Jordan Stephanie Gray’s debut novel, Bitten (2025), is a young-adult paranormal romance that blends court fantasy with a classic revenge narrative. After her best friend, Celeste, is murdered in a vicious werewolf attack, 17-year-old Vanessa Hart is also bitten and forcibly transformed. Bitten is the first book in the Bitten duology (followed by Devoured in October 2026) and enters the young-adult market during a resurgence of interest in paranormal romance. The novel deliberately evokes the early-2010s era of werewolf and vampire fiction, blending its paranormal elements with the complex court politics and hierarchical world building popularized in contemporary romantasy. The story is set in a hidden pocket dimension accessed through a real historical site, the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida, grounding its magical realm in a place with a documented history of colonial bloodshed.

Plot Summary

Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Serafina Hart’s life is shattered when her best friend, Celeste Ward, is brutally killed in a werewolf attack. During a party on Anastasia Island in St. Augustine, Florida, Celeste gets into a fight with a group of wealthy, beautiful strangers led by a girl named Evelyn “Evie” Lee. Afterward, as Vanessa and Celeste walk home, two enormous wolves ambush them. One wolf rips out Celeste’s throat, and as Vanessa tries to defend her friend with a pocketknife, the second wolf bites her severely in the side. The attack leaves Vanessa grieving, wounded, and irrevocably changed. When her police-officer father arrives at the scene, so does a group from the party, led by a boy named Calix Severi. Calix reveals that they’re werewolves and declares that because she was bitten, Vanessa is now “property of the Wolf Queen’s Court” (40). Her father allows them to take her, and she’s driven to Castle Severi, a magical fortress hidden in a pocket dimension accessed through the historic Castillo de San Marcos.

Inside the castle, Vanessa endures an excruciating, multi-day transformation into a werewolf, tormented by hallucinations of a bloody Celeste who accuses her of letting her die. Fueled by rage and grief, Vanessa fully shifts into a wolf and breaks out of her locked room, seeking revenge. She follows Evie’s scent to the throne room, where she finds a court of werewolves led by Queen Sybil Severi and her son, Crown Prince Sinclair “Sin” Severi. Intrigued by Vanessa’s unprecedented purple eyes, the queen allows her to attack Evie. The fight is stopped by the queen, who demonstrates her power of compulsion—the ability to magically command another werewolf. Sybil offers Vanessa a choice: join the court and train for the upcoming Ascension Rite, a ceremony where young nobles form their permanent packs, or be killed. Believing that this is her only path to finding Celeste’s murderer, Vanessa swears a blood pact of allegiance to the queen.

Vanessa begins attending classes with other young nobles, including Evie, Sin, and Calix, but she’s ostracized as a “Bitten” (a turned human, considered inferior to “Born” werewolves). She undergoes the First Rite, a drowning ritual in an enchanted moon pool where an Oracle named Lyra declares her a “Truthseer,” gifted with the ability to detect lies. Convinced that Evie is Celeste’s killer, Vanessa begins her investigation but is met with mysterious threats: A bloody message that reads “GET OUT BITCH” appears on her nightgown and vanishes (100), and a mirror shatters with a warning before magically repairing itself. She finds a friend in her maid, Oona Gallagher, who warns her of the court’s dangers. Meanwhile, Vanessa develops a volatile romantic tension with Sin. He helps her understand that her primary emotional anchor for shifting is rage. Their clandestine meetings culminate in a passionate night together, which Evie discovers, solidifying her hatred for Vanessa. Calix, meanwhile, repeatedly clashes with Vanessa over her recklessness and refusal to obey the court’s laws, although his interventions sometimes protect her from the consequences of her actions. Their hostility gradually develops into an uneasy attraction, complicating Vanessa’s growing relationship with Sin.

A new lead emerges when Vanessa learns from Evie’s friend Nettie that Celeste exhibited the same symptoms as a Bitten human before her death: a fever, a rash-like scar on her neck, and uncontrollable rage. Vanessa realizes that Celeste was also bitten before being murdered and that her death was likely a cover-up for the illegal transformation. Calix also becomes an unexpected source of information when he reveals that his mother, Cora Severi, was banished for treason and that he has spent his life trying to prove his loyalty to the court. He urges Vanessa to investigate why Celeste was killed rather than focusing solely on identifying her murderer. Later, drawn by screams from a dungeon beneath the castle, Vanessa discovers human prisoners who were also illegally bitten and are being tortured. One victim describes being kidnapped by a woman with black eyes—the queen’s eye color—and injected with a syringe, the same method used on Vanessa. Sin confirms that his mother is treacherous, having usurped the throne from her sister Cora. They conclude that Queen Sybil is orchestrating the illegal bitings and murdered their instructor, Alvarez, who was killed on the same beach, to hide her conspiracy. They plan to expose her at the Ascension Rite, in front of visiting werewolf nobility. In the days leading up to the rite, Vanessa and Calix secretly leave the castle to find Sin, whose life is threatened by a mysterious danger that also causes Calix’s hand to decay because of their binding blood bargain. Forced into close proximity, Vanessa and Calix confront their growing attraction, even as Vanessa struggles with her unresolved anger toward her father during a brief return to St. Augustine. 

Shortly before the ceremony, Calix shows Vanessa a scar matching the wound she inflicted on one of the wolves during Celeste’s murder, revealing that he was the killer. He claims that he was following orders, but Vanessa attacks him in fury and nearly kills him before Sin compels her to stop. Sin then admits that he was the wolf who bit Vanessa to save her life and has concealed the truth about Celeste’s death throughout their relationship. The Ascension Rite begins, but the plan immediately goes awry. Instead of choosing Evie as his mate, Sin publicly chooses Vanessa, enraging Evie’s parents, the King and Queen of the Asian Court. Before a war can break out, the ceremony is ambushed by a pack of monstrous, mutated wolves who slaughter much of the court. To Vanessa’s horror, Sin uses his compulsion to freeze her and Evie in place, revealing his part in the attack. The leader of the invading pack is revealed to be Cora, Calix’s mother, who was not dead but secretly plotting her return. Cora drops a series of bombshells: She is Sin’s true mother, as Queen Sybil switched them at birth because her own son, Calix, was born a “weaker” Beta, while Sin was born a powerful Alpha. Furthermore, Cora reveals that Sin’s true gift is “Dreamweaving” and that he planted the visions of the bloody threats and the prisoners in the dungeon to manipulate Vanessa into helping them overthrow Sybil.

With their coup successful, Cora’s wolves execute Queen Sybil on the blood-soaked forest floor. Cora declares herself the new queen and demands that the survivors—Vanessa, Calix, Evie, Portia, and Lyra—swear allegiance. Devastated by Sin’s deep betrayal, Vanessa is torn. He professes his love, claiming that his actions were to protect her from a court that would have destroyed her. Calix, also reeling from the truth about his parentage and his cousin’s deception, shares a look of silent, mutual vengeance with Vanessa. In a final, desperate act of survival, Vanessa feigns forgiveness and loyalty. She takes Sin’s hand and swears her allegiance to Cora’s new regime, telling him that she loves him, too. Internally, however, she vows to make him regret his betrayal and to work with Calix to reclaim the castle and kill both Sin and his mother.
