič’s own account of his field’s history explains why this reframing mattered: For most of the 20th century, synesthesia was dismissed partly because science lacked the tools to verify first-person sensory reports, and clinicians who acknowledged the condition at all “spoke of vague ‘crossed connections’ between poorly understood ‘nerve centers’” (Cytowič, Richard. “A Brief 200-Year History of Synesthesia.” The MIT Press Reader, 16 Nov. 2023). It took decades of accumulating brain-imaging evidence to validate synesthesia as a genuine window into the mind and brain. Ackerman directly incorporates this research to lend scientific authority to her lyrical descriptions of blended senses. She explains that Cytowič “traces the phenomenon to the limbic system […] calling synesthetes ‘living cognitive fossils,’ because they may be people whose limbic system is not entirely governed by the much more sophisticated (and more recently evolved) cortex” (290). By citing Cytowič, she frames synesthesia as an evolutionary echo of a more primitive, integrated mode of perception.
