Chapters 81-100 Analysis

This section fleshes out the character of Zed in more detail. The novel sets up Zed as Hardin’s foil—he has all of Hardin’s amorality, but none of his desire to become a better person. Zed and Hardin entered into the virginity bet about Tessa together; now, Zed is the person Hardin would least like to see Tessa be with. As has been foreshadowed multiple times previously, Tessa turns to Zed after she and Hardin break up. When Tessa asks Zed what would have happened if he had won the bet instead of Hardin, Zed promises kindness, painting himself as perfectly considerate. Zed’s nice-guy act doesn’t appeal to Tessa, however, who has shown herself to be much more attracted to Hardin’s desire to control her, illustrating the theme of the Desire to Control and Be Controlled. Zed makes the mistake of being too emotionally available just as Hardin breaks his phone and becomes both literally and figuratively unreachable—a manipulative withdrawal that reels Tessa in.

Whenever Hardin pulls away, Tessa can’t help but obsessively cling to him. Now, she calls Hardin and pours her heart out to him, but doesn’t get a response, just as she did when she was drunk, or when she ran back to Hardin after her mother didn’t tell her about her father’s return. Tessa’s dependence on Hardin is just as harmful as his violent rages. Meanwhile, Hardin’s unilateral conclusion that Tessa should be with someone else is not the sign of maturity he thinks it is, but a different aspect of his controlling nature, which never takes into account what Tessa might want. While Hardin’s actions might appear selfless, Hardin is still making decisions that Tessa should be making for herself.

The theme of the Desire to Control and Be Controlled also juxtaposes Hardin with Tessa’s mother. When he learns that Tessa has been staying at Zed’s house, he barges into Zed’s apartment to drag her out, doing the same thing Tessa’s mother attempted to do on Christmas Eve. Hardin is more successful than Tessa’s mother had been, showing that Tessa desires Hardin’s control more than she did her mother’s, but it is still a violent act that should not be a part of a healthy relationship.

Still, Hardin shows some character growth in this set of chapters. He responds to Landon being once again the voice of reason with a friendly overture; now, each time he seeks Landon’s advice, he attempts to put it into action. Also, Hardin accepts that Tessa is not ready to forgive him this time and acknowledges that their relationship will never be an easy one. Tessa also shows some growth as she begins to see that her actions have an impact on Hardin’s behavior. The novel argues that the two might be capable of a mature relationship at some point in the future.
