Darcy and her friends discuss Phoenix magic before their Astrology class. The lesson, led by the overly emotional Professor Zenith, focuses on Mate Bonds. When Seth’s ex-girlfriend, Kylie, insults Tory, Darcy sets Kylie’s desk on fire, and Tory drenches Kylie with a wave of water. During the lesson, Darcy secretly sends suggestive texts to Orion.

Orion triggers a false Nymph alarm as a diversion to pull Darcy into a supply closet inside the observatory building as the class files back in. They have sex using a magical “Delicia Crystal” that enhances pleasure. Afterward, they reaffirm their commitment to each other despite the challenges they face.

Later, during Elemental Combat training, Darcy struggles against Seth. Orion advises her to be patient and study her opponent’s weaknesses rather than relying on pure force. Inspired, Darcy and Tory climb a boulder and publicly announce their intention to fight for the Solarian throne, a declaration met with cheers from their supporters, the A.S.S. (Almighty Sovereign Society), and challenging looks from the Heirs.

After class, their friend Diego reveals that a new memory has been added to his family’s collective network: It shows Lionel and Clara commanding a massive army of Nymphs, the sworn enemies of the Fae. The group is horrified by the revelation of this treasonous alliance. The sight of Clara aligned with Lionel makes Orion grim and distant, and that night, he doesn’t come to Darcy’s room, leaving her to worry alone.

Following their public declaration, an article is published announcing the Vega twins’ intention to claim the throne. Tory expects this political challenge to end her morning runs with Darius, but he’s waiting for her as usual. They have a brief, charged conversation, magically creating temporary crowns for themselves before their Star Crossed curse triggers a thunderstorm and forces them apart.

At breakfast, the student body has physically divided into two factions: those supporting the Vegas and those supporting the Heirs. Later, Tory prepares for a cheerleading competition in which her squad is pitted against one led by Marguerite. The winner of the cheer off will earn the right to perform at the upcoming Pitball match. In the locker room, Marguerite publicly taunts Tory, assuming it was Darius who rejected their Mate bond. Darius intervenes, stating that Tory rejected him, not the other way around.

In the cheer off, the routine performed by Tory’s squad, the Vixens, beats the more traditional performance by Marguerite’s team, Team Twinkle, and Tory experiences a rare moment of simple happiness with her teammates.

That night, the joy fades, and Tory is again tempted by shadow magic to escape the overwhelming emotional pain she feels over Darius. She forms an ice blade intending to cut herself to feed the shadows before something stops her. She crosses the room to her door and senses Darius’s magical presence on the other side. She puts her hand on the door, feeling his power, and they remain separated by the wood, neither speaking. When she finally works up the courage to open the door, Darius is gone. The experience leaves her feeling cold and lonely but provides her the strength to resist the shadows for another night.

Alone in his rooms, Orion struggles with the vision of his sister Clara allied with Lionel. He looks through a box of Clara’s old belongings and finds her diary, which he has never read. Gabriel arrives to check on him and reveals that the diary actually belongs to Orion’s father, Azriel. The diary is magically encrypted and requires a spoken password that they cannot guess.

Gabriel tells Orion he’s known about his secret relationship with Darcy for some time through his visions and offers his support. Relieved, Orion confides in Gabriel about using dark magic to rescue Clara from the Shadow Realm.

Darius messages Orion, revealing that Lionel has summoned them to Acrux Manor. Before they go, Orion and Darius meet outside campus and embrace, and their bond deepens as they prepare for the visit. At the manor, Lionel and a shadow-infused Clara greet them. Clara’s behavior is erratic; she acts affectionately toward Orion but unsettles him with her intimate behavior with Lionel. When Orion gives her an old charm bracelet from her things, she has a brief moment of recognition before returning to her unnerving Shadow Princess persona.

Lionel confirms he and Clara are in a sexual relationship, goading Orion until he attacks. Lionel easily subdues Orion with magic, chokes him, and warns him never to interfere again. During a party afterward, Lionel formally announces Clara’s return and introduces a new pro-Heir student society at Zodiac run by Mildred. Orion and Darius leave after a brief, tense conversation with Dante Oscura, a Storm Dragon ally who also suspects Lionel is plotting something.

After a night with Orion, Darcy wakes to find her horoscope predicting she will be asked to lead and will make the right choices. Orion comforts her and assures her he’s working on the situation with Clara before sneaking back to his own rooms. Once he’s gone, Gabriel arrives unexpectedly and tells Darcy he saw a vision that she needs his help with a present for Orion. He finds the Phoenix book on her desk, taps the page on imbued objects, and explains that the thing she wants to make requires a full pouch of stardust. The only person with enough stardust to spare is Darius.

Darcy rushes to find Darius before breakfast to ask for the stardust. He immediately agrees to help after she explains her plan. Grateful, Darcy tells him about the cookies Tory loves with her coffee. When he smiles, she realizes she’s starting to like Darius in spite of herself. 

In The Orb, Mildred announces the formation of the “Heirs Officially Ruling Everybody Society” (H.O.R.E.S.). In response, Geraldine leads the A.S.S. club in a rousing song and dance, creating a rival sign-up for students who support the Vegas. The student body is now formally split between the two factions.

Tory receives a message from Catalina, Darius’s mother, asking for help. Catalina reveals that Lionel has hired a man to magically “reassign” their son Xavier’s Order, trying to brainwash the emergent Pegasus into believing he is a Dragon. Catalina fears Lionel will eventually kill Xavier to hide the secret and begs Tory to use her Phoenix fire to “burn the lies out of his head” (362), just as she did for Catalina.

Tory agrees to help and gets stardust from Darius to travel to the manor. There, she uses her Phoenix fire on Xavier, successfully removing Lionel’s Dark Coercion that prevented him from speaking about his Order. However, she cannot find any other magic to remove. Realizing Lionel’s power over Xavier relies on the secret itself, Tory concocts a plan. She records a video on her Atlas as she uses her magic to push Xavier out of the tower window, forcing him to shift into his magnificent Pegasus form in mid-air.

With Xavier and Catalina’s permission, Tory immediately posts the video to FaeBook, revealing Xavier’s true Order to the world and thereby freeing him from Lionel’s control. Catalina, overjoyed, shifts into her Dragon form and flies with her son. As Tory returns to campus, she is ambushed by an angry Darius and the other Heirs. Darius is furious, fearing for Xavier’s safety, but Tory explains that public knowledge is Xavier’s only true protection. Darius realizes she is right.

Sensing he is bound by his father’s magic, Tory asks Darius to trust her. She uses her Phoenix fire to burn away every Dark Coercion spell Lionel has ever placed on him over the years, a process that leaves her completely drained. Darius is stunned and grateful. As the Star Crossed curse begins to react to their proximity, Caleb carries the exhausted Tory to Darius’s room to recover by the fire. Tory falls asleep in Darius’s bed as Darius and the Heirs discuss all the secrets he’s finally free to reveal.

Xavier reflects that although Lionel beat him privately for posting the Pegasus video online, his father is still forced to publicly celebrate his son’s Emergence to save face. Xavier is thrilled, knowing this means he will finally be allowed to leave the manor and attend Zodiac Academy in the fall. He worries about leaving his mother alone with Lionel.

While hiding from his father, Xavier receives a call from Sofia whom he has been secretly messaging under a pseudonym. He nervously reveals his true identity, and to his relief, she is not scared off by him being an Acrux. They have a brief, happy conversation before he is called away to meet the press.

For the photoshoot, Lionel forces a smile while posing with Xavier. Afterward, Xavier shifts into his Pegasus form for more photos, enjoying his father’s barely concealed fury. He feels a deep sense of freedom as the Heirs join him for pictures, treating him like one of their own.

After the press leaves, Darius shifts into his Dragon form, and they go flying together—something Xavier has always dreamed of. They join the other Heirs and Seth’s Wolf pack in the woods. There, they are ambushed by a manic Clara, dressed in what appears to be a wedding gown. She bites Xavier’s neck to feed and taunts the Heirs before fleeing when she hears Lionel roaring for her in the distance. The incident solidifies the Heirs’ resolve to find a way to stop both Clara and Lionel.

During their Arcane Arts class, Gabriel has the students pair up to interpret each other’s dreams. Darcy is partnered with Kylie, who remains hostile and interprets Darcy’s dream as proof that she’s "Probably a grade A bitch with a Werewolf fetish” (407). During the exercise, Darcy receives a series of flirtatious and sexually suggestive texts from Orion. Kylie misinterprets Darcy’s reaction, wrongly assuming the texts are from Seth and accusing Darcy of continuing to sleep with him. Darcy’s denials only enrage Kylie further. When Kylie insults Tory, Darcy slaps her.

As they arrive for Earth Elemental class, Seth and Caleb are showing off with acrobatics. They challenge Darcy and Tory to a competition. The Vegas successfully perform their own flips first, then Seth offers to throw Darcy himself, wagering a free, unshielded punch at him if she can complete three flips and land cleanly. Darcy accepts, motivated by her desire for revenge. She lands the flip perfectly. However, when she throws the punch, Seth puts up an air shield at the last moment as a joke, causing her to break her knuckles.

Furious and humiliated, Darcy refuses his subsequent offer for a genuine free shot. She declares that when she finally defeats him, it will be because she is stronger, not because he lets her win. Seth, far from being chastened, is excited by her fiery determination, telling her he loves a “worthy opponent.” The encounter leaves Darcy more determined than ever to make him pay for everything he has done.

Caleb, Max, and Seth plan their joint birthday party. Darius is quiet and brooding over his situation with Tory. After he leaves, the others discuss their progress on Orion’s plan to break the Star Crossed curse. Caleb reveals his part of the plan requires both Tory and Darius to be in a good mood, which seems unlikely. Seth’s ideas for grand romantic gestures have all been rejected by Darius, but Caleb thinks he knows something Tory and Darius both need.

Their plan involves inviting Tory and her friends to their party as a gesture of goodwill. Max reports he is slowly winning over Geraldine to enlist her help convincing Tory to attend. To ensure the night goes smoothly, they plot to magically lock Mildred in her room so she can’t foil their agenda. They find Tory, Darcy, and Geraldine in the library and invite them to the party. The girls are initially dismissive, but after Max personally appeals to Geraldine, and Caleb promises Tory a ceasefire for the night, they agree to come. Tory makes Caleb swear a magical vow, ensuring no “assholishness” will occur between their groups.

The plan is now set in motion: With Mildred out of the way, they hope to get Darius and Tory together in a relaxed setting where the high number of guests will suppress the effects of the Star Crossed curse, giving Caleb the chance to execute the next phase of his secret plan.

After an early run with his Wolf pack, Seth feels a growing sense of boredom with his Alpha status in his pack and craves a genuine challenge. He reflects on his ongoing rivalry with Darcy, admitting to himself that he secretly relishes her determination—and that her attacks have nearly shattered his shields on multiple occasions, though his bravado has kept her from knowing it.

To start his birthday off with a challenge, he texts Caleb, goading him into hunting Seth the way he used to hunt Tory. Caleb finds him hiding in a tree, and they engage in a rough, playful fight that ends with Caleb biting Seth’s neck to feed. The physical closeness is charged, and Seth reflects on his attraction to Caleb. As a birthday present, Caleb gives Seth a piece of moon rock and a lottery ticket for a trip to the moon—a lifelong dream of Seth’s. Seth is overwhelmed with gratitude, as Caleb reveals he has been buying thousands of lottery tickets for him for years hoping to win. The gift inspires Seth to resolve his issues with Darcy.

That evening at the party, Seth finds Darcy and leads her to a secluded balcony. He tries to apologize for his past actions, admitting he doesn’t want her to hate him. However, his apology is clumsy and half-hearted, and he quickly reverts to his old ways, warning her that her relationship with Orion will ruin her chances at the throne. His warning infuriates Darcy, who tells him to leave Orion out of their conflict before storming off, leaving their issues unresolved.

At Seth and Max’s birthday party, Darius and Tory share a charged, flirtatious conversation at the bar. On a dare, Darius drinks two magical cocktails designed to lower inhibitions. Later, Caleb approaches Tory and invites her to play a surprise game. Knowing their magical bargain will keep him from harming her, Tory lets him lead her to a hidden, magically-neutral amplifying chamber beneath the lake, a place designed to hide them from the stars. He explains his theory that with their magic suppressed and his own presence acting as a buffer, the curse’s effects can be bypassed. He asks her to trust him, then ties her wrists with magic-suppressing cuffs and blindfolds her. Darius appears, and Caleb’s theory proves correct—Tory and Darius can touch each other under these circumstances without the stars fighting against them. Caleb asks Tory if this is what she wants, and Tory agrees. She, Darius, and Caleb have a threesome without the Star Crossed curse activating. Afterward, Darius tells Tory he doesn’t care what the stars say, he will always be hers. As the curse begins to react to their proximity, Tory flees the chamber alone, heartbroken and conflicted.

Darcy nervously prepares for her first major Pitball game. Before the match, Darius visits the women’s locker room to give Tory a ribbon, asking her to cheer for him. Tory confides in Darcy and Geraldine that she misses the real Darius who challenges her and worries his new, gentler personality isn’t genuine. Following Darcy’s suggestion to provoke him, Tory leaves with a plan as Orion enters the locker room to give Darcy a pep talk. 

The game against Aurora begins, and their formidable captain, Rosalie Oscura, immediately impresses the team and infatuates Seth. In the first round, Rosalie breaks through Zodiac’s defenses and fires the ball through a hole she creates in Darcy’s shield. Darcy leaps up and catches the ball on the other side of the Pit before it can score, then passes to Geraldine, who slams it into the Pit just as time runs out. Zodiac wins the first round and Darcy feels a surge of confidence.
