The Caged Bird is a captive animal whose wings are clipped and feet are tied. Unable to fly or walk freely, the bird lives in a restrictive environment described as a grave of dreams surrounded by bars of rage. Despite physical confinement and the trauma of the situation, the bird opens its throat to sing. It sings of things unknown but longed for, sending a fearful but powerful voice out over the distant hill.

The Free Bird experiences the vibrancy of life from a position of absolute privilege and power. It leaps on the back of the wind, floats downstream, and dips its wings in the orange sun rays. It moves wherever it wants, utilizing nature for its own sustenance, including eating fat worms on a bright lawn. It claims and names the open sky as its own territory. When the song of captivity echoes across the land, this bird chooses to think of another breeze rather than acknowledge the suffering nearby.
