Emma Straub’s novel taps into the enduring cultural phenomenon of the modern boy band, which began in the late 1980s with groups like New Kids on the Block and peaked in the 1990s with acts such as the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. A Billboard article explains,
By definition, boy bands are groups made of men that not only create pop music, but also sing and dance—an important detail that excludes The Beatles from making the cut. The Jackson 5 quickly fell into this definition upon their founding in 1964 and became the blueprint for the genre throughout the ’60s and ’70s (Bowenbank, Starr. “Billboard Explains: The Magic of Boy Bands.” Billboard, 9 Feb. 2022).
These groups were marketed to a young, predominantly female audience using a formula of distinct personalities, synchronized choreography, and romantic ballads, which fostered intensely loyal fanbases. In the wake of 1990s boy bands’ success, boy-band culture didn’t resurface on the musical mainstage until the Jonas Brothers and One Direction in the 2000s. The latter group “was one of the first boy groups to benefit from social media and later paved the way for fan-based armies to thrive, as with BTS” (Bowenbank). Social media has also allowed boy-band members to maintain their public-facing image and broadcast their iconic personas to their lifelong fans.
In American Fantasy, the Talkers embody this culture through their lifelong devotion to the fictional boy band Boy Talk, creating custom merchandise and organizing their lives around the group. This fandom is built on parasocial relationships, which are one-sided emotional bonds that audiences form with media figures. Boy bands are designed to cultivate these connections, making fans feel as though they have a personal relationship with the members. The novel illustrates this phenomenon when Maira insists that the band leader Shawn Fiore “knows all of [the Talkers] in a way” (26). The Boy Talk cruise is a real-world manifestation of this dynamic, mirroring the annual fan cruises hosted by New Kids on the Block, which, as documented in pop-culture journalism, create an immersive environment where the perceived intimacy between artist and fan is intensified. This context clarifies why the fans’ connection feels so profound, revealing the cruise as the culmination of a decades-long, deeply personal investment.
