Chapter 6 Summary: “Tobias”

Tobias feels something is going to happen soon. Yesterday, he overheard Evelyn mention a demonstration. During breakfast, he hears shouts and runs out to see a group of factionless on Michigan Avenue outside Erudite Headquarters. The group chants “Death to factions.” They gather around the bowls used in the Choosing Ceremony and begin dumping their contents into the street. Some citizens still loyal to the factions try to stop the factionless; an Erudite man grabs Edward’s sledgehammer. Edward breaks free and swings again, but he is off balance and hits the Erudite in the shoulder, killing him. More people rush the factionless, and a fight breaks out. Tobias grabs Edward and runs to Tris on the edge of the crowd. Gunshots ring out, and the group scatters. Someone shot Edward.

Tobias is waiting in the hospital inside headquarters when Evelyn rushes in, asking Tobias if he’s hurt. Tobias says he’s fine, but Edward is dead. He sees Evelyn’s reaction and realizes they are closer than he knew. Tobias asks Evelyn why she didn’t tell him about the demonstration, but she responds that she didn’t know. He knows Evelyn is lying but doesn’t press her.

Chapter 7 Summary: “Tris”

Christina and Tris are walking toward the Hancock Building, and when they enter, they take the elevator to the top. The girls discuss Christina’s family and whether they should leave the city. They exit the elevator and climb the ladder to the roof; they find brothers Uriah and Zeke. They all talk about what they think is beyond the city.

In the Erudite Headquarters’ lobby the next day, Evelyn announces new rules to help create more stability for their new society. She sets a curfew from 9 pm to 8 am. She also announces that everyone will help to do the jobs that only the factionless did previously, working on a rotating schedule to keep things fair.

After listening to Evelyn’s announcement, Tris leaves the lobby and climbs a stairway. She hears a shuffling sound and opens the door to see a group of factionless beating a young man dressed in Candor colors. She tells them to stop, but a girl says he’s breaking the dress code as she kicks him again. Tris takes off her blue sweatshirt and throws it at the youth, who puts it around his shoulders. Tris says he’s no longer breaking the dress code. She walks away and tells the Candor to keep the sweatshirt. Tris continues walking down the hallway and finds a ransacked lab. The lights suddenly go out, and someone puts a bag over Tris’s head and pushes her against the wall. They are part of the Allegiant and don’t want to harm her. They are meeting tomorrow at midnight and ask her to bring her Dauntless friends. Tris returns to her bed in the dormitory and finds a note from Tobias: Caleb’s trial is tomorrow morning.

Chapter 8 Summary: “Tris”

The following day, Tris tells Christina and Uriah about what happened to her in the lab. Tris thinks they want to leave the city; this could be helpful since Tris also wants to leave. They all agree to go to the meeting, and Uriah volunteers to tell Tobias and Zeke.

Christina, Tris, and Uriah make their way to Candor Headquarters, and they climb the stairs to the interrogation room where the Candor leadership questioned Tobias and Tris in Insurgent. As they walk down the hall, Tobias steps out of the room, and all four go in together. Tris asks about Caleb, and Tobias confirms that Evelyn will execute Caleb for working with Jeanine Matthews.

The meeting begins when two Allegiant leaders, Cara and Johana, enter the room. Cara explains that they want to send people out of the city to fulfill the Divergent mission, even if the Divergent population isn’t big enough. She says their goals are to overthrow Evelyn, re-establish the factions, and send people outside the fence. Cara then lists six people she wants to take outside the fence, including Tobias and Tris. The group makes a plan and decides to leave tomorrow night.

Chapter 9 Summary: “Tobias”

Tris and Tobias walk back to Erudite Headquarters together. They stop and talk because Tris doesn’t know what to do about Caleb. She’s angry about his betrayal but doesn’t want him to die. Tobias promises to get Caleb out.

Chapter 10 Summary: “Tobias”

Tobias returns to the Dauntless section of the city and the fear landscape room. He uses a syringe to inject a serum and enters a simulation. Tobias quickly battles his fear of heights and tight spaces, but then he morphs into his father. Tobias overcomes this fear by slowly piecing himself back together over the image of Marcus. Next, he sees Tris, bloody and begging for help. He watches her die and wakes up from the simulation.

Tobias returns to Erudite Headquarters and goes to the prisoners’ cells. He uses his status as Evelyn’s son to get into Caleb’s cell; he tells Caleb his execution has been moved up to tonight. Caleb hits Tobias with a chair and tries to run, but Tobias quickly catches him in the hallway. Tobias binds Caleb’s hands and drags him down the hall to a door. Tobias knocks, and Zeke opens the door. He then hands Tobias his gun and tells Tobias to hit him to make it look like Tobias disarmed him. Tobias and Zeke say goodbye, as Zeke doesn’t want to leave the city. Tobias promises to look after Uriah and walks away with Caleb.

Tobias and Caleb continue down the alley and make their way to the train station. They run and jump onto the last train car, where Tris is waiting for them. Caleb realizes that Tobias saved him instead of executing him, and Tobias tells Caleb they’re all leaving the city. Tobias is happy to go because there are too many bad memories.

Chapters 6-10 Analysis

For the first time in the series, Roth gives her readers insight into Tobias’s mind and psychology by allowing him to tell the story from his perspective. One of the first things readers understand about Tobias is his mixed and complicated feelings about his mother, Evelyn. As he states, they are together in fear since they both lived with Marcus and suffered his abuse, both physical and emotional. However, Evelyn cares only about power and being an absolute ruler over the city; Tobias wants freedom from fear and the freedom to make his own choices. However, Tobias knows that having a good relationship with his mother will help her trust him and give him information. So, he acts sympathetic when appropriate to try and appear trustworthy, using her knowledge and insight to help overthrow her.

This section also establishes the novel’s central conflict. The characters’ main goals are to overthrow Evelyn’s new government and to get a group outside the city boundary. Their first step in achieving these goals is to get a group outside Chicago to assess who’s out there and what conditions are. They know that Chicago is a genetic experiment, but they need to see if the people who put them there are still alive and what they are doing. Thus, the Allegiant form a group to investigate what’s happening in the outside world. Tobias and Tris are in this group, and they drag Caleb along to help him escape execution. The relationship between Caleb and Tris is as strained as that between Tobias and Evelyn, causing significant person vs. person conflict.

These chapters introduce another theme: The Desire for Freedom when the factionless try to destroy the Choosing Ceremony bowls. The bowls represent the freedom of choice each citizen had when choosing which faction they wanted to join.
