Set at the fictional North Boston University (NBU), the novel follows Giana Jones, the football team's shy, bookish Public Relations Assistant Coordinator, and Clay Johnson, a star sophomore safety reeling from a devastating breakup. During a postgame press conference, Clay stands on a chair, holds up a handmade children's book titled Blind Side, and reads their story aloud to the cameras, publicly declaring his love for Giana. She pushes through the crowd, takes the book, and tells him she will rewrite their story only if they start completely over, calling his illustrations the ugliest thing she has ever seen. At her apartment, Clay tells Giana everything about Cory's deal.
